View Full Version : Piece of Junk You Can't Part With

Come on now, we've all got at LEAST one of these. It's the old tabletop whose labels have peeled off and who's screen is irreversibly scratched ("but it still works"), it's the game console that's in pristine condition but won't actually turn ON ("I'll fix it someday"), it's the "thing" that you don't even know what it is but it looks cool and is worth having around despite the wife's incessant complaints...
What's your favorite "piece of junk"? Describe it, and tell us why you're not letting it go.

An NES Deck that I can't get to work, even after replacing the 72 pin connector.
I'm seriously considering giving up on NES and just playing it via emulation.

my copy of "Mechwarrior" for SNES
the cart is broken and looks awfully (full of writings)
but the box(art) looks so good.....I can't trash it
not to forget that I played it to death

A copy of Wizard's "Halloween". Not an original cart, but a Hozer copy with my own handmade label. Not worth a spit, but it's what I used to break the Twin Galaxies World Record. Not exactly "junk," but it *is* valueless.

The Vis, and all stuff related to it. I hate it, it takes up valuable room, and I wish I had never bought it, but I just can't get rid of it...it's part of the collection, no matter how dumb it is.

I don't have a piece of junk per se, but more of smaller pieces of junk that could almost make a piece of junk. I've got old hard drives, PC cables, a video card and an old Pro Audio Spectrum card laying in a plastic stackable drawer. The wife hasn't complained but at times the stuff gets splayed out when I dig for something I need to use/want to look at.

Both of my Texas Instruments 99 4/A computers. I have one silver & black, and one white. The silver & black was my family's, and I bought the white one off eBay a few years ago.
Neither one works, not sure why...I think my RF modulator is just shot, but I don't know enough about fixing computer to say for sure.
God I loved that computer when I was a kid. My sisters got it right before I was born, so it was my first video game experience ever...A-maze-ing was the best game ever :)
Did anyone else around here ever have a TI?

Yeah, my dad sold his Timex Sinclair for one, which is now dead. I've disassembled it, put it back together (minus some of the screws I believe :D) and put it back in its box. It now sits on the shelf on top of my desk. Piece of trash but I'm keeping it.
Besides that, the Venture cart I got with my recent Atari 2600 purchase has a really messed up label, but I don't think I'm going to be getting rid of it :D

My messed up Donkey Kong tabletop. I found it around a year ago at a flea market for $1. I was so happy that i went home and cleaned it up. Its missing the top sticker, and the battery cover, but i love it. Im not sure if it works, because i just use it as a display piece. :)

Scramble tabletop, screen irreversibly scratched, still works. I can't let it go because twenty years ago I played it ALL THE TIME.
Damn, Joe, have you been poking around in my attic?
Oh, and is there anything you can do about those irreversibly scratched screens?
Yeah I got two Atari SLM 804 Laser printers, one's not working, huge heavy things, but never even used them with my MegaST. Keep lumping them about.....

I've kept a junky old Tetris handheld right by my keyboard for years now, I play it while I'm waiting for pages to load up. I know there are a million of these out there, but this one feels so right, it would take a mega-trade to get away from me.

My Channel F console. It looks great but doesn't work. The only thing I get after powering it up is a blank green screen. Therefore, the only Channel F cart I own (Baseball) is also useless. I keep it because it looks cool and retro, and I doubt I'd play it much even it did work. :)
Close runner-up would be my RCA Studio II, which I keep for similar reasons. I don't have the special power supply/switchbox, so it's useless. It would probably work if I had the switchbox though, it looks practically brand new.
To be honest, I really don't have much of that sort. I'm not really a pack rat at all (runs in the family, my dad is the same way). The only thing I can think of at the moment is a Camerica Super Sonic joystick boxed, who's battery compartment is partially corroded. The joystick works, just not too well.
I did try to sell this, but no one seems to want it. Its days are limited at my house, that is for sure...

I've got three Super Nintendos. I only need one. For some reason, I've kept the other two, despite the fact that it honestly looks like someone took a sledgehammer to one of them. I guess it's safe to assume that the original owner had played the Super NES version of Pit Fighter.
I also own a copy of Rocky and Bullwinkle for the NES with a large hole punched in it. I actually BOUGHT it that way, if you can believe it. I just thought it was hilarious that such an awful game would be so badly damaged... I can't help but think that the damage was intentional.

