View Full Version : Favorite Box Art (Any Era)

What is your favorite box art in any genre or era? This one has to be my all-time, #1 fav:
http://www.intvfunhouse.com/activision/box/dreadnaught.jpg
It really describes the game well, and shows really conveys the feeling of what you are up against. It also doesn't cheat the buyer by showing stuff that isn't part of the game.
It's a shame, but I think that box art gets overlooked too often. I love it and consider it a great part of collecting. I love the cheesy, older stuff as well as the good ones. Then, of course, there are the blatant rip-off ones (Zellers, and the other pirates, for example).

I really dont have a favorite box art, but i think that the art for Q-boy (NES) is pretty funny. Ill have to go check my collection. :)

@IntvGene: That's a great choice. You know, when I think of great video game cover art, I think of Odyssey2, and when I think of a great Odyssy2 box, I think of Monkeyshines! It could be my fascination with monkeys again... but this is a COOL box.

I like the ones for GTA3/VC, they do a good job of incoroparting the game's style and art.

Speaking of broderbund, has anyone seen the box art for Raid on Bungeling Bay? What the heck is that guy/roboface/metallic frankenstein thing supposed to be? And what does it have to do with the actual gameplay? (where you control a helicopter and try to destroy factories in an overhead view). Very perplexing...

Totally. The exasperation on his face is clear proof of just how much that manual sucks. We've all been there, too. I have that manual on the wall in my cube at work and I'm seriously considering blowing the image up and framing it.

After having a look through my collection (in no particular order):
Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition (Saturn) - It just looks very slick.
Aqua Aqua: Wetrix 2 (PS2) - I'm very partial to cute covers! LOL
Outrun 2019 (Mega Drive) - It looks pretty cool.
Final Fantasy VIII (PSX) - I love the simplicity of FF game covers on PSX, and FFVIII has the best logo.
Soul Calibur (DC) - Very nicely done. The disc looks even better.
Sonic Adventure (DC) - I love it! The colours! So sexy!
Jet Force Gemini (N64) - The best N64 cover art.
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (N64) - Star Wars goodness, and very detailed.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (N64) - Another great Star Wars cover. I just love the X-Wing and then all the battle occuring on the ground.
Keep in mind that these are all PAL version covers. The NTSC versions probably differ.

I think it was made that way so customers would think WTF? Then go over to the game and take a look at what the game was about. Phalanx was a pretty average shoot wasn't it? I'm sure if they put a standard space ship picture nobody would have gave it a second look.

I remember reading an interview with the photographer of that. Apparently it was made to look as if the guy saw the plane and was like 'WHOA!', like it just zoomed over him. The guy was having some heart problems at the time or something tho, and couldn't really give a good expression.
but still, WTF LOL

I just bought Phalanx the other day and I thought the cover art was just rediculous. Like, you can tell they were going for a "Hey, that old guy doesn't notice the spaceship whizzing past!" kind of thing, but it's really freaking dumb. I mean, did Kemco really think more copies would sell if they used "Crazy Hilbilly Banjo Man," as the box art rather than focusing on the actual game?
Oh, and Phalanx itself is pretty mediocre.

I like a lot of the boxes for NES games...thanks to lots of unlicensed games with interesting boxes, and some licensed ones with box art that spreads onto the sides (you get to see the complete picture when you flatten the boxes).
