I found one in a small game shop while on a trip to Japan. It's not shrink wrapped, but looks brand new, has a nice box and two of the "dogbone" controllers. I know the Japanese top loader was more sought after because you can use AV cables, but what is this thing worth?

Trying to decide if I should keep it, or not.

They fetch about $100 new

Hmm, I wonder if they have significantly better graphics (i.e. no banding or whatever) than the US would have had with an A/V cord?

Actually, they sell considerably lower than $100. The last one I saw online went for $49.99, and I've seen them go as high as $80, but they're usually around $60.

While they are in demand for the AV function, most people don't want them due to the inconvenience of having to use a convertor with all of their US NES games (which are already much bigger to begin with!

And...I'm looking for one :D

Don't worry about the lack of shrinkwrap -- they come without it brand new, so yours is likely brand new, too.

And yes, the picture quality IS better than the US toploader. The vertical lines that everyone seems to hate so much are, indeed, gone. But that's not just from the addition of the A/V output. I modded my US toploader to output A/V, and I still see the lines, they're just cleaner! :)

This newer Japanese console is a top quality item and certainly the best way to enjoy Famicom imports, especially Famicom Disk System games. I would hold on to it. And by the way, I paid about $120 for mine after shipping from Japan.

True, on eBay the tend to go for less. I know there is a Hong Kong site out there that sells them for $60 guaranteed new, but shipping is $40.

There is a UK site that sells them for $95 but shipping is about $10, but everything else on their site sells for almost double what it is worth too.

I am looking for one too :D

Wow...that's a bit steep, but shipping from Japan does add a chunk to em. I'd say loose one is worth around $40 + shipping. Here's what they've been going for on eBay:

Brand new in the box - $66: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3054015555&category=3617

New in box - $70 no bids: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055005050&category=3617

Like new in the box - $49.99: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055474817&category=3617

Ah...sweet...

Now I wonder if maybe I'll just have to pick up one of these and a disk system instead of using the oldschool Sharp Twin (which I might add Gamechoice still hasn't sent :P)
