Mods, please move this if you wish -- I'm not really sure of the right place to post it.

Having just picked up a NES Top Loader, I cleaned it up when I got it home and also cleaned inside the contact slot with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. Tested it on the games I got at the same time, they work just fine.

Today I went out to my local GameStop (used to be a Funcoland) to pick up a NES adapater and a couple of cheap games. One of the games was Crystalis. Took them home, cleaned their contacts with the same method as described above, and then tried them in the top loader.

Well, for some strange reason, Crystalis does'nt work. All the other games start right up, but this one just keeps a white screen (the same you get if the deck is on and no game inside.) I made sure the cart was pushed ALL the way in, and tried several times. Nothing.

I thought maybe the screwdriver kit I got from Sylentwulf would open up the case so I could check the insides but no go on that.

Are there some games that just don't work on the top loading NES model? I thought Funco tested all the games they got in trade before selling them? Now I have to go BACK? I still have the receiet -- will they return my money? I've hardly ever bought anything from them before. Is there anything else I can try?

I'd check and see if the cart works on a standard toaster deck. If it doesn't, the cart is likely dead and you should return it.

Its kinda of hard to test when most of the stores don't even have a working nes, but not to worry, they'll take it back. You have a week to return a used game for any reason you want. Can't help you with the other problem though, sorry.

I don't have another NES to test it on. :o

A full week? Good, I don't think I could get back there for a few days. Oh well, that's good to know.

I cant remember if I had this problem with my toploader or not, but I know with the toaster if you dont wipe all the alcohol off it may leave a residue that interferes with the game coming on. Just use a dry qtip and wipe it off real good and try that. Also, what do the connectors on the cart look like? Are they clean, gold or corroded?

Open the cart and use and eraser to clean the contacts. Sometimes the alchohol doesn't get all the dirt. Don't be afraid to rub hard. The eraser will leave your contacts looking like brand new.

Like I said, I tried to open the cart. I guess I don't have the right bits after all. :o

Make sure it is a white eraser though!

Do those nintendo screwdrives that are sold on ebay open the carts? (I know pretty dumb question)
If they do, then im gonna get me one.

Cleaning the cart doesn't seem to matter. This is an odd thing. ALL my games work on my top loader except for CLASH AT DEMONHEAD. I get a white screen. HOWEVER (!!!!), keep trying (reinserting) the cartridge...eventually it'll work!

No idea why. Game works fine in the toaster, and the cart's beautiful. But 70% of the time I plug it in and power it up, WHITE SCREEN.

It needs to be the 3.5mm security bit.

I've never had any problem playing any NES games on my toploader, unless the cart was dead (which only happened once with an Uncharted Waters cart I have). I have both Crystalis and Clash at Demonhead, and they both work fine on the toploader, so I would guess that the Crystalis cart is dead.

Bad pins on the toploader deck? I don't know how many pins Crystalis uses, though, and this is mostly a problem with original NES decks, not the toploader. Still could it be possible?

I though Crystalis started with a white splash screen and after a couple seconds said "snk." How long did you leave it on?

not all nes games use the security bit, a few older ones use just a small flat head...you could try that.
