For those that have played Outrun, Afterburner II , or Space Harrier on both the SEGA's and NEC's machines, how did the games compare? Were they pretty even or did one machine provide a more true to arcade experience?

Ooh... good question. I'd say Outrun. Last time I was at Hershey Park, they had an Outrun cabinet at the big arcade (which also had Shinobi, 1942, Golden Axe, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and I couldn't refuse a game. Unfortunately, I was on a field trip and I only had about fifteen minutes to get back to the main entrance before the bus left. I wanted to check out the rest of the arcade, so I left in the middle of playing Outrun... but man, I love that game. So I dashed back to Outrun and I just kept driving with only about twenty more seconds left. I really need to go back to Hershey someday...

F- for effort.
He was asking what was better, the NEC (TurboGrafx, etc.) or the Sega (Genesis, Master System) versions of Outrun, Space Harrier and Afterburner II. Every time you post an answer without reading the accompanying question, god kills a midget.
And I have no idea as I haven't spent any time with a Turbo outside of emulation, unfortunately.

Space Harrier is the only one I've played, and it's not bad. I've not played any of the other Hucard Sega games, but I have (unfortunately) played Golden Axe on the Turbo Duo, and it's a turd.
I touched Altered Beast briefly, but can't recall much about it.

Oh we all know how much you love him already! Be a little more circumspect about professing your love..!
As for my two cents:
The PC-Engine remake of Shinobi (handled by that little pinkish dragon Azmik) is essentially "spot on" in terms of graphics, but the bonus stage is gone. So is the clever Andy Warhol reference (to be fair, the Sega Master System version didn't have this either, and I rather doubt the NES version did.)
Space Harrier on the PC-Engine is superior to the Sega Master System version in every way except for the sound sample "Get ready!" which is essentially unrecognizable to all but the most hardcore Space Harrier fans (or people who've compared both games side by side).

Thanks for the info, guys. I think I'll just pick up the various games that I want for both the MD and PCE (which seems to have had good ports of the SEGA titles).
I do own the PCE version of Outrun and was quite surprised at the smooth scaling effects. I hope Afterburner II and Space Harrier are pretty close to the same quality :)
