First time I've seen or heard of this one:

Is this some cheap hoax? Or just a failed unlicensced peripheral that doesn't work worth a damn?

They're fairly common. They had genesis versions, etc. Some worked with any rca input, vcr, tv, etc.
From what I understand they aren't that good.

Seems interesting in theory. But I bet in practice it just gives you eye strain.

I have one. They are not that great. The screens are of pretty shitty quality and you can't make out any text or anything. Mine isnt a SNES one, just a generic one. But for 12 bucks it was ok deal I guess.

I picked up one of these on ebay earlier this week, it should be getting here soon. I intend to use it on my MD and NES, and I'm going to try and rig it up to my laptop's video output and use the tracking to let me look around realistically in FPS games. Wish me luck. ;)
