Sorry, only way to do this is with a mod chip. You can get a USB plug, a memory card device and a dvd called region X that will let you play Region free DVD movies.

fyi Lan-kwei still sells mod chips they just took them off their web page. You can still buy a X0-2.

This requires some simple surgery...

The tools you will need are:
- screwdriver
- tweezers
- YF-23 converter/decoder plug with the double 'whisker' configuration (sold in online stores for $9.99)
- Regional map display card for PS2(sold in online stores for $11.99)

On the back of the PS2, you must remove the access panel. This will inturn allow you to manipulate the inner circuits of the machine. Once inside, locate the chipboard to the left. It's easily distinguished by the black 'warehouse chips' staggering the left side of the board. The largest chip has elevated, assymetrical paths converging to its top right quadrant (or the northeast side). The path furthest to your left is responsible for the delivery of regional encoding to the warehouse which is transferred to the PS2's main central processor. As you know, this is Sony's defense measure against piracy.

Now the fun begins...

(1) Locate the elevated path furthest to your left that connects to the northeast quadrant of the large 'warehouse chip'.

(2) CAREFULLY snip the connection at the base of its junction with the chip. Be extremely cautious as to not disturb the paths next to it.

(3) Make sure your YF-23 plug heads are connected to the video and audio inputs of a VCR or DVD player that's hooked up to your television set. The a/v heads of the YF-23 are respectively colored to the corresponding rims of the VCR's output and input nozzles.

(4) Take the 'whisker' end of the YF-23 and make sure to place the grey whisker hook on the path you have already snipped.

(5) Now place the orange whisker hook on the elevated outbound path that's on the southwest quadrant of the warehouse chip.

(6) Make sure no CD's or DVD's are in the machine.

(7) Turn on the PS2 (along with your television) and you should see the screen proceed to turn white. This is normal.

(8 ) Insert your regional disply map card into memory card slot #2. The PS2 will begin to process the settings and a regional map will appear onscreen.

How the Map Reads: the USA (blue), Europe (yellow), Australia (tan), Japan (pink), and Brazil (green) are colored on the map with 7 digit codes next to each of them.

(9) Using your D-pad, highlight the United States and press 'X'. The country will begin flashing. Press 'X' again to confirm. Next to the USA, the 7 digit code will blink.

(10) Using the directional buttons, alter each digit in the USA code to match that of Japan's code.

(11) When finished, press start. The United States will turn pink on the map like Japan.

(12) Remove the YF-23 plug from the a/v nozzles and the PS2, then plug up your PS2 as normal.

There's no need in worrying about the snipped path. The data has been placed in the warehouse chip and will be automatically initiated everytime the machine is powered on. Put in your Japanese imports and play till your heart is content.

Game on, my friend! :D

This big ole, fat, intricate lie was brought to you by... me. In no way does this technique exist. In fact, I thought it all up while scarfing down a bacon and egg biscuit. Just wait for the American release or buy a Japanese PS2. Any destruction to your PS2 as a result of this phony and exaggerated hacking tip is clearly your own fault. Have a nice day.
