Most intriguing. Note that the red-armored knight in the Seiken Densetsu ad looks a lot like Akira Toriyama's warrior characters from the early Dragon Warrior games.
And it's interesting that Seiken Densetsu 2 (aka Secret of Mana) made a similar journey from one format to another, as it was originally planned as a CD game. Or so I've heard . . .

Very interesting! Never knew any of this before. Thanks for the info.
For additional information, a remake of Seiken Densetsu is coming out in the States next month for the GBA, renamed to Sword of Mana. That means everyone who missed the game when it was released as Final Fantasy Adventure for the GB back in 1991 and the re-release by Sunsoft about five years later can finally check out this great game.
It's very true about Square being a small company back in those days. Their first games were for the MSX computer when the company opened in 1985. Only the success of their last ditch effort in 'Final' Fantasy kept them afloat.

<shrug> At some point, someone in square was thinking about releasing a fourth Final Fantasy for the NES, they never made any code, it's a mock screenshot, and it never got past the "hey we should do this" stage.
I'm sure every videogame franchise ever has had the same thing happen, I was hoping for a partial game or something ;)

True. That's really not much different from the FF tech demo on N64 that eventually morphed itself into FFVII on PSX.

silent woof: Something that perhaps didn't come across clearly for you in the article is that there have been rumors for YEARS of Japanese collectors owning prototypes of both of these games. Here, for the first time, is the truth.

Very intresting. I knew about there was going to be another FF made for Famicom, but I thought they worked on it some and just canceled it. Didn't know that it was never made.
As for SD on the FDS, I had no clue about that.

Most interesting indeed.
I dream of someday attempting to translate the games Square released for the Bandai Satellaview, namely Treasure Conflix (a Mode 7 shooter that presently only runs under SNEeSe), Kobiara: Love is Balance (a dating/board game), and Dynami Tracer (some sort of adventure game).
None of them seem to be connected to Square's other games, although I think that's Gaspar from Chrono Trigger who offers advice in Kobiara.

Sorry Purple toe, never heard of it before, so wasn't aware of claims to people owning proto's for them. ;)

While rumors abound of former Squaresoft employees owning prototypes of this game as well as Final Fantasy IV, Moriyama again states that no real progress was ever made.
I guess this paragraph can be overlooked easily enough. Sorry for not making it clearer.

Very interesting but what I am more interested is how you find these japanese sites with the print ads on them.

W00t for the Lost Levels!
I've been wondering about the existance of a FFIV proto ever since I read about the possible existance on a wanted protos list.
Thanks for this cool story.
Just out of my curiousity, but where do you guys find the information?
