When i see people sell these on ebay they somtimes mention that the serial number has been scratched off. I got my first 5 MVS games in today and only 2 had Serial numbers on them.

Whats the reasoning behind this? Not being able to trace to who originally bought it? and for what?

I think it has to do with selling outside of certain regions/countries, and to keep from knowing where they came from owners/sellers cut the serials off. Several of mine are that way too. Not that it matters much anyway, there's not much to the labels. LOL

Kind of silly, isn't it? I don't hear about SWAT teams busting down doors in search of import arcade boards and carts.

Yeah, this is why. Keep in mind, this was usually done when these were still current arcade releases. No one is going to track anyone down now, but at the time SNK frowned on operators selling used carts or exporting carts. Scratching off the seirals made it harder to tell who had it first.
