View Full Version : Strangest computer related thing I saw at a Goodwill Store

I know companies sometimes dump their ancient stock of software to get a tax break but this is just out there. Sunday my wife and I stop in at the local Goodwill to get some clothes for my ma as the second hand stores in Missouri are as good (to put it nicely). Anyhoo by the women's clothes is a table of various comic books, posters and huge (like 3 foot) cylindrical stacks of shrinkwrapped CD-ROMs. For $3 I could have gotten maybe 500 copies of Return to Zork or some game that had "Sword" in the title only it was "disc 2". And the stacks were truely just that title. Obviously this must've been some sort of OEM dump but still freaky to see.
No, I didn't buy a stack. What would I do with 'em? Don't use coasters and the cats can't fetch. Might be an interesting additive to Christmas cards-give the gift of adventure...heheheheh.

Hmm, you should have bought one. That Christmas card idea is cool! :)

You could pull a "Trading Space" and screw them shiney side out to the wall of your Room of Doom.
Friends of mine used to face the label sides towards each other and made a mobile with the shiney sides out, it was pretty nice.

put 'em in the microwave for 3 seconds, watch them spark and make a cool design...i've only done it with cdrs but i'm sure it works otherwise.

Nonsense! AOL discs have LOTS of other purposes:
Coasters (Drink or Funature)
Cristmas decorations (glue the label sides together)
Clocks
Bookmarks
Frisbees
Bike reflectors
Mobiles
Wallpaper
Lamp light reflectors
etc.
:D LOL

<--- Mr. Wizard.
Actually, you should put a glass of water in the microwave with them or you do damage to the microwave's "guts." There isn't enough of a reaction to absorb all the microwaves otherwise.
You can also take those kitchen ceiling flourescent bulbs (the halo types) and put them in the microwave and they'll light up just as if they were in the socket.
D
BTW, I accept no responsibility for any damages resulting from following the above advice.

This gives me an idea. If anyone is TRUELY interested in a copy (or two or a dozen) of Return to Zork, post here! I'd send 'em to all who are interested for the cost of shipping & packaging (and I'd try to get as cheap as possible). The discs come with no instructions-it's just a wrapper "tube" of RtZ discs. I'm assuming they work. If there's enough interest AND the stacks are still there I'll pick 'em up and send 'em out.
Let me know, gang.
