View Full Version : Game Crazy = Game Stupid

As a video-retail-"drone" myself, you won't usually hear me gripe about mega-game-corporation policies, because they are generally "ok" from my POV, although there are some that I disagree with and morally don't like, but that's for another thread.

So today was my first day at Game Crazy (usually attached to Hollywood Videos?) and I stopped at two of them. One about 1/2 hour from my college while hanging out with ubersaurus and the other that's about 10 minutes from my college. From the first I grab 6 DC games that I needed and I go to the counter and get ready to pay, but I notice a sign that says "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" I think "cool! I might start to like this place, the selection is decent, prices are fair." So I inquire about it, since the sign only said equal or lesser value and that they had to be GCN, Xbox, etc., nothing about memberships, so I figured it was like the Gamestop sale. The girl says you have to have the GVP membership (I found a flyer, $20/ year. OUCH!) Luckily uber had his, so I did get the B2G1. So the girl rings up the games, has us pay, THEN gets the games. One is resurfaced, two have the Hollywood Video stickers on them. Fine, that is fine, I can swap them for others where I work. I check to make sure they are all there, ok and we leave. No return policy on the counter, by the registers...posted anywhere that I could see. I did find one on the reciept, and I quote, "Returns and Warranty - Reciept Required for all returns. Used - 90 day replacement for damage excluding normal wear and tear, on all used products. New - 7 days from purchase, UNOPENED product refunded for cash. Defective product exchanged for same."

I start looking around on the internet for more Game Crazy stores and find one that is a few minutes from my campus. I want to go check for more DC deals and I figure, I'll put on the "cute, stupid-flirty girl" act and see if I can swap the game doctored discs and the discs with hollywood video stickers out for some that don't have the "imperfections". Well, it would have been fine if they had them, but I've obviously started this thread because I had something bad to say and here it is:

You can apparently only return things that you purchased, to the store where you purchased them from.

Thanks for not telling me that, and thanks for NOT printing it on the reciept.

I checked the Tokyo XTreme Racing disc, made sure it was in there, saw the Game Doctor marks ( ) before I left the store. I failed to notice that it was Tokyo Xtreme 2 in the case. So I suppose that part is my fault. I went to the store, and when I was looking at the closer GC's Tokyo Xtreme Racer I was trying to figure out why the one in my hand and the one they had looked different, but the font was similar. Oh yeah, because the employee put the wrong game in the case from the first store. So the guy called over there, and the store where I bought it from said they had no more in stock, I had gotten the last one. He said if I wanted a refund, I would have to drive all the way back to that store, get the refund, and come back to the closer store and buy the game, because he couldn't take it back. The only thing I could do is trade in TXR2 and re-buy TXR.

"Well, if it's your stores fuck-up, how come I have to be reprimanded for it"

"That's just the way it is. Our computers aren't linked so I can't take stuff back from other stores. You have to go back to that store and get a refund"

"But it says nothing about returning it to the same store on the reciept, only that I have 90 days."

"Sorry, I can't. You'll have to go back to the other store."

"Well, do you have a corporate office or anyone higher up that I can talk to about this?"

"You'll have to call that stores manager. I don't know of any corporate office. No one has told me of one, I'm the shift manager, not the store manager."

:frustrated:

Finally I traded in the TXR2 and bought the damn TXR that I needed for only a $1 extra, figured it would be cheaper than driving an hour to the other store and back to return it, go to the new store and buying TXR. Luckily I got to keep the case & instructions for TXR.

I've only bought from Game Crazy once, buying some NES games for my dad, but it was a good experience. I have a couple of friends who really like the place.

But that is pretty stupid that you can only return something to the store you bought it from. How long have Game Crazy stores been around? I've only seen one around here, and only since last summer. Maybe they're a relatively new franchise, and maybe they'll change that policy once they get their stuff all together.

Their website said they've been around since 1995, but we really didn't have any Hollywood Videos in my area until like 2000 anyhow, so GC is a relatively new addition for us here too. You'd just think in 5 years they could get the return policy hammered out.

there is a game crazy in my area in oregon. It is horrible with the game returns. Not to mention they throw all of the instruction books away for ps1 and dc games and still sell them as if they were complete. game crazy = my ass on wheels. My advice... don't go to game crazy.

