View Full Version : Whatever happened to Ocean?

I remember playing a lot of Ocean's games on the SNES (and etc...played those games again, not fond of them at all).

It just hit me a few days ago, that I never hear about Ocean nowadays. I believe that's a good thing, but I might be wrong.

So, are they still around? Or did they went bankrupt?

I was actually just wondering about this myself. I don't believe they're around anymore, so they must have either went under or were bought up by somebody.

Yeah...that's a good thing. They'll be like 3DO nowadays, if they were still around, in my opinion...

Well, I never had a problem with Ocean, but I can't say I miss them, either, so...

It depends what you know Ocean for really. I grew up playing their Spectrum games and they put out a lot of good quality stuff like Robocop, Pang & Batman, not to mention an absolutely amazing conversion of Chase HQ (which I remember one magazine giving it a higher score than for it's 16 bit cousins). I wasn't so fond of their Amiga/ST output and I can't really remember any console games of theirs I was a fan of.

Spectrum/C64 fans will generally remember them fondly but I'm not sure about everyone else.

Ocean? You mean those guys who mostly based all of their games off of movies? Meh... never really a fan of them, though Robocop on the NES wasn't bad. Doesn't really compare to Robocop for the arcade, and that was made by Data East. *shrug*

I think it's safe to say that they are dead. I checked their record of games over on GameFAQs, and they stopped making games after the Playstation. Farewell, Ocean. You were mediocre, but you were still better than Acclaim. :(

I think that Ocean was purchased by Infogrames.

Yep. That burn was quite intentional. Thanks. LOL LOL LOL

Just a quick divert in the topic: Shouldn't Acclaim be out of business by now? They were supposed to go bankrupt about four months ago. Where are they now? :hmm:

BTW, ever notice that Robocop 2 and Darkman are practically the same game? Creative minds at work there...

Darkman rocks. Sam Raimi is God. Look out for Bruce Campbel near the end. That is all.

I know they did Jurassic Park for NES and SNES, and Darkman for NES.

Okay, these two sentences hurt my brain. I'd have let the first one go, as maybe it was a simple error, but I can't ignore two in a row.

Here's a list of their Spectrum games (http://www.ysrnry.co.uk/bycompany/Ocean.htm) with review scores next to each title (either out of 10 or 100%). Just wanted to prove they were good once. :)

Alright. They might've been good on the Spectrum, but my memories of them were much worse.

Evan was correct. According to the The-Underdogs.org:

One of the biggest European software companies ever, OCEAN both developed and published dozens of PC games of varying quality in the 1990s. It was later bought out by France's software giant Infogrames sometime in 1997.

Ahh...so that's what happened to them. That's good, I guess. Infogrames is alright.

Well, excuse me! I didn't know the grammar police were out to get me. :fist:

:P

You know, it's not like I'm needling you about infinitives or some bizarre grammatical shit that noone (myself included) understands. But the difference between past, present, and future tense is basic fucking english here.

Anyway, it's not like I really insulted you (until now, possibly). I just stated that it caused me physical pain to read.

Hey man, we all make mistakes sometimes. I like to think I ususally do pretty well with all that stuff, but maybe I was just having an off night. Doesn't mean you have to be an ass about it.

I know they made the Addams Family for the SNES, my favorite platform game of all time.

iirc they published worms, which is quite a good game of course. ok, they didn't produce it (team17 did), so this probably doesn't count :) oh, and jungle strike was published by them as well i think.
