Only the GC version was, if I recall.

That's STILL the version I'm going to get. 8-)

My GC needs all the loving that it can get. ;)

I'll be buying these... Possibly for myself, &/or maybe as Xmas gifts for other people... I think collections like these are good for more 'casual' retrogamers who don't want to deal with emus & roms.

I'm getting the PS2 version of Midway Arcade Treasures almost for sure (I'll have to see if it arrived at work or not), after seeing some reviews (this being Midway, I wanna make sure they didn't screw it up this time).

As for Intellivision Lives, I don't know. I already have Intellivision Lives! and Rocks! for the computer and I'm getting an Intelli 2 this weekend. It'll depend on whether my employer will carry it or not.

I think that it is funny that I own almost 3,000 games and I am drooling at owning both of these. Robotron using the Dual Shock is gonna rock! I too, just got an Intellivision II. I just hope that the Intv one isnt a pile of poop like the PS one version released years ago.

Here's a link to the IGN review:

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/440/440841p1.html

It says that the PS2 version is better than the Xbox version in some respects, although the XB version looks better and has Live support for score rankings.

I want to get it this week, but I have too many games here that are still unplayed.

Actually, I pre-ordered the Xbox bersion of Midway. Is it REALLY coming out this soon? X_x

I'll probably get a call on Wednesday. Damn. I was hoping to go to GS tomorrow, but it's far away that I don't wanna have to go BACK! Man!

I wish there had been a cool Freebie with it though. In leiu of a cool Freebie for Midway, the guy offered me a Spy Hunter 2 motorcycle. I took it. Still in packaging on my shelf. Wish I had gotten a Halo 2 Freebie when I pre-ordered that... LAST YEAR.

Ouch! Just saw 2 reviews for Midway Arcade Treasures... Gamespot gives it 6.4 and IGN is a bit more generous, giving it 7. Apparently, on the PS2 version, Smash TV's frame rate dips somewhat (that's all I need: a replay of my Smash TV experience on MAME). Also, the video interviews are all old stuff including interviews from Party Pak. So, if you already have that compilation, the interviews in MAT will be nothing new.

However, there was no mention on how Spy Hunter controls (I'm hoping for something akin to the Colecovision, but with more buttons). If anyone gets their hands on MAT, lemme know how Spy Hunter is.

I'd hate to return it without opening it right after buying it and wait two weeks for a trade-in so I can try that out and return it later if it sucks.

I, too, hope that Spy Hunter controls well. I didn't like the SH control in AGH: Midway Collection 2, although I never analyzed what the exact problem was.

As far as frame rate dips on Smash TV, was there any problem with that on Arcade Party Pak? I never noticed any frame rate problem myself, but I'm usually too frantic to be analytical when I'm playing Smash TV.

Delayed here too.

I called EB yesterday (the 18th) and they said they'd have the PS2 version of Midway Arcade Treasures in the next day (the 19th, which is today), so I went there. Well, guess what? They told me that they'd be getting it in TOMORROW (the 20th). Granted, I shoulda called today before I went, but geez, I don't think I'm wrong for assuming that the store employee knew what he was talking about when I called him. :) I ain't going back there, that's for sure. :)

Good news though: EBgames.com now has 10% off (coupon code AFF10) and free shipping. I ordered Midway Arcade Treasures (PS2) and Double Dragon Advance (GBA). I almost hate to wait a few more days, but I don't have the time or energy to go hunting for the game from shop to shop. These silly little delays have been ridiculous, so now I'm going to sit back and wait for the game to come to me. ;) Hey, it's cheaper and more convenient, so why not? :D

Is or isn't Moon Patrol included? Some reports say yes, others say no. Maybe it's unlockable?

And does this mean that Midway still has the North American rights to Moon Patrol (or not)? I say this cuz Moon Patrol was originally made by Irem and distributed in North America by Williams.

You might have to take this with a HUGE grain of salt, but there's a guy on the GameFAQs Midway Arcade Treasures PS2 board who claims to work for Midway, and for what it's worth, he broke the story a month ago about Moon Patrol being yanked from the game because, yes, Irem has the rights. Plus, a couple of people there who bought the game have confirmed that Moon Patrol isn't in.

