It took them forever and a day to release it, but it's been out since...last year, I think.

(fooey at editing my last post to add this in...)

It's basically a frontend with NES ROMs and an emulator embedded inside.

Castlevania 2 has undergone extensive fixes to spelling and grammar. I believe all the games have new copyright dates as well.

I'd rather get CastleVania Cronicles for playstation:

It has original and enhanced versions of the NES CastleVania games.

Actually, it's just got Akumajo Dracula for the Sharp x68000 along with an enhanced mode. Much better graphics than the 8-bit NES titles, and better graphics (arguably) than Dracula X on the SNES.

By the way, SFCfan...I mentioned this a while ago and didn't know if you answered. Your sig leads me to think that you're claiming the item shown in your sig was the prototype PlayStation--you know that it is the BS-X Satellaview and quite a different beast, right?

Actually I think the graphics on Dracula X are better, but Castlevaia Chronicles is much more fun. I actually beat it, but I've never been interested enough to play more than a level or 2 on Dracula X.

Oh, I wondered what Chronicles was. So it's basically remakes and originals of CV 1-3? Awesome. Symphony of the Night arrived in the mail today (about friggin time, I ordered it a month ago).

NO. it is just ONE game that was never released outside of japan. it is a game for the sharp x68000 or something. there are a few similarities between it and the first castlevania for nes, but there are many more differences than similarities. the game is really good tho, i like it alot more than castlevania IV...but 99% people would disagree with me.

Dracula X, not the PC-Engine version, but the SNES version? I think some parts of it are superb--a lot of backgrounds and such in it weren't reused elsewhere--but x68000's graphics are more consistently good.

Heh. You know, I wonder why the 1989 PC ports of Contra, Super C, and Castlevania are constantly overlooked. They've been available at Underdogs for some time.

I don't know about the Contra games, but the Castlevania one was sub-par.

As for that game collection, I did a review on it several months back:

There were ports of Contra and Super C? I know CV was ported to all sorts of systems (C64 and Amiga, PC, and a couple others) but I've never heard of Contra being ported. Have any handy links? (Kurt Kalata doesn't have it listed on his site.)

Saw it, almost bought it, then put it back.

I figured I'd rather play the actual NES carts. They're no different AFAIK.

Don't have an NES? A good deal, says I.

Yeah they are, but it's small stuff like spelling/grammar fixes in Castlevania 2, and the password system (only in CV2 and CV3 I believe) were changed to no vowels to you couldn't have a repeat of the infamous Metal Gear code.

Infamous Metal Gear code?

Do tell....never heard of this.

Those differences are pretty minute. I was speaking more on lines of a gameplay standpoint. But that information is good to know.

You rock! Thanks a ton (And to think that I rediscovered this topic looking for something else... @_@ )

A good PC conversion of Konami's hit arcade game of the same name, Contra is a Vietnam war platform game that features Rambo-style one-man commando against seeming the entire planet's enemy population, complete with colorful explosions, varied enemy units, and excellent level design.

Contra...Vietnam?

Now I've got to find a picture of the box...or the manual...I knew Konami's English manual writers are users of illicit substances but this takes the cake. Could just be the Underdogs reviewer straying a bit too far from his 1980s wargames, though :P

Vietnam? WTF? That guy's wrong. It's a Galuga Archipelago war platform game! ;)

I may get this... but I do own all five games on the NES already, so I don't know. :?
