i just bought risk for ps2 today brand new at best buy. after noticing some oddly loud noises coming from the disk when i power the ps2 on and off i looked at the disk and saw that it has a blue bottom instead of a clear one like my other ps2 games. are there other ps2 games with a blue bottom like this? i usually thought that meant it was a burned copy?

Not quality, quantity.
They are usually used when the developer doesn't need the space for the amount of info a DVD disc will hold.

Is it seriously bad for the PS2 to use it standing up? I have mine like it but haven't used it a ton since situating it so...GCN has been getting all my love. I'll have to get it right-side-up if it's detrimental to the longevity of the system...

It doesn't matter. The cd is locked in place so it won't come loose.
The only thing that might make a difference is some people say that standing the PS2 up helps the heat to dissipate better. But I think that is a matter of opinion.

The system was originally designed to be used vertically, using it as such sure won't hurt the thing.
Hell, when my original Playstation was on its way out I had to turn it on and then flip it upside down to get it to work.

Well,I don't want to debate over the vertical position thing..
I'm only speaking from experience and from what I've read and people I've talked to/Techs etc....It's not good to play it in the vertical position..
For some reason the disc wobbles and hits the lens..
I could of swore I read an article about this somewhere.
Something about Sony addmitting to some mistake/problem,,(I can't verify that)
I've had friends/family members etc..tell me about having problems with the PS2s in the vertical positions..
You'll know your having a problem when you start seeing lines on the bottom of the games..
I tested it out..I stood one of the PS2 up and got some thin scratch lines on the disc..then I played it in the horizontal position..and tried another game and got no sctraches/lines..
I won't play them in the vertical position..I just store them that way.
I own 4 PS2's..
Two of them I sent back to Sony for a free Repair already..
This info is just from my experience..So I could be wrong..

well i did have it in the vertical position, but it only makes the noises on this one particular disk, so i thought it might have something to do with it being blue. but i will keep my ps2 horizontal from now on ;)

It seems every video game show on G4 and Game Show Network don't reccomend placing your PS2 in the vertical position. They even said on G4TV.Com the program one of the host had a disc badly strached up because of that

I've had my PS2 in the vertical position for 3 years now and I've never had a problem with it destroying, or even scratching discs.
I've had DRE's before, but that's not due to the system's orientation-that's just cheap parts.

Hmm...sounds like it depends largely on the temperament of the particular unit you have. I'll put mine horizontally as it seems impossible to tell which "temperament" my unit is.
Poor quality workmanship. I hope Nintendo beats Sony next gen.

Yeah, I'm with Oob on this one, always had it vertical, never had an issue. I've also never had any repair issues. Though from time to time I have DvD screwups, I attribute this to crap DvD software on the thing, and intend to get a real DvD player at some point in the near future to replace my Ps2. That said, my Ps2's a peach, and there are a few games I get a louder noise on, or a clicking sound or whatnot, I suspect it has something to do with how those discs were burned, as it's an always thing with some discs and a never thing with others.

I used to get a clicking noise with Dynasty Warriors 2 when that first came out, but I've never had a problem with any other disk, nor any DRE's on my release day system.

The louder drive noises are usually only on the CDROM games. The reason for this is that a DVD has a higher transfer and read rate than a CDROM, meaning the CDROM must spin faster to get the data off at the same rate. My friend and I have had several games that are louder.
Also, I have had my ps2 vertical for a while, and the one I had before it left scratches, but this new ps2 hasnt had a problem, yet. I have only had it for a few months though. I am now thinking about rearranging.
