I thought I saw something about this posted a while back, but when I ran a search I couldn't find anything.

How exactly does one bring up the Snail Maze game on the SMS? Do all models have it? Thanks for your help.

I *think* it was something like hold up a + b when turning on the system

Turn on your Sega Master System without a cart in it.

When the SMS logo is appearing on the screen, hold the up direction on the D-pad, as well as both buttons, simultaneously.

You may have to try a couple of times to get it right (when I tried it, my timing was a bit off, so Hang-On still appeared). If that happens, try again, you'll eventually make it work.

I think that all early models of the SMS had it, but maybe not the later releases. Anyway, if Hang-On (with or without Safari Hunt) is your built-in game, you don't have to fret, the maze game is in there.

no, you can have both, unless Sega has changed it at one point.

I have the SMS with Hang-On built in, and I have no problem accessing the snail maze. My best friend has the SMS model with the built-in Hang-On and Safari Hunt, and she also has the snail maze.

I was thinking of something: is it possible that there'd be differences between the Canadian and American models? ie. that the snail maze may still have been included in the Canadian version but not the American one? After all, the SMS was distributed in Canada by Irwin, not Tonka.

The Safari Hunt/Hang On model I have does indeed have the Snail Maze game. I'm pretty sure it's the US model

YOUR ALL INSANE. As far as I know and have SEGA made 2 models of the red and black model 1 the one that accepts game cards.

#1 has Hang on you know this when you turn the power on without a game cart plugged in and the title screen appears

#2 When you get a message saying in effect if you want to play a game just insert a cart and enjoy. THIS ONE HAS SNAIL MAZE. At that screen press both fire buttons while holding up on the D pad.

If your looking for Snail Maze help just head on over to www.segamastersystem.com for maze screens they have them all posted.

I go home next weekend on the 22nd, and I'll double check on how to bring up snail maze, because I *know* it's still on the Safari Hunt/Hang On units. Ubersaurus & I both have one, and we've both gotten it to come up. In fact, a few months ago I had two SMS (one that had SH/HO and one that didn't) I wanted Snail Maze, since I had the cart for the other games but wasn't sure which system to keep. After I found out that SM was still on both SMS, deciding which one to keep wasn't that hard.

I'm pretty sure you had to hold down ^ & both buttons when you powered on the system (I think I had to have someone turn it on for me)

-or-

As soon as you see the 'Sega' symbol, hold down those buttons.

Anyhow, here's what I started on it:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13193&highlight=sms

Confirms that it is indeed on there, three people can't be wrong, can they?

I want to believe you, Achika, truly, but I've tried holding up+1+2 when turning the system on, when the Sega logo appears, and even when the Hang-on/Safari Hunt menu comes up, and no Snail Maze. It just brings up Hang-on. Except when I do it while turning the system on, then it does nothing.

If I recall right the SMS had quite a few BIOS revisions. Some have the maze, some simply don't.

I think the problem is that no FAQs has yet determined on a ultimate basis which models (and revisions) of the SMS has the snail maze built-in or not.

And remember: it takes perfect timing to make it come up. I know that if I wanna make it appear, I usually have to try 3-4 times because my timing is a bit off.

Anyway, I sent an email to Sega of America asking them which exact models and revs of the SMS had the maze game. Hopefully, I'll get an answer within the next couple of days, and we'll be settled on that question once and for all. (And when I get the answer, I suggest that Joe adds this info in some section of the DP website)

Y'know, the SMS BIOS that is included with the MEKA emulator allows you to access the Snail Maze. There are even instructions in the readme. (You can also watch the Space Harrier thing in the Japanese BIOS.)

You can do it in MEKA, and MEKA also supports all the BIOS variations, if you can find them.