Hehhehheh... I've got like three, I don't even remember what they look like, they're in my closet somewhere...
I used to be able to say my Game.com, but thankfully the batteries corroded in it and I had a reason to throw it away. Now all I have is a good chunk of my NES carts with ripped labels and writing, like my copy of Ski or Die.

Probably not the interpretation of the question you were looking for, but I've got a Mattel Aqarius that has been in my trade pile for years. It's not that I don't want to part with it, it's just that I can't find anybody to trade it to.
As for crap I hang onto, I've got an NES, I hacked with a game genie in an attempt to make a top loader. Even when I was done it still blinked. I plan to pull it out at somepoint, I just don't know when. Until then it sits on a shelf.

I also have a grey Game Boy I've had since I was, oh, seven years old. I never play it any more, but it still works. Nintendo made some damn hardy stuff bck in the day.

Looks a lot nicer than my POS stick LOL
http://home.ptd.net/~scottith/STICK.JPG
It's the stick from when I got my first system (1981), and it's the only thing I have left from my original collection. This was basically the 'prototype' for a lot of modifications and wiring experiments over the years, as evident ;). Besides changing the cord, button spring, and plastic stick multiple times over the years (from use), switches were added to the back (for use with a few game tricks), a button in the front (which once controlled a firing module that had been added inside), and an LED on top. I distinctly recall trying to get the LED to light up every time the fire button was pressed.....and ended up shorting out my system in the process! (never did get that to work...). I remember the "ring" of contact points on the stick was always breaking - toothpicks were one early fix I came up with. I would "splint" them all around the ring for support. The bicycle grip handle that adorns it was something a friend and I did simply b/c we thought it looked neat (it also helped keep that damn stick cover on!). It's been relegated to a drawer the last few years; maybe I'll fix it up again (for the 80 millionth time...)

I have a box of Atari carts that were chewed on by a dog..(I got for free)
Some of the games are really chewed up bad,"but" they work..
The shame is some of the carts are not very common carts like Poo Yan..
So I keep them around incase I need the rom chip to replace a non working cart..

I have a PC graveyard in my parents basement, about 4 c128's in various condtions, a c64 or 2 in various states of disassembly and a pile of drives of various makes and models. An amiga 500 with bodega bay, case open, guts splayed, a 486dx/66 (case open, guts splayed) a TI-99/4a (silver case w/ expansion box-- case open, guts splayed) a timex sinclair (bubble board removed, click keys soldered in -- case open, guts splayed)
But the crowning POS is my ancient trackfeed pre dot matrix printer which took typewrite ribbons. It still works but you can't get the trackfeed paper anymore.
All of the above monsters work, and could easily be screwed shut, but I like the look of the mad scientist's basement with guts of old failed experiments creeping into one another. Maybe it's me.

Quite a few things:
...a box full of partially working 2600 joysticks, paddles, etc. with labels on them with what works and what doesn't, that I'm quite sure I will never get around to fixing...
...a big and clunky nonfunctioning Apple external hard drive from my Mac Plus days....
...a working Apple printer, also from Mac Plus days....
...an Atari 1200XL machine that works sometimes and sometimes not, which I replaced with an Atari 130XE...
...an IBM 8088 computer, which was used regularly from
1988-1995(!) as my family's main computer...
...my recently departed digital camera, which quit unexpectedly after leaving it connected to my computer and refuses to turn on...
...Little League Baseball for the NES, which broke after I wrenched it out of my Super 8...
...my Super 8, which still works but now I am too paranoid to use it due to above event....
That's all I can think of right now, but there's more, much more!

