So I bought Gladius, expecting some rolicking good chopemup.
What I got was an excellently delivered strategy game akin to Final Fantasy Tactics and Ogre Tactics. Color me confused/suprised.
Anyone else been surprised by a game, expected one thing got something else entirely?

I haven't bought it. However, I read some reviews and it did well. They said the strategy based combat is quite addictive. I'll most likely try it soon.

I had the demo for Gladius month's ago and knew I would love it. Very niche, if you love turn based gameplay though it's a must.

i thought about putting it on my must-buy list for a later purchase when the game drops in price.
I got a demo disk with the game on it, played it for 40 minutes, and then decided not to buy it. I wouldn't have fun with it. The game is a mixed bag.

I picked it up in the Toys R Us Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal a couple of weeks back.
After I bought it (and before I opened it) I read several reviews about how slow the gameplay was. I considering taking it to Wal-Mart & trading it in for something else (since you can do it there without a receipt), but I decided to go with my gut instead of the reviews & opened it.
I love it. I haven't noticed any slow gameplay thus far, although I'm not too far into it. The sliding bar that you have to stop to determine your attack's strength really adds alot to the gameplay.
Until this year, I hadn't played any strategy games. After plowing through Advance Wars 1, Advance Wars 2, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and now working on Fire Emblem - this game is a great addition to the genre.

When I picked up the game "Dragster" I thought I was getting a game about a guy who dresses up as a lady and scores points by luring young men into a devious trap of lies and corruption. Instead it turned out to be some car racing game. Pffft.
Also when I bought Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball I expected a volleyball game. No complaints really but it isn't what I expected either.

Joe, that's nothing. You should have seen how pissed I was when I popped in my brand new copy of I Want My Mommy, ready for some hot Oedipal action and ended up lost in a shopping mall.

*grin* And the mom I saw yesterday at EB, getting smooth talked by her ~13 yr old son into buying GTA3, is going to have quite the shock should she ever watch her son play the "car game" that he said "all my friends have it, mom...its all about cars!"
My 9 yr old started laughing as he overheard this, and as we walked out...and said "Mommy, you know too much about video games, that's no fair, you'll never be stupid like that lady"...

If I knew absolutely nothing about Gladius, I would have bought it just because it has the exact same name as my favorite shmup series of all time, only bad Engrish turns the L into an R! LOL
I have to know at least one real good thing about a game before I purchase it. That by which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. I'm in a Shakespearean mood, don't ask.