SOrry to hear you had that much hassle.

BTW, just how DOES one put on the 'cute, stupid flirty-girl' act anyway? :)

Nothing wrong with a Game Doctor -- used them myself. Just I would never try to sell or trade a game I used it on! ;)

My thoughts are @ the end of the "Game Trading Shop" post from the end of last month. Guess no one saw it; no one else replied to it...

www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=200484&highlight=#200484

To be fair, on a return trip they actually had many more loose Genny games than I thought. This time I made the clerk show me the SNES games behind the counter; he did it grudgingly, as "no one wants to see them." The moment he set them down, another customer came over to check em out too, & I gave the clerk a "look".

He also said they hold weekend tournaments for club members, mostly new games, but he's working to get some classic games going.

The last time I was in Hollywood video here, I wanted to rent a couple of PSX games. When I took them to the front counter, I was told that I would have to give them a credit card. I was fine with that -- I figured in case I didn't return the games, they would charge me, right?

Wrong, they told me they were going to go ahead and put a charge (I can't remember but it seems like it was $25 per game) on my credit card, and then if I brought them back in time they would cancel the charge.

Don't know if that's still the policy -- never been back.

Flack - Game Crazy is a shop (kinda like Game Stop & EB) but they are all put into Hollywood Videos since they are owned by the same company. Usually rental places require a CC for if you don't bring the games back, but initially putting the $25 charge on there is BS.

RJ~ Yup, I saw your post on the last one. Totally slipped my mind that someone had mentioned it, since I'm new to the GC stores.

That is plain awful.

I also think that it's inexcusable that a chain of any size can get away with not having its computers linked into some sort of system. A way to save money? Hah.

One is resurfaced, two have the Hollywood Video stickers on them. Fine, that is fine, I can swap them for others where I work.

Is that a legal Funco/GameStop policy? That doesn't exactly seem fair that someone shopping at Gamestop should get a messed up looking disc just because a GS employee wasn't happy with something they bought at a totally unrelated store.

*shrugs* It seems different store to store. Some buy back the game doctored discs, some don't. I had a manager that would do it before, and even though the disc worked, he sent it to corporate to get professionally resurfaced. If not, I have no problem trading it in, rebuying the other one. My main concern was the case & instructions for all of them since it seems more and more are coming back as loose discs.

In any case, I sent a email to Game Crazy's corporate office explaining my displeasure in the return policy not being posted in it's entirety and asking for a complete copy of it. Or at the very least what it did was show that employees were possibly making up rules on the fly.

Soulblazer: Smile a lot, try to "act cute & innocent", "oops, I didn't realize I had this one...can I bring it back? I just want something I don't have..." tee hee. I'm going for a complete DC collection, scratches I can handle, but discs that have the daisy petal mark I can't stand.

Game Crazy has been crappy as long as I remember them being around. They (and Hollywood Video) are based out of Oregon, and they test marketed Game Crazy in Salem and Portland in 1996-1997. In fact, I remember the first ones going in. So I was going to them back in college. What they used to do was take in games in trade and then keep ONE box for display purposes. I asked if I could buy the games complete there (we had two in Salem) and they told me "We throw out all the boxes and manuals, and if we sell you the box we have on display, no one will know we have the game. So no."

They've always been that way. I ended up not going there to buy anything after my first year or so's experience with them. I was really unimpressed. Back then, their prices were going rate, whether the game was complete or loose. It was weird...drove me nuts. I remember being relieved that at least Babbages and EB weren't like that. Serves me right I guess! *sigh*

We need to open a chain of DP Express game stores! :D

It's quite possibly more idiotic then when EB forgot to put my Mars Matrix game in the case when I bought it, because they at least still had the game. Apparently the dumb broad at the GC over here can't read, because it clearly said on the game disc that it was the sequel. One very large 2, smackdab on the label. It doesn't take a genius to read that. This whole thing implies someone else bought Tokyo Xtreme Racing 2 and ended up getting the first disc.

