View Full Version : Ever create a false video game rumor?

Come on, at some point in your life, most likely when you were younger, I think almost all of us has said somehting false about a game. Maybe you found a level that never really existed, created a fake code, or something like that. I can remember lying about a match after beating Tyson in Tyson's Punch-Out, but I can't remember exactly what that match was.....damned brain.

Never have. Spent a good amount of time listening to Goldeneye rumors though :) Would've been very cool if they were true, even half of them.

One thing that I've found humorous looking back on those times is that nobody ever spread rumors about the obvious things (like people claimed they saw cans of Coca-Cola being produced during the time of New Coke, instead of cans of Classic Coke which is what the beverage was renamed to...always a conspiracy theory, and I doubt Coca Cola tried that one just so they could change the sweetener), like Xenia Onatopp being found somewhere on the Frigate (check the mission briefing, it hints that she might be) or the multiple James Bonds being still in the game (which they were pulled from). Instead it was always wierd stuff like Oddjob being in the Facility (I guess somebody figured the best character belonged in the best level) or finding a whole other world on the other side of that darn vent (which was rather obvious, but it might have dawned on me that you couldn't actually jump to the other side...now the fact that you could jump back up at all, as in the Aztec level, was hella cool).

Big mess of a paragraph there, but you get the point.

spreading but not creating...

pretty sure its not true but not 100%

the rumor used to be that if you beat pitfall or got toward the end monkeys were in the trees throwing coconuts at you.

seeing as how the adventure dot credits rumor turned out to be true we were ready to believe the pitfall one. wonder how the dot easter egg trick spread in the pre-net days?

Let's see.....
1. The Sheng long Rumor in Street fighter 2
2. A code to let you play as the 4 bosses in Street fighter 2 for the Snes
3. The Nudeality Rumor for MK2
4. The Ermac Rumor in MK1
5. Fatalities using Nina in Tekken 2

Cant think of anymore, but Im sure there are more. x_x

I still thought I did a good job with the "Namco Museum Volume 2 Greatest Hits Reissue" (http://www.thelogbook.com/z2002/apr/apr1.htm) cover a couple of April Fools' Days ago on my site. :D

Yes, I told a coworker (that I don't particularly like) the Link disc for Christmas was going to be bundled with an Emerald "Link Green" gamecube.
I didn't know he was going to tell customers that.. oops! LOL

Was there any truth at all to that MK1 Ermac rumor? Information is sparse.

I always fell very hard for the lies that others told me.

WHOA! You should hear this! And yes, it's my original creation. :-D

Splatterhouse 3:

If you go to the X-Stage at least twice and manage to kill the Mask in less than a minute, Biggy Man will arise from the ashes of the Mask and challenge you to a fight! He's really hard, and you get the worst ending if you lose where Biggy chainsaws Rick, Jennifer, and David to pieces and dumps their corpses in the Ordyne River. But winning gets you the best ending where Rick finds out that Pac-Man is his Father! Rick and his family then spends the rest of their life with Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Pac-Man Jr. Rick gets fat off of cherries, pretzels, and Galaxian ships, and everyone lives happily ever after.

The Ermac Rumor was false. It started because the words Ermac appeared on the screen which meant Error Machine or something like that. If Im wrong, someone correct me on this.

I used to go to school with a kid who was so full of BS ... we used to almost provoke him, just to hear what story he would come up with. Then we would write them down!

One day he told us that he had a perfect arcade port of Dragon's Lair for the Commodore 64 (not the actual release that came out). This "supposed" release came on 100 floppies, with each disk containing only one scene.

Also, in one of those "I used to have 1200 baud / oh yeah? I used to have 300 baud" moments, he told us his first modem was 1 baud.

No,...I've made honest mistakes....admitted.
I've got into

Now out of anger..
I did tell one Salesman at a EB who swore he knew it all..(,arrogant,buy this,no that sucks,Oh,why are you buying that,I'm right, your wrong, your stupid if you don't buy a Game Doctor from my store,Neo Geo & that system sucks,etc..)..kind of guy a lie about a game that had "not"been released for a certain system..
He went nuts trying to find the info out...asking every other employee in the store..
When they said "I don't know"I think he's right,being me..He was freaking out,,he turned all red..he couldn't stand being wrong..
I left in amusement to that fact that I know for that day he would be pulling his hair out of his head trying to prove to himself and his co-workers he was right.... :D

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but in Digital Press #53 there's a whole column (in "Wacky World of AL") about this. In there you'll find my humble contribution to the false rumor mill: Ladybug for Atari 2600. I did the PhotoShop work for the box and cartridge label, Dave G did the screen shotes... this occurred slightly before Atari lists were so easily accessible and digested. Some of today's well-known Atariphiles were stumped by that one.

Oh! My review of that is still online :)

This directions for finding the Adventure secret room were printed in one of those "How to Master Video Games"-type books back in the day. In an appendix IIRC.

Yes, the hadoken trick in Mega Man X was true, but it's a bitch to get. I remember using a password to get it. It's cool to check it out at least once.

And let's not forget that there was actually a Shoryuken in MMX2! In fact, I think there were rumors of a Tastumakisempukyaku in MMX3, but those were bogus.

I was in one of the pawn shops here. They had gotten in a colecovision setup. Had a few games. Worth about 20-30 bucks I would say. Nothing to special. They had the price tag for $149.99. I laughed, was pretty funny. Anyway I got talking to one of the sales men and he was convinced that on "E-BAY" they would get like $500 US for it. I played along with his little story. As it happend I had my DP guide withme that day. So i decided to pretend to check the prices of games. There was a Lady bug game for it, pretended to look it up. The put the "Oh my god" expression on my face. Told him that game was EXTREMELY rare and that I am going to the bank to grab some money so I can buy this collection of games. I just left and went home, but I stopped there a few days later to find that the Lady bug game had been seperated from the collection and had a intividual price tag on it of $99.99. I almost shit myself I laughed so hard. Oh well, fun and games.

Don't forget Cammy's "Cannon Drill" in MMX4.

I'll never forget how cool it was to see Dr. Light in the SF garb in MMX. Wasn't that also the first time Mega Man "spoke" in a game?

Haha, that's great man! I hate when e-bay warps the minds of some of the pawn dealers
