I recently got into an argument with some moron who kept saying that "the Dreamcast is a bad system because it easily available, no one wants it and none of the games are ever going to be worth anything".
This idiot then continued to ramble on about how he owns "15 different systems with about 2 dozen games for each one". (He got really pissed at me when I told him I owned about 28+ different systems along with 900+ games)
He kept calling himself a 'collector' but he didn't even know what an "Intellivision" or "Commodore 64" was.
I loathe these ungrateful, younger generation gamers who think they know it all.
When he couldn't keep up with the argument, he started insulting me in the same fashion an immature child would:
He told me that I don't have a 'life'
That I fantasize about "The Tomb Raider" (lol-Who hasn't?)
and that I'm a 'big loser' for spending so much time with games and knowing so much about them.
:hmm:
Geez.... Kids today, huh? Such hypocrites. lol

Well not everyone is as "smart" as us. I can understand not knowing about certain systems, we all have to start somewhere , still 15 different systems aint that bad of a collection.
Also the only Tomb Raider I fantasize about is Jolie, not some pixalated whore.
As for the childish comments, yeah then the person is an ass.
Damn kids today!

I hate my generation. I can't blame any of you for also hating it. 7/8 of my classmates are assholes. I bet no one's ever heard of Gradius where I live. Not too many Rush fans in my local area... everyone lost respect for Star Wars because of the new episodes, but I liked Episode 1 and I loved Episode 2. I'm so different. I can't say that I'm better than everyone else, but I love the past. Screw the future. The present can kiss my ass.
Damn kids today, indeed. I'm one of them. I don't wanna be... I don't wanna be me. I don't wanna be me... anymore.

I hate non-logical thought. There are lots of good systems that were easily available. Obviously, people DO still want it because people still own them. I still want mine, so that negates "no one". As far as the games not ever being worth anything, some of the games are already going up on price.
How do you own fifteen consoles and not know what an Intellivision is?

The DC has tons of great games and will have the lowest install base of the Next Gen systems. You would think this would be reflected in the production of a good percentage of games. The only place I ever see DC games are at EB, Microplay and one particular pawn shop.
And if a kid ever started calling me a loser or saying I didn't have a life while in a video game store. Well, I would have taught him some respect.

Now when somebody goes on a tangent like that when I'm face-to-face with them I don't usually try to push too many points. Maybe I'll say one or two things to try and provide a counterexample, but getting into an argument over whatever system isn't something I do because I value my real life friendships (or at least being on speaking terms).
I can say that being silly isn't just confined to kids. At that Goodwill I bought those (rather lousy) NES games and asked if they got more stuff in often...yeah, yeah they did. For whatever reason one of the women there said "Nintendo...the only games worth playing" but I was already smiling (other woman said, "hmm...we get Genesis, Sega Genesis..." and ran out of consoles to mention), but it wasn't a mean smile. Instead of being angry, I just stand there and smile because I find humor in these things.
So that kid? Well, I can't say that I was the greatest DreamCast fan myself when it was alive, so why should I expect everybody to have nice things to say about it? That's what I think.

This guy was probably just an arrogant person with a poor self-image and low self-esteem. No reason to try to stick it back to him.
These people are everywhere, and seem to be more common in the "nerdy" hobbies like gaming/computing/fnord.
Don't sweat it. :D

I've given up trying to talk to people like that. They can't be reasoned with, and usually, they just want to be "the best" at that particular moment. I remember back in Oregon in the local game shop, there was this kid I was talking with who claimed to be the biggest RPG collector in the area, and had all the SNES and PS1 RPGs, etc etc. He didn't mention anything by Sega though. So I asked him "What about Sega RPGs? The Shining games? Panzer Dragoon Saga? Skies of Arcadia?" He gets all pissed off and tells me that Sega doesn't count because everything that Sega makes sucks. This is after I explained to him that I had not only all the RPGs he has, but all the ones he's in there looking for too :D
What really cracks me up is when they call you a liar. Like anyone would BOTHER to lie about games they don't own? I just can't help but burst out laughing when some clerk or kid I'm tlaking games with calls me a liar when I tell them how many games (and what games) I've got. It makes bragging so worth it just to see em get all offended!
I also ended up talking to another collector who invited me over to buy some stuff from him. He was "getting out of collecting" at the time. So I figured I'd go look...he was an RPG collector..maybe there was some money in it. He always talked like he had this stunning collection after all. So I get there, and he has MAYBE 35 games! He'd always sounded like he had as many as I did (I think I was at around 350 or so then) and he just has enough to mostly cover this counter they were on. Blew me away.
I guess people just like to sound like they're the best. For me, I never lie about what I have though. Apparently some people do. Weird. And they assume that you're lying when you tell em the truth! Anymore, I try to avoid telling people quite how MANY games I have....because of the sheer amount of money involved. I don't trust people anymore :D

