Didn't take long, did it?

I forget where my gf found it but it works and if you want to play and don't have in-game rich friends, here's how you can choose a server (sorta)

During character creation, keep going as normal until you hit the "Assign character to handle" screen. Hit "ESC" to back out. Now go to the delete character screen... and lo! Your character was assigned a server! Not the right one? Delete, go to create character and just hit enter until you get to the handle screen again. FFXI SAVES the options you chose for your character automatically. Takes 5 sec. each iteration until you find the server you want. Took me about 3 min. to hit Phoenix server this way, compared to the 5 min. it takes to get through the starting intro to see what server you're on the long way.

Hope this helps people.

How is the game itself? I'm a huge FF nut but don't know if I have the time to justify spending $10 a month on it.

Well, let me put it this way: Out of the 6 MMOs i've tried, this one has the best chance of keeping me as a player longer than a week. It's all about the job class system. That, and you actually have choices during battle. It's not all auto attack and wait till enemy dies.

There's job class attacks, weapon skill attacks, magic (of course) all of which can be chosen in battle while fighting, it simply makes your next attack whatever you choose. It adds strategy to what's been a lackluster battle system in nearly every other MMORPG.

Oh, and the tactics-style job class system is excellent. Don't like being a Red Mage? Don't delete, just become a thief and see if you get enough levels in both to unlock the summoner class (probably not the right formula, but you see what I mean).
