Cardboard or just the red design sceme in general? They started using cardboard with Sonic & Knuckles.

I think around 93, or 94. I know Sonic 3 had a red box, but I'm pretty sure I saw them before that game came out.

I recall that SUB TERRANIA also had the red box. did that come out before sonic 3?

I was about to mention Sub Terrania too. I had a Sega Visions that covered both it and Sonic 3 so I assume they were released relatively at the same time, and it's probably safe to say that's when the red borders were implemented. I don't remember anything earlier than that.

Nope ;)
It's a plastic box, but it has the red border/spine that's in question. I'd also say that's about when they began with that style.