Man you find this crap all over GameFAQs. I can't recall how many times I participated in a collection thread just to get railed by some jerk face!
My favorites are:
You're lying.
Get a life.
They must be backups.
80% of what you have is trash (after explaining why I have the games I do).
Must have rich parents (man I wish!).
How do you play them all?
You have many duplicate games (same title for US & JPN).
I spend my money on my girlfriend.
Many more, most of those twats are just mad they don't have what others do. I bet if they spent the money on games instead of weed, they'd understand.

I got tired of his ass one day and threw the Tips & Tricks magazine at him(the one I'm in)..
I told him to look in the Collectors Corner/Room of Doom..he knows my name and he had nothing else to say after he saw the pics..his mouth was sort of in that,but,but,motion..then he just walked away..(He won't say a thing to me now).. :D

Last year, in my media arts course, there was a group of dumb-asses that tried to convince to buy an XBOX (I was gonna get a PS1). They say things like "the games are so cool", "the graphics are fuckin' wicked" "Halo rules!", etc. So I ask them: Name 20 good games for XBOX. They stopped after 3. And then added "but you gotta play Halo man!" I argued with them on how 3 good games aren't worth shit for a $300+ system. If I pay that much, there at least has to be more than 3 good games (matter of fact: The games they named were Halo, Project Gotham Racing and Wreckless. I asked them about Mechassault and they had no idea what it was). Then they said, "Yeah, well the Playstation graphics suck." "Yeah, the games are terrible." "Yeah, There's no way there's 20 good games for it." I listed my 20 games to them: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile (sp?), Street Fighter Alpha 3, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Gran Turismo 2.
Then there was the onslaught of:
"You suck!" "You're a fucking fag" "Fuck off" etc.
People like this piss me off. I want to beat them with spiked bat. :devilish:
But I think it's people's interest in rap that gets me more pissed off. I'll go insane if I talk about it.

There are a huge plethora of idiots that I want dead. I'm just good at swallowing my rage. But I know I could kill them if I wanted to. I could probably do it bare-handed to boot.
Easy there Columbine... O_O

Since I've gotten "old" (thirty-something), I've found it much easier to avoid gamer assholes by being the "old guy with the rugrats." Nobody brags to me because no one seems to feel the need to impress a guy who spends most of his time hanging out with a 5 and a 2 year old.
Actually, I'm more likely to brag to them when I tell them my 5 year old is learning to type by playing "Typing of the Dead."

Thanks for reading my rant everyone.
I'm glad to see that I'm not alone. :)
As for fantisizing about Lara Croft, I do; I fantisize about the actress who plays her in the movies. Angelina Jolie sure is real purdy.

all u see is protest saying video games cause kids to be violent they learn to kill
Well, I know that sometimes I feel pretty angry after a round of CounterStrike (fun game, so sue me :P --haven't had the time to play in a couple months though). Yes, it does seem to be an outlet for some kids. I do think it can also serve to escalate violent tendencies, but those kids should have somebody looking out for them. Should...
Anyway, I can't believe that nobody has fond memories of "the guy with all the crazy game stories" that you used to believe. I knew a guy like that, and darn it all I still wish some of the things he said turned out to be true. Nothing but pleasant memories here.

