I just got a PS2 recently and like to play some of the old PS1 games on it. (I never had either system before) But when I try to save a game onto the PS2 memory card in PS1 mode it doesn't recognize it. Do I need to use a PS1 memory card? I was looking at a PS1 memory card on ebay but it says for PS1 only. What does that mean? It only works with a PS1 or will work on a PS2 in PS1 mode? I don't want to bother buying something that doesn't work...

Thanks

You have to use a PS1 memory card when you are playing PS1 games PERIOD. ;)

Yeah. PS1 memory cards work in the PS2, but only with PS1 games. And PS1 games can be saved on a PS2, but only using a PS1 memory card.

However, I've been told that an entire PS1 memory card can be archived on a PS2 memory card--but that it only works as a backup, and that you have to copy the archive back onto a PS1 memory card to use the saves for a game.

Correct. You can't save PS2 saves on a PS1 memory card, or vice versa, but if you want to backup your PS1 saves you can copy them to a PS2 memory card. A couple cards can easily fit on a 8 MB PS2 card. 8-)

In fact, this is NEEDED for one game that I know off -- Suikoden III. If you want to carry over your party's stats and some bonuses for playing the game from Suikoden II, you need to copy the Suikoden II save to your PS2 memory card. Otherwise Suikoden 3 can't find it.

Question about the backup: you refer to it as an "Archive." Does it save the entire PS1 memory card as one file or does it work just like moving around PS2 saves.

I'm wondering because I have the "Xport" software/hardware and I'm wondering how easy it'll be to swap PS1 memory saves with buddies.

It works just like moving saves around in the Browser.

There's also a game that works in reverse: the Japanese PS2 versions of Dance Dance Revolution let you save custom steps as PS1 saves on the PS2 memory card, then you can copy them to a PS1 card after that. The point of all that is to use the edits in the arcade. I'm not sure why it can't just save to a PS1 memory card directly. There's probably some technical reason I don't know about.
