A friend asked me this question and I had NO clue. By TRULY 3D, I mean the first game that was polygon based rather than sprite based. And I don't mean had polygons in it, I mean totally polygonal, no sprites. Games like Doom, Spy. Vs. Spy, and Wolfenstein don't count as they are all sprite based. All systems count, including arcade and PC for this one. Anyone know? I ws thinking possibly Hard Drivin' for the arcade, but I doubt it was the FIRST!
Hope someone knows!

I believe... Atari's "I, Robot". 1983.

Wasn't Battlezone in 3d before 1983? It was wireframe, but the rotations are done the same way.

I, Robot was the first 3D game done in the manner 3D games are done today, with pixel graphics. as for vector games.. I would think Red Baron or something.

Nope, I had it right. Red Baron came out in late 1980, Battlezone in early 80. Klov says that a lot of RB cabinets were just Battlezone cabinets redone for Red Baron, since the connections were all the same. It is correct that this was only vector graphics, though.
Here's a question - what was the first 3d game to shade (I'm assuming it was flat shaded and not Gourard, but I'm not sure what it is)

Wait...if it has pixel graphics, does it use POLYGONS? Or are those just sprites drawn to LOOK like polygons? Cause if that's the case, it's not the first true 3D game..... I know sprites can be drawn that resemble polygons, but which is I, Robot?

I, Robot is true polygons. Pull it up in Mame sometime and you'll see. Kinda neat looking, especially for it's particular vintage.
yes, I Robot was the first polygon 3D game according to the gaming magazines.
Star Raiders for Atari 8-bit was a 3D game and it was done in the 70's? P/M graphics?
