Im new here... im the foremost authority on all things video games in my area, but when I see some of the game rooms on this site, I feel like a poser. Dont get me wrong, my room is completely video games, but my collection is lacking due to a minimal amount of funding. I only have 17 systems (including handhelds), and only about 250 games. I have beaten over 600 games however! Am i the only person on this site that is like this, or are all of you guys rich( or at least have jobs), and can spend a lot on your collections. I dont like the idea of me being a poser among the hardcore just because my dad wont let me work.

Welcome to the Retrogaming Roundtable, Gamecubefreek!

Sounds like you value playing time over collecting, and I can certainly sympathize with that. So no, you're not the only person here who isn't in the "elite" category. :D But hey, if you're hardcore about playing, I predict you'll fit in just fine! It really boils down to, whether collecting or playing, whether or not you enjoy it.

And enjoy not having to work just yet - I miss those days. :) If you haven't already, learn about us and tell us more about yourself in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11).

I vote that you are a Poser. :D

But that's just because you haven't become completely addicted yet.

When you walk through a flea market or swap meet or pawn shop and buy everything that is a good deal, then you're on your way.

When you'll spend as much as it takes to get the last couple of games for a system, Congratulations YOU"RE NO LONGER A POSER. Even if this means sneaking out of the house at 2:00 AM to work, stocking shelves at Wal-Mart to pay for these games.LOL

Are you kidding? That's a great start! What matters most is that you like games and can talk games, and that is what this site is about. It's not how much you have, what you have, but our love for games in general that brought this site together.

Now, on the other hand, if you wear the Hot Topic gaming shirts and have never touched a controller in your life, then you might be a poser

Nah, you're not a poser. Besides, most collections are built little by little, so don't feel bad if you don't have the ultimate room of doom just yet. Of course, what do I know? I consider myself to be a gamer, not a collector. Achika's right: if you're passionate about videogames, you're definitely not a poser, regardless of whether you're a gamer or a collector, or both.

And I agree with PDF: Enjoy the work-free life while it lasts.

I voted poser mostly because of the fact that you had a poll. When you're hardcore you know it.

Welcome :)

Defintely not a bad start. I've been gaing since i was a kid and I've NEVER beat 600 games...and I'm 26. Although...maybe you need some exercise? :D

Anyway, welcome! Don't feel bad about the collections...it comes with time...I've been collecting since 95 and I have about 600...and I feel inferior around here a LOT! :D

Well, when I started here I had a Dreamcast and XBox. Now I have 19 systems and a Neo arcade setup. I think you're doing well.

And be sure to check out our buy/sell forum, every now and again you can hook up a trade with someone and get both parties happy.

I'm not going to vote. I think you're putting too much thought into all of this.

Sounds to me like we have similar sized collections, and I certainly don't consider myself a poser. Like Achika said, it's all about your love of games, not how much you have. Not everyone can afford to have a fully stocked room of doom, after all.

So just stop worrying, and enjoy! :)

You think you're a poser? I have 3 systems and 26 games. A recovering collectaholic. But I've been here since EZBoard Days so the people still put up with me. ^^;

If you're a poser I wouldnt know what to call my 7 systems and 60 odd games. It's not the numbers, it's the dedication, baby 8-)

Welcome to the forums!

You're only a poser if you don't properly introduce yourself in this thread:

It's true. Everyone who ignores that thread is eventually run out of here like a common pygmy. So hop to!

And game ON.

Welcome :)

Ditto that

Seriously, 250 games isn't bad. That's about all I have.
I am currently striving for 54 more games, and then I will have every game that I want. I don't think it makes me a poser from having a small collection of 300 games. I think it makes me a dedicated gamer who knows what he likes and can afford :)

Just by asking that question, the answer becomes yes. :P

Seriously tho, welcome. Don't worry about "hardcore" "poser" etc,. The question is, are you having fun. Like Achika said, it's not about what you have. It's NEVER about what you have. You can't buy hardcore, you either have the love or you don't.

Hey, you make me look like a poser in comparison. I only have about ten VG systems, including all portables. So I voted "no," because I look like crap compared to what you have. Welcome to the fold, GCF. :D

I'm not a collector. I just like to be a gamer. So that's why I post at this forum. So if not having tons of systems and games makes you a poser. I'm a poser. :D But of course I am at the bottom of the hardcore list unfortunately :(

OK, thanks for the input everyone...Im glad to know that there are others in my situation. Id like to clear one thing up, however (if anyone cares). I am completely addicted to adding to my collection, in fact i spend basically every last cent that i have on games and collectibles. Ahh, whatever...thanks for making me feel welcome!

