View Full Version : Hmm... help, please? [fighting games]

This relates to my recent obsession of fighting games. I was wondering, out of these three games, which one should I focus on first?

Street Fighter 3: Double Impact (DC)
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike (DC)
Capcom vs. SNK 2 (DC or PS2)

I've been thinking about this one for a little while... any suggestions? Thanks in advance. :)

SF3: Third Strike is really expensive these days. That's all I know :)

I agree with maxlords on SF3: third strike. It's becoming more harder to come by.

Actually, I think it's the most hardest. :hmm:

By the way, I've got a sealed Not for Sale copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 -- Japanese Dreamcast. Anything unusual about that?

So, you're all saying that I should target Third Strike first? Thanks! :)

BAH! Dont get Third Strike first!!! Get CvS2! That is easily better than 3rd S. It has a deeper system, more characters, cooler stages, more combos to learn, too many grooves to list and so on. Definitely get 3rd S if its cheap, but get CvS2 first.

Get Capcom vs. snk2 . If you have a human player to fight with. I got tired of playing the computer, so I traded it in. None of my homeboys like fighting games O_O

No.

CvS2 is pretty good (many will disagree) but Third Strike is far superior in every way except the amount of characters.

CvS2 has better stages? :hmm: What are you smoking? The only good one is the raining rooftop, the rest are crap except the windmills one which is decent.

BTW, I got my Third Strike new for $9.99 from Capcom. :)

I agree with Butta 100%, especially on the backgrounds: WTF was Capcom thinking? I wouldve loved to see more classic stages, updated. And that damned Morrigan sprite still gives me the willies.

CvS2 was rather junky, especially if you were going to play any SNK characters. Ugh, they were so weak...

I'm hearing greater support for Third Strike... should I forget about Double Impact entirely? Cause I'm definitely getting Third Strike. I better get it now before the price puts Radiant Silvergun to shame! :o

Butta, I guess you got the game when it first came out. Lucky bastich. :)

Third Strike. Absolutely. This is pure personal opinion, of course. I always felt it was deeper than CvsSNK2.

But pricewise, you can always go with Double Impact and get 2/3 of the Third Strike experience. ;)

Get 3rd Strike. The game is far better then either of the other two choices. The game engine is more solid, and its got less stupid crap in it (double impact's Ibuki infinities, cvs2's Blanka's roll cancel electricity). I can't argue against the effectiveness of chun-li in 3s, but its definitely the best fighter on the dreamcast.
I've played cvs2 since it came out, and it really is a shallow game-it's basically just poke with high priority moves, roll cancels, staying on the defensive, and doing a level 3 super/custom combo. There's more to it then that, but not much more.

Wow, im surprised that most people support 3rd S more than CvS2. 3rd S is a good game, dont get me wrong, but i never really like that many games without insane combos and crazy stuff like that.
I also like that you can change ratios and minor stuff with CvS2.

Dunno, Terry is pretty damn strong as is Iori.

I've played some damn good Geese's as well online.

Ryo and Kyo were pretty weak though.

Terry is excellent as well as Iori. They have great moves, and pretty long range attacks. Probably the best SNK characters to use. Rock is also up there. Nakoruru was damn good in CvS also.

Nako OWNED in CvS1. She lost alot of stuff in 2, though.

Good SNK characters in CvS2?
Geese-he could dizzy SO easily, and the counters were anti roll cancel.
Yamazaki-he could really keep you out-if he kept the pink drill from cvs1, he woulda been one of the best for sure.
Chang-dies if you get him into the corner, but he's a pain in the ass to fight against thanks to Choi.
Joe-he's really solid. Maybe not the best, but he's up there.
Both Iori and Kyo were really good-Iori has RC triple punch and a ghetto custom combo of sweeps, and Kyo has some of the most damaging combos in the game, and the d+fierce in the air(captain kirk move LOL )

None of them, however, were really as good as Blanka, Sagat, Cammy, A-Sakura, or A-Bison, except maybe Geese. But they were definitely contenders.

