After this update I am now one romset and two CHD hard disk images away from being complete as of v0.77. Just to let you guy and gals know, a complete Mame set now takes up well over 17GB. Damn, time for more HD space!

Wow, I can remember MAME taking up one single floppy, then a CD, and then a DVD. Now it takes it's own HDD!

Man I just got a complete set downloaded except for 4 CHD's and now 77 comes out. I love it though!

They friggin need to stop ADDING games that don't even play at full speed on even the fastest pcs.. and start concentrating on FIXING THE GAMES THAT ARE ALREADY THERE.

I mean at least the games that are not well emulated that are from before 1984.. those at least can PROBABLY be fixed. So many have just been sitting their in their crappily emulated state.. not even touched for years. Yet the parade of new huge games that are added keeps marching on

If only I knew how to do it (or had the time to do so), I'd give those games some love myself! But alas I dont :P

I'm going to have to agree with NE146 on this, now more than ever. Have you seen some of the games that were "emulated" in this edition of MAME? They're completely unplayable... Fighting Layer just gives you a color test pattern, and Fighter's History has no sprites. What's the point in putting games in an official MAME release if they don't even work?
The problem with the MAME developers is that they've got the attention spans of gnats. They start work on a driver for a game, and then oh gee, look at this, someone just dumped a new game! I've got to make a driver for this before someone else does! All right, I've got the graphics up... now all I have to finish the sound and oh wait! Wow, I've always wanted to play this game! Maybe I should work on a driver for IT instead!
Look, do you think you can, maybe, get the emulation up to at least 90% for a given game before jumping to an entirely different one? I know you're doing this for free, but still, it's annoying.

Well, you see, this is not what Mame was ever about. Mame is about perserving as many video games as possible. Being able to play them to any degree is just a nice side effect.

As for some games not being fixed, well this is due to many reasons. Alot of times it is not because the emulation itself is not written correctly, but because the board itself was not dumped correctly in the first place. I've seen many old games in which the colors were incorrect being fixed over the years with a correct dump of some of the original roms. Getting those old boards can sometimes cause a problem. Sometimes the sound hardware is a problem to emulate, hence the samples that are needed for some of the old games. Until you really dive into the code you cannot imagine how difficult it is sometimes to just fix even the little things...especially without official system specs/documentation.

Hey I'd settle for that :D No problem using samples for some games that don't have sound. Are you saying putting samples in is what's difficult? ;) Or is it acquiring/creating samples themselves :P All I know is several cool games remain soundless... if samples are what's needed so be it! :D

Actually emulating the sound hardware can be difficult. Getting ahold of good quality samples can be a problem sometimes as well. Check out the Mame site samples section. Some new samples were added to games that previously had no sound recently.

Question: I'm currently using MAME32 for Windows (7.6). How do I update? Do I just download the new file and I'm done or what?

ddockery

Yea, just dopwnload and unzip to your current MAME directory and you're good to go. YOu'll also need to download any new roms you want to play, but otherwise that's it.

Sorry to resurrect this dead topic, but I don't see a Mame32 update at the above link. Is this not updated as well? I only get the command line version and I'm too computer illerterate to use it. :D
