I played this game once when I was about 7 or 8 and really enjoyed it:

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa by Konami - originally for Famicom, but also a rare release on NES

I know it's a really long shot, but I'm hoping to someday track down a copy of it for NES. Does anyone know of one, or just have any idea where a good place to start looking would be? Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks :D

That rare release you're talking about is probably the fabled 'Baby Mario' pirate cart that has been mentioned in hushed whispers of video rental purveyors.

Isn't that Dire 51's website? If so, Hey Dire 51, I'm pretty sure Baby's Day Out WASN'T released for the Genesis. It was completed, and a ROM exists on the 'Net, but I don't think a release actually happened.

AS for the Fami game, I don't think that game ever left Japan.

haha yea Bratwurst, that's the one!
The only time I played it was at a friend's birthday party, and she had rented it
I remember the oddest things, I swear...

So...maybe if I tried old video stores I might find something? Or do you think there's not a video store left anywhere that still has leftover NES stuff...?

check every non-chain video store in your area if you can. Mom & Pop video stores have been the bread and butter of my nes collection, and I'm a completist (I only buy complete/mint games). You'd be surprised how many of them still have nes stuff. Whenever I go to a new city, I find a yellowpages and call every non-chain video store in the city. On average 5-10% of them will still have nes stuff. Usually, they are so excited to finally see some idiot interested in this stuff (me) that they are willing to blow them out the door at rock-bottom prices for fear that they may never see someone interested in those old games again.

One last thing, mom & pop video stores owned by orientals in outskirt/residential type areas have been an absolute goldmine for me!

PRETTY sure?

It wasn't released on Genesis. Someday someone will actually read these lists.

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa - AKA Baby Mario, what a great game this was, or at least I thought so when I was 10 years old.

I remember going to the video store and seeing a makeshift Nes box on the shelf complete with magic marker artwork. The box said Super Mario Bros. 4 - Baby Mario. what I actually rented was a famicom game with an adaptor.

Here are the facts on this game. Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (which Im sure Im not spelling correct) was a FAMICOM DISK SYSTEM GAME made by Konami (i think). the only official release of this game was the disk system version. Somewhere along the way a pirate famicom cart was made of the disk system game. This pirate cart is what is known as baby mario and trickled its way into the states via actual carts and emulation.

I'm pretty sure that I have the rom somewhere, if anyone wants it to check out this nutty game.

How the "Baby Mario" title came into the picture is beyond me, this game has NOTHING in common with the mario games, but it sure did get a hell of a lot os us interested.

Thanks for the info!! Yea, whenever I would think about the game, I would always wonder why it was ever associated with Mario Bros...I think that weirdness is part of the reason why I thought I was making it all up, haha

I'd love to check out the ROM if you can find it! :D

Well, I've never played it, but the gameplay DOES look like a Mario game.

Someone probaly got the bright idea of making a few bucks and making a pirate for the States.

I wonder how much one of those pirated copies would go for? This might just be a valuable pirate?

I have seeb the pirate cartridge go on eBay from time to time. It's not as unheard of as you might think.

I think it's Bokette, not Bokutte. Pretty close though!

I never guessed this game had come out in the US in any format, and I'll have to take a look at that MD (Genesis?) port as well.

A shame it wasn't more popular, I've read it was one of Konami's better FDS titles.

Yea, it's generally not that hard to entertain an 8 year old who's barely played any video games before, but still...I just remember this being a cute, easy, fun game.

What's an MD port? (I know I know, I have a lot to learn...)

Well, in my personal system of abbreviations, MDj would've been more correct as I'm wondering if this "Genesis" port was only on the Japanese Mega Drive, or what the deal is there.

To sum it up:
MD is "Mega Drive," and although the European Mega Drive is PAL those games are roughly the same as their US versions in that a lot of them play on the Genesis (especially the Genesis 3) and have the same shape cartridges.
MDj and MDeur, therefore, are "Japanese Mega Drive" and "European Mega Drive," respectively.

No, it in fact is Bakutte. Check up on your Hiragana. if you look at the BLUE Hiragana Characters on the title screen of the game the BLUE characters go like this : BA-KU-( the third blue character is a TSU, but in this case it is used to extend the "u" part from the character "Ku")-TE.

The first two words (characters in RED on the title screen are Katakana for
Ba-i-o_Mi-ra-ku-ru
Then The Blue Characters underneath are Hiragana for
Ba-Ku-te
Then the last 2 characters in red on the lower line are Katakana again for
U-Pa

My bad; I was just playing zombie and repeating what was written on a certain Japanese website that sells FDS games. I can't really use them as a gold standard in this sort of thing, but there you go.

Apparently I've missed a lot here...

Raccoon Lad - well, damn it all, now I need to go change that around. :( Oh well... that's what I get for not doing enough research...

Jive3D - you said that the only official release of the game was on the FDS. Not so. Konami rereleased it in cart format (along with Akumajuo Dracula) for the Fami in 1993. When they did that, they also added an "Easy"mode. Just check out the title screen shot I used in the review. There were a couple of other minor changes (mostly musically), but it was an official rerelease. Interestingly, regarding the proper spelling of the title, my contact (who is 100% Japanese) called it Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa when he sent me my copy of the game. I wonder why?

username - if you'd like to play BMBU, just drop me a PM.

Dire's right. Despite what I've heard to the contrary over the years, Bio Miracle - Bokutte Upa WAS rereleased on cartridge in 1993 (February 26, to be exact), at a budget price of 3900 yen.

Here's the Disk System version, stolen from an auction:

Because that's actually the game's proper title. Believe nothing else.

The fact that Konami DID actually release a Famicom Cart version actually explains something that I have been wondering about, Mainly the music.

The Cartridge that I rented when I was about 8 had ALMOST the same songs as the ROM that I have now, but what seems to be a recessed melody in the rom that I have was in fact the MAIN melody in level one on the cart that I rented. (I'm very good at remember video game tunes and at noticing differences in re-releases of games, example: music from Pac-Mania in the arcades and other home releases has full songs, where the GBA collection version only has loops of portions of those original songs)... Back to Bio...

I'm not sure which one I rented and which game the ROM I have is from. But the Rom I have does have the EASY/ NORMAL setting. So I probably rented the pirate cart back in the day.

Thanks for clearing that up!

So he was right then. Not that I doubted him, but this thread did make me wonder.

Jive3D - Apparently the cart version is somewhat difficult to find in Japan, and when it is found, it's on the pricey side. My contact has yet to get himself an actual cart because it's so expensive.

I'd just like to pipe in and say that no, I wasn't trying to be sarcastic with my post earlier. Maybe I had the title right and maybe not--either case it would've just been myself getting lucky, since I don't know Japanese. Feel free to question what I'm saying. I might have a reason for what I do, but it's of no use to anybody unless I have to explain it :)

pretty hard to judge emotion on a msg board about an obscure famicom game. ^_^
