When you are on ebay sometimes and you bid on a game and just like 5 mins before the auction ends you get outbidded, doesn't that suck? What I am asking is if anybody has gotten into a full fledged bidding war over stuff like that and paid a little too much for that item you thought you were going to get uber cheap, or if you felt a little powerful when someone outbidded you and slammed then back into the ground saying "dont mess with the king!"(yeah it sounds a little lame but I do it all the time)

When I was first starting with ebay I would get into bidding wars. It was a typical noob thing to do. I once paid something like $80 for a complete copy of Beat 'em and Eat em. Luckily, the seller never came though and my money was refunded.

Real auctions are worse. I go to 4 or 5 tropical fish auctions a year as I'm an avid aquarium nut. I've seen fish go for 10 times what they should have simply because both bidders disliked each other and got caught up in competition. When you see a nice Angelfish go for $300 (normally $20 tops) you can tell both bidders are really caught up in it.

Heh, most recently there's the story of that Sharp x68000 (which still hasn't shown up on my doorstep, bugger, and I need to pay for it still, extra bummer!) that started out around $180 but was boosted --twice at the exact moment as I watched (doubled in price ._.) and then a final time right as the auction ended (though for some reason the computer I was using didn't show the final price even after it was over, causing problems for a day or so between me and my contact over my not subtle hint that he was inflating the price).

Yeah, being bid up sucks. I just barely managed to get that machine, but I'm very glad I did.

Sometimes your opponent bids high for the sole purpose of getting you to spend more money.

i know the two bidders of Bonk 3 cds for Turbo Duo, one of them just wanted to stop the other from getting the game, needless to say $600 for bonk 3 is crazy and whats more crazy are the other 2 copies he bid on and won just to stop the person he didnt like getting the game..

I got into a nasty one at CGE2K2 over a SUper Nintendo display unit. I wanted it pretty bad but I think I dropped out at like $225 (?) and lost. me and the guyw ere just going back and forth. I was bidding on a Chase the Chuckwagon w/ box though on ebay, and lost with liek 10 secs left. I was mad.

I know it's a dickhead thing to do, but I pimp (bump up) other bids sometimes.... I wind up taking things from time to time that I didn't necessarily want, or think I'd get.

Geelw used to be the king of putting in a cheeky bid, and taking home some of my best games for mere sheckles. I guess I'd rather it be him than anyone.

Sure, when I first started bidding on Ebay items..This would happen to me a lot..
I'd get into some real high bidding wars..
Two of the biggest Bidding wars I was in was for a Adventurevision & another for a Computer Space Machine that went for a few Grand.
I did get in a bidders war for "my" Neo cab right near the end of the auction..I was pissed and fought to the end..
I can't say I've learned my lesson..I still do the same thing..
But not as much.

On a related note, doesnt ebay have a sniping service? I always get outbid with 5 seconds left and it pisses me off.

My nemesis is Megalon23...actually we're good friends, but we always bid on the same thing...drives me nuts...everytime I think I find something I want that I think I can get for a deal I see megalon's name pop up...sometimes we just agree on one of us to bow out to keep the other from paying too much and maintaining a friendship...I must say though, that I have given up on auctions far more often than he :o