As a parent of a 4 and a 2 year old I would not consider it a positive to hear someone was letting their 5 year old play M rated games. I would consider it a bad thing. :hmm:
On topic, I just don't talk about my collection. My wife knows about it but not many details. I don't think anyone else I know knows the extent of it other than SoulBlazer, who is also the only person outside of my house who has actually seen it. People tend to ask me questions and I answer them without elaboration. I think what you folks are experiencing is basically what I try to avoid since I'm not going around seeking the opinions of others. They can say what they want and it will be of no interest to me 95% of the time...

Then, given how you feel about other people's opinions, I would think you'd pay less attention to the ESRB ratings, which are only the opinions of others, and decide for yourself what is appropriate or not for your children. :hmm:
Sorry, but I need to resolve this unexpected tangent to the topic . . . moderators do whatever you need to . . .
Actually, I exagerrated/lied, he hasn't played "Typing of the Dead," yet. It's on order from eBay and he'll play it next week unless I have a real problem with it. Doubtful I will, because it's ALWAYS okay to kill Zombies, especially if you're learning to type. I *will* brag about it, though, especially if he does end up learning to type.
I DO let him play Grand Theft Auto III. Most often he drives the firetruck and the ambulance, but occasionally he drives one of the "fast cars." He's learned to stop at red lights; to be careful when approaching a curve at high speed; and when the car does flip over, get out and run away quickly before it explodes. Don't tell me these aren't positive, useful things to learn in life. LOL
In my opinion, it's not about teaching him which games to play and which games not to play because someone he and I have never met has decided it's bad for him. It's about encouraging the correct behavior when he plays *any* game. Just because a game is rated "M" doesn't mean he can't be educated to understand what is going on and why what is happening in the game is appropriate or inappropriate. I would much rather him play these games with me around than learn about them himself when he's over a friend's house and an older sibling takes out an "M" game. He won't be shocked by the violence and he'll have already learned that there are behaviors in games that are not approprate in real life.
I do understand how you feel and I respect that you do whatever you do for your children because you feel it is in their best interest. So do I, though I'll admit I've found very few parents who agree with me on this particular issue. Regardless, they and every teacher he's had, have all told me I have one of the sweetest, most gentle, positive boys they've ever met, which, because I value the opinion of my friends and the people who teach my children, means to me that I must be doing *something* right.

Well, that's useful. You completely backtracked.
BTW, it's good that you play WITH him, but GTA III is probably too easy to find the bad stuff. There are hundreds of games that could teach him the same thing without the possibility of hookers, guns, and everything else.
That said, I let my kids play P.O.W. and regret it now. My two year old got so angry at the bad guys that he stopped playing and started pounding on the screen. My 4 year old understands it more but now says things like "I don't like it when people stab me". I should not have let them play that game, but they saw it in my basement, and how can you explain to a little kid that there's a freakin' arcade game in their house but they can't play it?
As for Typing of the Dead, I would advise against it. I can't see anything positive coming out of a 5 year old blowing the heads off of dead bodies. Typing? Surely he can learn it in a more positive way...
(just in case it needs saying, he's your child and you do what you feel is right, since it sounds like he's turning out well)

Everyones opinion on what to let their children do and say are going to be vastly different.
But I will say this. What mezrabad is doing is the only correct way of raising children. And no I'm not talking about letting them play Mature games. I'm talking about sitting down with your children as they play games, read books , watch TV , etc. That way you can explain what they are seeing or reading. This way you can teach them the proper way to view the matter and help them to grow up to be responsible , thinking adults.
I personally wouldn't let my 5 and 7 year old play GTA III but I have let them play Halo with me. I explained thats its only pretend killing of Aliens and also when a couple of innappropriate words were used I got to explain why those words were bad and they shouldn't use them.
If all parents would take time to do this with their children I think they might grow up adjusted properly to the society we live in.

Thanks for your encouragement, jonjandran! :)
Well, we got "Typing of the Dead" today. I think it's rated "M" because it's too darn hard for kids to keep up with the typing! :embarrassed: So, I was wrong and my brag was an empty one, despite my best intentions. :(
Maybe I'll find him something easier with similar themes, like "Mario Teaches Typing" or "Gun Survivor: Biohazard." LOL
