View Full Version : "Amply Reviewed": win a boxed Sega Nomad! T-MINUS
digitalpress

It's go time.
This contest has the easiest and most flexible rules of any contest we've ever run. All you have to do is write a game review that's better than everyone else's. A penel of judges selected by me will rate your review, with a portion of your score coming from the forum community in general.
The review can be of any game, and can be of any length.
The GRAND PRIZE is a damned spiffy Sega Nomad in its original box, with a selection of games deemed "review worthy" by the DP staff. SECOND PLACE gets a brand new Space Invaders Collection Pack (2003) (http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/spaceinvaderscoleco.htm) for ColecoVision. THIRD PLACE gets a Sniderman Productions' "Thriftin'" card game. First, second and third place also get a DP T-Shirt (http://www.digitpress.com/shirts.htm) and psychOpedia (http://www.digitpress.com/psychopedia.htm) as well.
EVERYONE who enters and gets a "thumbs up" review (you don't have to win, place or show) gets a 6-issue subscription to Digital Press (http://www.digitpress.com/join_us.htm). That's just our "thank you" for playing and taking the time to enlighten the gaming community :)
The deadline will be two weeks from today. Sunday, November 16th at noon EST. Any reviews submitted after that date will not qualify for judging.
If you need some tips, check out the tips at our main review page (http://www.digitpress.com/reviews) (and be sure to read Wavelflack's column if you haven't already seen it here)
If you have any questions... post 'em here!

Is there a length requirement, or a game that we can't review?

what exactly is your definition of "thumbs up", does it mean the jury thinks the review is not bullshit?? or what? i'm asking this because i don't think i'd be able to make one of the top3 spots due to my lack of writing skills (especially in english), but making a good review should be possible ;)

How many reviews can one person enter? Just one? Or multiples? :)

A "thumbs up" is a review that the judges agree is of good quality, regardless of its actual rank among all of those submitted.
Don't be too concerned about your writing skills. Write from the heart, and with your head.

You can submit multiple reviews but for the purposes of the contest, you can only WIN with one of them. You can't win first and third prizes, for example. If that's the way the voting goes, your best review is kept.

Yes indeed.
Once received, I'll be turning your reviews into "DP style" pages, so don't concern yourself with the formatting. In fact, sending the review along in straight TXT file with JPG, GIF or BMP pictures would be just perfect.

I don't know where to start. Do you have any examples from previous review contests that you could dig up?
I'm definitely trying this one out!

This is the first time we've dont a "quality review" contest. Last year we did a "most humorous review" contest. The winner was Scott "ClubNinja" Bertulli with his Atari 2600 Journey review (see the reviews page if you're interested). Just do the best you can! Set a new standard for future contests :)

What happened to "most informative review"?
was it decided informative wasn't as quality as "quality"?

So, can I combine this with the 'Write a 50,000 word Novel' gig mentioned in that other thread?
I'd at least win the title of longest, most boring review!

You ever get an epiphany? Just sitting around wondering what you're going to do and then it just hits you and you know? This happened to me last night, had to start up a third straight game in the title I'm going to review. Oh, it should be good.
...at least enough for a free 6 month sub :D

When giving an actual numerical review score, should we use a 10 point, or 5 point scale? I'm curious what the favored scale is.

Yes, that name in bold would be me. In case some of you are wondering if I can be bribed, here is a list of items I'm currently in need of:
-a plastic, yellow rubber ducky for my 2:00 bath times
-vintage 1985 frozen, microwavable dinners (the ones with turkey and brownies preferred)
-any photos of killer whales operating snowcone machines
-a dvd consisting of all episodes of My Little Pony
-a spent nuclear fuel assembly from a Soviet era attack submarine
-a styrofoam Big Mac container signed by Ronald McDonald, Grimace, the Hamburglar, Birdie the Early Bird, the Rockin' Hotcakes, and Bernice (you DO remember Bernice don't you?)
-the bloody skull of the actor who played Jar-Jar (silver platter not required)
-any tissue paper that graced the perineum of Salma Hayek, Reese Witherspoon, or Halle Berry
-a map to the Keebler elves' secret cookie factory
-two tickets to Tahiti
If you have any of these items, please contact me, and I may be able to push your review to the finals.... maybe.

You certainly can, provided you're in turn OK with the fact that it will be reformatted into a DP-style page.
For you see, all of the entries will be ANONYMOUS to all of the judges except me. Your own forum pals won't know it's you unless you've specifically stated something personal in nature within the review. I hope to eliminate ALL bias in this way, so the judges can focus on the reviews themselves, not who wrote them.

As someone who was raised by and has come to appreciate graphic storytelling as a powerful medium, would it be okay with you if I formatted my review, in terms of where screenshots go? I typically compress each one to about 3kb or so. I have an insane plan, but it involves reviewing AROUND the shots. I'll just do a very simple paragraph - shot - paragraph format that you can easily plug into your design scheme.
Which raises another question. Does your review format allow for more than one page?
Final question, again having to do with formatting. Do you have a specific maximum width? For instance, I limit my screenshot width to 512 pixels or so, with nothing bordering it on either side. That would fit quite comfortably, I think, with your frame, on any resolution.

Knock yourself out. Keep the screenshots as close to 320 x 240 as proportionally possible.

They've always been on one page but if you need multiple pages for "effect" that's OK too.

OH... you NEED big screen shots, eh?
512 is OK. I'm sure I can work it all in just fine.

I've gotten quite a few entries in the last 2 days, I don't have an exact count at the moment but I'd say I have in the neighborhood of 30 "players" and 40 reviews. I'm going to be VERY busy Saturday morning compiling all of this and getting something ready for voting before the weekend's up!

As I said earlier, I used up my best material years ago, but this one isn't so bad either. At least, it's better than some of the abysmal efforts I put forward for that "humorous reviews" bit last year (for which I am very sorry).
