8.

The author's knowledge of the game shines through. The only thing between this and a 10 is my English degree. That being said, I really enjoyed this one. The writer's enthusiasm carried over to me. Perfect.

What's a "Shmup"? I know what one is...but does Joe from Albany? I think that with an undefined term like shmup...one that's not really commonplace yet (though it is getting there) you lose a lot of people right off the bat. The game-play is intense, but what's it like? What's a Dodonpachi? There's once again too much in-knowledge here for the average gamer and not enough reviewing. Compare all you want, but it doesn't make a review. 6/10.

Yes, it would have helped to substitute "shooter" for "shmup" here, but most of the comparisons are fair game. Readers won't require much knowledge to infer, for example, that Dodonpachi is intense or that Gradius has power-ups which follow your fighter around.

Decent review, if limited in its possible audience. 7 out of 10.

10/10! 10/10! 10/10!!! :wired:

Nah, I'm joking. This one's mine, but I'll give it a fair review. To be honest, I just wrote it for the MAME club. I just submitted it for the hell of it. Looking at my own work from an angle, my score is...

7/10

Looking back on it, I could have been more descriptive with a few more aspects, especially the sound. Also, like Max said, not everyone knows what a shmup is. But then again, I didn't write this review with the AR contest in mind. I originally wrote it for the MAME club. If I had known that I would submit this for a contest, I would have called BB a shooter or a shoot-em-up. If there's another AR contest in the future, I'll write a review specifically for it. But I am quite proud of my own work. After all, this is the first review that I've written for any website. :D

Not bad at all, but it'd be nice if it didn't state things a shoot-em-up enthusiast wouldn't know-- like what a SHMUP or OPTION are .. it also describes options as being like those in Gradius .. this requires knowledge many readers wouldn't know. Having more than one screenshot would be nice, as would a little more detail.

Score: 6/10

Had the screenshots and everything else to make this review very good and enjoyable to read.

A very nice review, I do agree with what has been said about not defining new terms, but other than that, very nice!

Although, I do have to bring up one point...

The bosses churn out projectiles like Rush churns out great albums.

Now, I like Rush, and I pity the fool that doesn't, but they don't exactly "churn" out albums do they? Tupac, even though he's dead, churns out a double album every few months it seems though...what's up with that?

Oh what, the review? Yes, I like it.

The references here might be a little obscure to some people. I would also suggest describing the weapons in a little more detail, as they are frequently what really makes a SHMUP unique, I'd say. Aside from all that and the iffy grammar, not bad.

Not good to diss your own review, man ;)

I felt somewhat cheated by the review's shortness. No "but" this time, kid. That out of the way, what there is to read looks like pretty high quality stuff, despite there being a couple grammatical errors. Also, the following sentence just felt odd, instead of funny as it was intended to be:

Believe it or not, there are more bullets from the enemies than there are power-ups.

No point totals! What's going on with the lack of point totals? I want points!

While the review is short, the information that is there is informative. I would have liked to see a little more detail, especially in the parts where you say something could be better. Good overall though.

Meh. What can I say that no one else (even the author) hasn't said? It's a good, informative review but needs more elaboration overall. Nice screen grab.

Overall a pretty good review. Perhaps assumes the reader knows more than they might. Gives good detail, not too long, no lame humour. Still, lacking the "spark" that I'm looking for. Minus a point for missing the scoring.

Score: 7

I'll give this one a 7/10.

I'm SURE others have mentioned this, but there's a little too much "insider stuff" going on here that the casual gamer might not pick up on. Terms like "SHMUP" and "try to one-credit this" and "up to six options" aren't terms that just anyone is going to understand.

On the other hand, if you DO get the terms, and you HAVE played Gradius, this is a great review. I like the loose style, like your buddy describing the game to you, not some "writer". Good stuff, would have scored better with a little more layman's terms (or definition of the gamer terms used therein).