Sounds like my list. I have a lot of "crap" I have acquired that I keep just because I can't bring myself to give it away and it's too crappy to ship via eBay. Included in that list:
Apple IIe -- got this from a friend, some of the guts are missing and it doesn't work. Came with an external dual floppy drive unit.
Bell & Howell Apple IIe -- Never saw one of these before, looks just like an Apple II except the case is a dark gray instead of the light tan color. Same condition as the above apple.
Kaypro II luggable laptop -- complete with dual floppies and everything! Comes on but I don't have any old versions of DOS to boot it up anymore. Probably weighs 30 lbs or so.
Mac Plus -- Got this a few months ago at the local thrift store. It was marked at .99 cents but I went on half price Wednesday and got it for .49 cents! AND IT WORKS. I have no idea what to do with it though. Right now I'm using it as a night light.
2400 Baud External Modem -- this modem is probably 2 feet x 2 feet in size and weighs at least 10 lbs. It's all metal with heat sinks and lights everywhere. Kept for the "cool retro" value.
300 baud acoustic coupler modem -- I got this in 1986 and it was outdated then. Still, it's so cool looking ... I'm sure I'll never let it go.
And so on and so forth. You should see my garage. Or maybe you shouldn't.

I have a Sega Saturn I got from this local flea market for 6$!!!! thats right 6$$$$$ 6 bucks!!
it is in great shape but only has the controller, no plugs, wires nothing, but it sets proudly on my file cabinet saying to all "one day I shall return to greatness!" or something like that.
Also I hooked up the power supply cable from my Dreamcast and the Saturn seemed to work fine, i put in a reg music cd and it seems to read and reset it , so far so good!

By the way, I'm not sure how a ROB game got in your copy of Ikari Warriors, but you should be able to play it by plugging a second controller into your NES. You can use it rather than ROB the video robot to control the onscreen action.

Ooooh so you're saying that my copy of Gyromite isn't completely useless?
Dave Reinquest
11-13-2003, 02:16 PM
It may be Nintendo's mistake.
Back in the day, in an attempt to cut costs, Nintendo would release some of it's Famicom carts as NES carts with simple pinout adaptors inside each cart. I'm not sure on ikari Warriors but Gyromite was one that was done this way. Anyone notice the sleeping guy in Gyromite looks like Dr. Wily?
Dr. Morbis
11-13-2003, 02:48 PM
Some guy probably rented Ikari Warriors and liked it a lot. Since he had gyromite as a pack-in from his deluxe set, he probably swapped the circuit boards and returned the Ikari cart with the gyromite circuit board in it. This way he could play the Ikari game for EVAR.

My mortal kombat pog collection hahah...
nah id have to say my NES ROB ... he collects the most dust.
I have several of these "prize pieces" around.
The first one is my NES ROB that's missing the little glasses. EVERYTHING else is there, even the styrofoam box and the little spinny discs. But if he can't focus on the screen, he's worthless.
I, too, have a box of Atari 2600 joysticks and paddles that need a little repair work. Whenever I come across a console without controllers, though, I usually actually do dig through this box, start repairing, and come out with two working joysticks and a set of paddles to complete the set. So they're not really junk, right?!? :)
The crown jewels of my collection that never should have been bought are my standalone Pong systems. I have 7 or 8 of these things that I NEVER play at all. My Atari Super Pong Ten sits on a display shelf next to ROB, but the rest of the pongs are in a box. I even modified some of them, adding AC adapter jacks or AV outputs... what a waste of time! It was fun then, though.

My entire Atari collection. It's falling apart, but I can't part with it. It made me what I am. And it may be completely useless, at least it looks nice.
All the old Macs I acquired a few years ago during my "Mac Zealot" phase. When I was buying every old Mac I could afford. These are what's left over.
All the PC games I have accumulated over the years before I became a Mac user. Most are useless now. Even the Mac versions. And I don't play games on my computer anyway, so they just sit there.. in a box. Until I can figure out what to do with them. Maybe eBay them or trade them into a store. Whatever they'll take. Even if I get a penny, at least it'll leave my house.
Same with all the Floppies. I haven't used a Floppy in years. I don't plan to. But I just can't throw them away.. so here they stay forever.

My second SNES.
I bought this in June 2002 after the overwhelming regret of selling my original SNES back in 1997.
It's in great condition, boxed, manuals, booklets, poster, all packaging (bags etc.).
However, it's yellowed badly. I've got two other SNES's (both nice and grey) but do you think I'd just ditch the yellow one in favour of these two? NO WAY!
I've had this yellowed one for even longer than my original that I bought in 1995. There's no way I shall ever part with it.
