I only wanted to emulate because I wanted Star Wars (RED FIVE STANDING BY!!!!) However, it's impossible to play using the keys. Plus, for some reason the controls menu keeps popping up during play, maybe my tab key is sensitive or something. Anyway, I guess I need a joystick to get my Star Wars fix, anyone have any opinions on which to get? Thanks in advance!

i like the playstation-> usb adaptors. i think mine is the super dual box or super joy boy or something...get one off ebay for less than $10. i wouldn't recommend it for force feedback or analogue tho (unless it is just me not getting it work work correctly), but if you're posting in the emulation forum you probably don't care about those features. the controls are very responsive, and of course the Dpad is about the best you can get imo....who doesn't like the psx controller?

The Gravis Gamepad pro is pretty good. Or the Interact propad 6.

Does anybody know of a good 'JOYSTICK' for use with MAME ? I'm looking for something along the lines of arcade sticks in terms of play/resistance/springiness, but I can't afford to go buy one of the professional arcade sticks like the HotRod or SlikStik.
I have an MS Sidewinder Pro 3D, and some cheapo stick (Gravis Defender, maybe?), but neither has the same feel to it.
Now that we're doing the MAME club thing, I tried BB last night (btw, that's a cool game, though I sucked and had no idea what I was doing), and using my MS Sidewinder pad (the pad was hooked up to the PC already) just didn't cut it.

I have an old Sidewinder gamepad (not USB) and it works great for almost everything including most Mame games. I am more of a gamepad person than a joystick person, so it works out very well for me. I also have a Sidewinder gamepad USB (which actually looks the same as the older model) but it works nowhere near as well as my original Sidewinder.

Well, this morning I stopped by Radio Shack, and spent a few minutes trying to decide whether to go with the PS-2 to USB adapter, or the DB15 Gameport to USB adapter.
As I already have several PC gamepads/sticks, and only a couple of standard Sony Playstation gamepads, I went with the DB15 to USB adapter.
I haven't tried it yet, but I assume it will work in Windows just fine. I'm hopeful I can use it with Suse 8.2, though.
As for controllers, I have a never-used Logitech Wingman Precision gamepad, the above-mentioned MS Sidewinder gamepad, an original MS Sidewinder 3D Pro stick, and the above mentioned Gravis Defender stick. All use DB15 gameport connectors.
Tonight I intend to get XMAME working with Suse 8.2, and hopefully I'll be able to use the gameprot to USB adapter with it. While at the Shack I also bought a triple RCA-plug coupler. My ultimate goal here is to run MAME on the laptop, with the video and audio piped to the 27" JVC in the den, using a game controller instead of the keyboard or mouse. That way I can play in the recliner, as God intended!

Britboy, Star Wars in MAME is the holy grail of controller setup. The best way to play this, according to the guys over at http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm is to find a used original controller and wire it up as an analog joystick. If that is too extreme or costly for you I suggest finding a analog flight stick at the local salvation army. I grabbed a used Logitech wingman 3-axis analog stick for $2.99. I calibrated it in windows and futz’d about with the sensitivity in MAME and was able to get my Star Wars fix. Good luck to you.
