Hello all.
For those of you that have been in the emu scene a while, you've probable heard of Tombstones, the free Mame burning service.

I'm just curious, is there sufficient interest at DP, both from a volunteer, and from a need standpoint, to look at doing our own little Tombstones right here?

To volunteer, you'd need a CD and/or DVD burner, full romsets, and a kind heart.

To need, well, you'd need the Roms of course, and you'd be willing to either:
A. Send blank discs and sufficient funds to cover the shipping back to you
B. Send funds appropriate to cover the cost of the blank media, and postage.

What does evryone think?

I know NG's are a popular way to go (and frankly thats the way I get most of my stuff) but not everyone has a fast pipe, reliable NNTP host etc...

I'd be willing to do it, though I don't have any romsets yet.

If we get a core group of burners, we could make sure all burners have the full sets.
Thats how Tombstones does it, one or two guys supply the rest of the burners by ftp.
Burners then supply the masses.

Right, I'd definitely be in. Every person I've had offer to make me romsets to this point have charged a good amount for their time, so to offset that I'd be more than willing to pass some sets on myself.

I have a DVD burner as well. I'd be willing to help.

I'm about to get a burner, and would also be willing to contribute.

I have a bunch of robotic burners here at work, so I could actually make a copy of a large set of CDs with about 5 minutes of work.

will the romset include CHD files for daphne and other non-MAME files?

chadtower
11-12-2003, 01:31 PM
Well, what I would copy for others would basically be whatever is supplied to me. :)

ghsqb

Personally I have all the Daphne files and would be willing to share them.
I would think the CHD files should definately be included, aas they relate to MAME.

I put this out there as an idea, but we can make it whatever the community wants it to be.

I don't have a DVD burner yet, but am getting one soon, and would absolutely be willing to provide burners and the masses with their needs.

Ok. I'll take 3 burners.

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
I meant the "burners" as in burning volunteers with the needed romsets.
But I guess you already knew that.

I'm going to have to be careful around you aren't I?
;)

I had a tough time finding a Tombstone guy to make me .64, and I'd love it if some of you guys did this.

I don't have a DVD burner, but I do have CD-RW. If anybody wanted to provide me the files (slowly overnights, I have 608k DSL), I could do burn CD-R's if it helps.

I would love to help on this, but I need a current full set as well. I am only up to about .66. I have a Sony DVD burner and woiuld love to help, so if anyhone has a set with chd I can be a burner for everyone. well as much as time allows:)

I have all the CHDs and almost all the Daphne MPEGs as well (My space ace and Dragon's Lair were actually ripped by me from my copy of the 20th anniversary DVD set!)

These things take a ton of room.. 3 DVD-Rs and counting!

I just determined I'd be In since I just lost my entire collection, 50 short of complete 0.76. I hate installing new hard drives

So, basically, if someone wants to send me out (I'll pay shipping) a set of CDs, I can do this at any time... as I said, I have access to robotic, automated burners so I could turn around sets very very quickly.

Someone just said that the complete MAME rom set is around 17 gig now? If that's that case, you're talking 4 DVDs, or (quick math) 25 CDRs? That of course doesn't include the Daphne stuff. Isn't the Dragon's Lair itself like 1.5 gig?

Maybe we could make different "packages". IE: Package one, all games without the CHD games. Package two, All games including CHD games. Package three, all games, all CHD, and all Daphne games.

I dunno, just an idea. I have CD-R as well as DVD-R.

Also, people need to specify if they have DVD-R or DVD+R, right? If I understand all that right, if you have DVD-R and burn the disks for someone with a DVD+R drive, they won't be able to read them.

If you finalize the disc, it shouldn't matter if it's -R or +R, any DVD reader shouyld be able to read them right? Isn't that the whole point?

at 25 CD-Rs that would run about 8.75 at .35/disc, plus 3.85 for priority mail and ~1.25 for cases would bring a total cost of around 13.85. at 5 min./disc it would take me a hair over two hours to make a complete set once the process is automated.

what might be easiest would be if we did complete ROM sets for, say, every 5 MAME versions, and then for the version updates between say .80 and .85, just include a 26th 'revision' CD that the user copies last and just says 'Yes To All' when Windows asks if he'd like to overwrite the older files. That way, the 'revision' CD can also include the latest versions of MAME as well, and would minimize any FTP time for the burners.

One thing I didn't check before I proposed this, is how Joe felt about it.

