Just read te how-to guide on modding a Saturn to play backups. Unfortunately, I have a model 2, 21 pin system. Is there any way I can make the mod chip work with this system? I don't want to do the swap trick and burn out my Saturn's motor. I have a 4-1 Action Replay Plus 4MB cart...will that let me play backups? Any help you guys offer is greatly appreciated.

a system 2 21 pin ribbon works if you have the 32 pin IC chip on the cd-rom board.

All I can say is you might be able to find someone to swap out Saturns. If you don't meet the criteria outlined in my How to at http://www.nullunit.com/dpforum/viewtopic.php?t=2255 your SOL for playing backups on your Saturn.

Yo, Tetsu! First of all, your avatar rocks!
Second, I reccomend the following site:
http://www.gamesx.com/importmod/saturncon.htm
Gamesx is a video game technical website. Using this guide, I was able to mod my saturn without a chip, and it works perfectly (I just put a slider switch in the top of the case). If you decide to use this method, go ahead and PM me or reply here if you need any help. I just did it a couple months ago, so it's all still pretty fresh in my mind.

He has a 4 in 1 which defeats the country code which is what that modification does. He is looking for a way to play CD-R backups. Cool inexpensive no-regions Modification though.

Ahhhh......thanks Raedon. Now I'm going to go pound my damn head into the wall for not reading the whole post.

Hmm...the Saturn region switch looks similar to the Genesis one. Anyone know if this is possible for the Dreamcast?
If it is, no one's figured it out yet. Mod chip or boot disc are the ways to go for DC imports.

Yeah, the boot disc is kind of a drag when you switch games a lot or are playing VGA. Ahh well.

Thanks for the help, WiseSalesman. (and I love my new avatar too!) I am familiar with Gamesx (awesome site) and performed this mod a couple of years ago. the difficulty is in defeating the bios chip, which checks to see that a game isn't a cdr.

I should fle this one under the subject "Now what?" as my Saturn has 64 pin chip and the mainboard doesn't match any pictured on Gamesx site.
I don't have any import so it's probably moot point but still I'd like to see if I can hack my Saturn in case I run across a few Japanese games.

You only need a $10 cart to play imports on a Saturn. a 4 in 1 or 5 in 1 or some of the import carts.