My cousin is the manager of that store though-I'm gonna complain to her about this.

all i can say is the 2 by me keep every box for nes/snes/genny and whatnot when they get them. yeah they have a ton more unboxed games, and if you want a certain game from the cse(there the nes games are) they will check the puter before taking it out and go in the back and bring the same/other game out without stickers on it, and if it has a box ask if you want the box as well.

Also they will let you browse the back if you ask to see what they may have boxed instead of asking about title after title.

More than i can say for the others.

Dag yo. Game Crazy is a hit-or-miss place depending on location. I live by 2 of 'em and they're polar opposites of eachother.

One location, I call them "Got any used Gamecubes? Yes" I get there half an hour later after calling, and in his best fake suprised voice he goes "Ohh, I THOUGHT we had a used Gamecube in..." I went to that same location another time (I'm a slow learner I guess) with a PS2 and an SNES to trade in. They rejected both of them. I went to the other location and I traded them in there with no problems. ^^

Now on to the other, good location. I bought a top-loading NES there for 40 bucks. Bought a membership there and it's well worth it (I have gotten crazy amounts of $10 PS2 games with that....really good titles, too, like GTA3, VF4 Evolution, and Hot Shots Golf 3) I bought a Dreamcast and a handful of games from them and couldn't get any of them to work, so I went back the next day and got a full refund on everything, including the games. So yeh, that place treats me just fine.

I find that most game stores' quality depends on location.

Around here, EB is horrible and Gamestip/Funco Land are usually great. But I hear just the opposite from folks in other parts of the country all the time. Looks like the same is true of Game Crazy.

I will say this for the Lincoln Park location-they've been pretty good to me except for this incident. Granted, all i've ever bought off em have been cartridges. The time I bought Puzzle Fighter there and it didn't work though, they took it back without any problems. I can understand you not being willing to do that (its a 20 minute drive from where you're at, compared to 5-6 minutes from me), but its still a dumb mistake.

I'm not going to argue the dysfunctionality of the game crazy system though-not being linked up to other stores is kinda stupid. Kinda really stupid.

I don't like Game Crazy because they lock up their dumpsters. I hate jumping fences. I saw the really cool Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire display that lights up that I know they are going to throw away.

Fine, that is fine, I can swap them for others where I work.

Wait, do you really do this? If you buy a game that looks like it's in crappy condition, you'll take it into work, swap it out with a better condition one, and sell the crappy one to customers? Erm, sorry, but I don't think I'd wanna shop at YOUR store

I *may* have done it once. If so, the manager took anything that anyone brought in to trade, return, etc. and put it in the defect pile to be fixed by corporate. The only other thing that I can remember is getting a game resurfaced with the GD and putting it on eBay, fully telling the bidders that it was resurfaced that way.

 At any rate, management at the new store makes me take back and sell items that look much worse than something that's been resurfaced by a GD.

That sucks for you Achika. My GC is pretty good, but i only buy carts from them. Gamestop is better than them in Cd's and the like, because i have never seen a Gamedoctored disc as long as i have been there.
My suggestion is to ask the clerk to see the disc before you buy it.

She did-after they got rang up. Didn't catch the wrong disc thing though-concentrating too much on disc condition, I guess.

I've been to the Game Crazy in question a few times and haven't been impressed. I've been told there is one in Woodhaven that is quite good but I've yet to check that one out.

My opinion on the big chains, Game Stop, EB Games, Game Crazy etc... is that they are ALL hit or miss. Store policies aside some suck, some are great and this will change when the individual stores turn over employees or management.

In my immediate area I've got 1 Game Crazy, 2 EB Games and 7 Game Stops. I've walked away from each pissed off about a store policy or poor customer service or dissapointed by the selection but I've also come away from each with a great score too.

I've got a feel for which ones are going to be a better experience than others and I visit those more often. I do still visit THEM all because you never know what you might find.

All I can say about GC is that they are the only majoor chain that I know of that still deals in Game Gear and Saturn...