Joe if you check in here and read this thread, can you let me know either here in this tread or by PM if this idea bothers you in any way.

I guess that the distribution of Roms in this fashion is a little different than some of the other emu ideas we've done before.

The last thing I would want to do is cause any problems for the communtiy here at DP.

Thanks

I'd be more than willing to help with the burning services (Although I wouldnt be all that keen on sending 25 CD's out). I could probably do about 2 dvd sets a week.

But I dont have NEARLY a complete set. So I guess that puts me in the list of people interested in getting a copy.

I dont know what peoples thoughts are on pricing for doing this but I'd be willing to do it for cost (and tack on say a $10 donation to DP to help support this wonderfull community).

I would be willing to help out. I have the sony dvd burner that does + and - so not a problem there. Also I have a pretty fast connection over comcast so I could get them pretty quickly.

Okay, I just got a DVD-R/RW+R/RW combo drive, and I would be willing to help burn DVDs for people at cost. However, I don't want to be the only source for it. Handling every request for full sets could easily take over my life.

There is, of course, another problem as well. I don't yet have a full set myself. I just got a new 120gig HDD, so I have the room if someone wanted to snail mail or FTP me a set. If you wanted to FTP, I have cable and usually get a connection of about 2.4MBit/sec. I can't leave my computer on while I'm out, but I can leave it on while I sleep. If anyone's interested in either mailing me a full set or FTPing it to me, please drop me a PM.

Meanwhile, I think we should watch the CHD progress mentioned in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23630)very closely. If what he's talking about works out, that could probably reduce the size of a complete set by AT LEAST one DVD.

Currently the entire set of v0.77 takes 4 DVD-R's and this is just roms/CHD's without all of the extra samples, artworks..etc. I really hope myself that the CHD sizes are this much smaller in the next release.

Also, when/if I get my own DVD recorder this Xmas I can help with making copies for people at cost. As for now the only person that has a DVD burner I know of is my brother who lives 10+ miles away. So, for now, to do a backup for someone I have to get blank DVD's, open the PC and remove my HD, drive to his house, hook up my drive there and burn 4 DVD-Rs at 20 minutes each since his is only a 2.4X. And with all of that I have to make him happy about it since he is restricted from using his PC for 1 1/2 hours. Ugh. Still, I can do it for a price unfortunately.

Well, zek, if you're interested in trying to send them to me electronically, you can either hit me up on AIM or drop me a PM. I should have my 120gig harddrive installed and ready to be downloaded to by sometime tonite.

I don't have a problem with sending a few files, but 20GB is just too much for me :)

what if we did bittorrent? maybe not for 20GB of files, but for like CHD files and whatnot.

I'm still interested in doing the service, myself.

I saw a few torrent files in the newsgroups for the chd files not too long ago, but didn't grab them because I had the CHD's already. I know how to download via BT, but how do you go about setting torrents up?

That's a good question. I'd be willing to find out if we got the service started, or if enough people expressed interest.

I haven't read all of it but it would seem to be a good place to start if this is what we decide to do.

So when are we going to start this up?

What if we set it up like a fireman's bucket brigade. Make a waiting list of reliable members. Someone mail a copy to the first guy. That guy can either make a copy for the next person or copy what he needs and mails it to the next person.

If you guys dont feel compfortable with the honor system, perhaps it should be a 20 dollar deposite. You pay the guy above you 20 bucks to have it shipped and then you get your 20 back from the next guy when you send it out.

just an idea. I'd be happy to setup a system like this.

what does everyone else think?

I'm all for it as well. However, even tho it's 20gigs doesn't mean we can't file share it. Those of us with Broadband could simply leave the computers on all night transferring data. Mine is on 24/7 anyway. If we used a service they would simply keep checking until someone was sharing.

Somewhere in my mass of links at home I have a site w/ torrents already setup for most of the CHD files. I used them a couple weeks back to get most of them. I'll check tonight and post the link.

ya, file sharing is another option. I got the space on a computer sitting on a fatty T3. If someone can get a copy to me, I'd gladly set up a 15user FTP linux server (I could do it from my house too but I'd only be able to provide 2 or 3 users).

Try this site out for some CHD torrents. They took a while, but they all eventually worked for me:

I'd be willing to help out, I'm always looking for new rom sets, and i recently put up a new thread on the videogame forum asking for MAME ones via this methood (I'm new so i didn't know about theis tread at the time). I have two CD burners and a pretty fast DSL connection. Only thing is right now, i don't have any complete rom sets.
