Rather off-topic but...you're looking for the TG version? So it was released in the US as well? I've got the Super CD-ROM (not ^2) version.

Could you post a picture? To my knowledge all versions of Ys 1/2 are TGCDs, none of them are TG SCDs. The only Ys game that was an SCD is Ys IV.

Oh hell, here, proof it's not an SCD (no SCD logo):

And here's a game with the SCD logo on it:

And just for completeness, here's the Japanese version, also not an SCD:

Oh, so then there's PC-Engine (I don't go for using TG when I'm talking about the Japanese versions, there's enough confusion already!) CDs, PC-Engine Super CD-ROM^2s, and...PC-Engine Super CD-ROMs? That last one, I could be wrong if that actually exists or not.

Can't see your pics, forbidden (!) for this PC at least.

Yes, I'll scan mine to my site as soon as I get home in less'n an hour.

There are no SCD versions of Ys 1/2 for either the PC Engine or the TGCD.

I see CD-ROM^2 on mine.

I don't think there were "Super CD-ROM" (without ^2) releases, actually. There was CD-ROM^2 and Super CD-ROM^2 (such as Dracula X and Snatcher), but that's it as far as I can tell.

Nearly every TGCD is a CD-ROM^2. That just means that you would use system card 2.0 (the one that came with the unit) to play it on a TGCD. IIRC, the only game that requires the 1.0 card is Altered Beast. On a Duo the 2.0 card is built right in.

Yeah, the 1.0 card was PC Engine only. The 2.0 card came out before the TGCD shipped outside Japan and is backwards compatible, as is the 3.0 card. This means you can use either a 3.0 or a 2.0 to play any CD-ROM(1) games except Altered Beast which for some reason expects specifically the 1.0 card.

Or at least I've never heard of another game that specifically needs the 1.0 card.

Actually, it's the 3.0 card that is built into the Turbo Duo's, not the 2.0 cards. As for Altered Beast requiring a 1.0 card, I'm willing to bet that was a screw-up and not something intentional.

Yeah, good catch, it is the 3.0 in a Duo. I mistyped. I'm willing to bet that Altered Beast does some kind of OS check to make sure the system card is present, and in the process checks something that they didn't put on the 2.0 or 3.0 cards. It was written before the 2.0 and 3.0 existed so there's no way they could have anticipated having to worry about that.