I coulda swore it said "Your vote has been lost. Click here to return."

Anyhow, I voted NO, and I must say that was a particularly strong and resounding NO. I wouldn't go so far as to call myself the foremost authority on games in my area--I live in Battle Creek, after all--but maybe I'd say I know more about import stuff than the average bear.

As for buying games being too much of a drain on the pocket? Oh yes, especially many of the games that get me excited (Neo Geo, MSX2, Japanese Master System, Famicom...you get the idea). I could always go handheld or Genesis crazy (with a sudden realization that my collection really needs Earthworm Jim after seeing a screenshot...boy am I out of the loop) but that would ultimately keep me further from the items that I want to get in the near future!

No rest for the wicked, I say.

I'd say it depends: what are you trying to pose as? Collector? Player? Do you see yourself as a poser? Did your parents beat you or sexually assault you as a child?

Welcome to the group. Now tell me about your mother. :D ;)

Welcome to the boards! :)

Sorry, but i also had to vote yes because you asked the question.

I have about 250 games, maybe more, but i dont consider myself a poser since i dont have a job either, and am doing the best i can. (i.e. going to flea markets, attending CGE, trading and buying stuff on here)

Don't worry, you're not alone. I'm in the same boat as you. I've got 18 systems, and I have 323 games. No doubt, those numbers would be much greater if I had more money, or less bills & utilities to address. I take a look at the rooms of doom, and my ego gets squashed every time. My room is full of gaming and anime paraphanelia, but I can't touch the pros, and I'm ok with that. If I didn't have a GF and the burdens of employment and a social life to fulfill, I MIGHT scour flea markets, trades, etc, for more goodies, but I have other things that take up my time.

Does that make me any less "hardcore" than someone who has 1500+ games? I don't think it does. I love anything and everything video games. I spend as much time as I can (which isn't much these days unfortunately) playing games, talking with my friends about games, reading up about games, and basking in their magnificence. My friends often refer to me as "a walking video gamy encyclopedia" because of my love of games.

It's a state of mind IMO. What good is having a thousand games if you know hardly anything about gaming?

As long as you have a love of gaming, you are not a poser, pure and simple. Not everyone has enough money to be able to buy every game, console, and accessory they want. Who's to say they are still not a collector or a gamer?

Youre only as hardcore as the number of posts you have, j/k!

Lol. If you love gaming...collecting, playing, whatever, you are welcome here. If collection size is a measure of how hardcore you are, there are many posers in the forum.....but I don't believe that's the case. You don't have to have an enormous collection to be l337. In fact, if you look at how many menbers there are, you are in the top 10 percent for quantity, I'm sure (yeah, I know, there's a lot of 0 and 1 posters out there).

You're fine dude. Personally I don't even know how many consoles I have nor how many games.. not because I have so many (although I guess I do), but mainly because I don't care and have never COUNTED! As long as you dig games I'll vote 'hardcore' (although I hate that term as well) x_x ;)

Ed Oscuro

As another thought, I personally have no problem with quality over quantity. I have abolutely no jealousy towards collections composed of tons of common items, and while even those collections have many games I'd like to get, again the wonders of going on a hunt is what keeps me from feeling jealousy :)

That perhaps is what separates the casual from hardcore, but does it weed out the posers? I can't say. I myself feel that I've sometimes (in the past) collected stuff just because I liked showing off online, which is truly not a good sign. Since then, though, I've settled into actually enjoying these old titles so I can definitely say I collect stuff I'd like to play :)

There's also nothing wrong with collecting "odd stuff" if that really does light a fire underneath you--essentially, the test for a "poser" would be:

"If the collector does not feel an affinity for the games he's buying but attempts to persuade himself/others that he's really into it, he's a poser." Thus a grandma who's got a couple Atari VCS prototypes kicking around that her late husband programmed and sees them as a potential source of some extra retirement money is not a poser since she doesn't attempt to convince herself or others that she's really into the thing.

I can't really imagine that many game posers are online. Even people who've come and gone from game dedicated forums and exhibited astonishingly bad behavior tend to come not for the community so much as their love of the games.