Yamazaki's one of the better characters? Aw, yeah. He's one of my absolute faves! Iku zo... Iku zo... IKU ZO... Kakatte koi yo... ITIDARO GA YO! IPPEN SHINU DE KOI!!!

CvS2 does sound tempting, but Third Strike is one sweet-ass fighting game. It got a "10" on this one great fighting game site... Third Strike it is! Thanks for everyone's advice! :)

Oh, and Iori Yagami is God. Glad to hear he kicks ass in CvS2! Regarding another favorite, how strong is Akuma in both CvS2 (including Shin Akuma) and in Third Strike?

Yep, now I'm deciding on what to get after Third Strike. It's now between these four fighters:

Capcom vs. SNK 2
Project Justice
Guilty Gear
Guilty Gear X

What's everyone's opinion on these?

In CvS2 Shin Akuma has absolutely no vitality whatsoever. He can hurt you with his insane combos and infinite, but considering he won't live long enough to really make use of them, he sucks. Normal Akuma isn't too bad thanks to the inclusion of the Demon Flip move. and custom combos. I'd say Ryu was better, but Akuma still isn't bad.

As for your next choice on a fighter...Guilty Gear 1 sucked. X was pretty good, although its sort of a crazy fighter like a mix of street fighter and marvel 2. CvS2, we all know my thoughts on it-decent game, but they coulda done better.

Couldn't go wrong with Virtua Fighter 3 or King of Fighters Dream Match ;) and if you'd want to import, Super Street Fighter II X or Vampire Chronicles are both good games too.

Whats his infinite? Ive never seen his...

I would either pick up CvS2 or Virtua Fighter 4 (PS2 obviously) I absolutely love VF4 also, because you cant really button mash to win.
Skip GGX and get GGX2 if you wanted to get one of those.

I suck at most advanced techniques in fighting games, infinites included. I surrender and I confess: I'm a scrub. I thrive on cheapness. Well, I used to. I've become a lot better at all fighting games... maybe except for Tekken. Those moves are hard to pull off sometimes, so I'm still cheap in Tekken. :P

VF4? Meh. To be honest, Virtua Fighter never really interested me that much, but it does look intriguing, especially this "evolution" concept. Let me put it this way: If I were to choose just one VF game, which one should it be?

So, from what I understand, the original Guilty Gear isn't that good. I actually rented it once. It was a pretty good fighter, but it didn't impress me THAT much. What I'm hearing is that GGX and GGX2 are very similar, but GGX2, being the harder, better, faster, stronger sequel, should be the one to get. Is that it?

It may take a while, but I will end up with Third Strike in my DC collection. CVS2 on the PS2 will follow, with Guilty Gear X2 right after that. BTW, I haven't heard much on Project Justice, but being the sequel to the underrated fighter Rival Schools, I'm tempted to check it out. Thanks to everyone for influencing my desicion. It's pretty much cemented now. :D

There is no "cheapness".

GG1 had the problem of having infinite and easily done Instant Kills that ended the match completely. GGXX, I'd say, is the superior title, but hell, I just like I-no, and she's not in X.
If you're picking just one VF, make it VF4 Evolution. The trick to a VF game is to learn all the stuff one character can do, and stick with them-there's simply too much in the game for anybody to really master everyone.

And I can't remember what SA's infinite was-I only ever play in the arcade, where he is not playable, and thus, when I do play at home, no one bothers picking him, since it won't matter at the arcade anyway. Although one guy over in Brighton "Final Showdown" found some really sick stuff with Orochi Iori, obviously, its useless in the sort of setting he practices for.

Everyone likes I-No, or so I'm told. Hey, I like her design. What could be better than a vixen witch whom we know nothing about and who's main weapon is a guitar? Aw, yeah. 8-)

I guess I'm not that much of a scrub after all. I can't string together large combos for crap, but I vary my strategies, so I guess I'm at least an intermediate fighter. Then again, the AI opponents in most fighting games are cheating bastards, so that's probably why I often feel so inadequate at fighting games. But a real human vs. human duel is what fighting games are all about. I'm not a scrub after all. Splendid.

Third Strike, then CvS2, then Guilty Gear XX. As of now, these are my top priorities. Thanks! :)