Just picked up Midways Arcade Treasures an hour ago. And yes, no Moon Patrol. And only got this so I can play Joust, Stargate, Satans Hollow, Sinistar, Joust2 and Defender. I say its worth $20.00. The only gripe I have so far is the sounds in Defender Stargate go in and out at times. And when you use Inviso and shoot at the same time, the inviso doesnt seem to stay on that long. The version in Williams Arcade Classics is better.

But overall Im happy. Despite the bad rating the game got from Gamespot. By the way, what do they know anyway x_x

Glad to hear that you're liking it. My big question is this: Does Sinistar allow your ship to point more than eight directions using the analog stick? Sinistar on Arcade's Greatest Hits: The Williams Collection limited you to eight directions, while the arcade version had many more intermediate directions.

Time to revive this thread! I just got Midway Arcade Treasures today. (this is the first of many postings, as I'll add comments here as I play along the disk)

First thing, why the fuck didn't Midway update its texts on the disk?????? I'm currently reading about the history of Defender. It says, quote/unquote, "Presently Atari is developing an update to the game called Defender 2000 for their Jaguar home system". Umm, yeah. Someone oughta remind them that we're now in 2003 and that the Jaguar is long dead in terms of market and the Atari from then no longer exists. And that Midway released a remake of Defender after that. Unless Midway wants to forget about the Defender update? It was, after all, less successful than their update of Spy Hunter.

Another nitpick on my part: why aren't the control schemes explained in the manual? Are they so lazy that they couldn't make three versions of the manual illustrating the control scheme for the given console?

Third nitpick: I hate having to go back to the main menu to read the history/watch the set of videos for the next game in the list. That's kinda tedious and an extra step that was not needed.

So far, in terms of gameplay, the only game I've played is Smash TV, and it plays well (at least so far).

zmweasel

First thing, why the fuck didn't Midway update its texts on the disk??????

Because Treasures is the epitome of a quick-and-dirty compilation. Don't forget that Midway didn't even come up with the idea for it; Digital Eclipse approached them with the concept. The no-budget nature of Treasures also explains why the video clips are recycled from the earlier collections, and in the same wretched MPEG1 resolution.

Another nitpick on my part: why aren't the control schemes explained in the manual? Are they so lazy that they couldn't make three versions of the manual illustrating the control scheme for the given console?

There already are three versions of the manual, each one with a system-specific controller callout at the front. It's not laziness so much as cost-cutting; fewer pages = cheaper cost. This is a $20 release, after all.

Also, the games themselves usually do a fine job of explaining the controls via attract screens.

I understand that, and I do appreciate the budget title approach, especially when Nintendo charges so much for ports of their old games.

But without remaking completely the previous Williams anthology, they still could have updated the text, not necessarily rewriting it from scratch.

And I disagree about the control schemes not being in the manual. I don't feel like having to revert back to the start screen just to remember what does what in, say, Defender or Spy Hunter (obviously, that isn't an issue with simpler control games). Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Since I don't have the old Williams collection disk, I'll appreciate this one nevertheless, despite its faults. Hey, I also like the Namco Museum anthologies and Atari Anniversary, even though they're far from perfect and despite the fact that Atari Anniversary is basically the old Midway Greatest Hits: The Atari Collection carts from the SNES but with an interview with Bushnell.

zmweasel

But without remaking completely the previous Williams anthology, they still could have updated the text, not necessarily rewriting it from scratch.

I totally agree. It would've taken a few hours, at most, to update the text. I'm just assuming Treasures was such a rush-job that the programmers were more concerned about wedging the text into the front-end (in a wretched 2,900-point font) than checking it for chronological boo-boos.

Treasures ain't the only retro-collection guilty of flawed text; I noticed that the homebrew "manuals" in the (sweet-ass sweet) GBA version of Activision Anthology have a few no-longer-appropriate paragraphs. And has anyone else noticed the typos on several of the box covers?

So far, I've played the following games (in no particular order):

Defender
Bubbles
Robotron 2084
Spy Hunter
Smash TV
Root Beer Tapper

So far, the emulation is very good (although I didn't remember that the Spy Hunter car went so fast in high gear). I got my ass kicked pretty fast in those games, tho (I need to pratice more).

Defender (and I suppose, Stargate): Even though you can use the thrust/reverse buttons, you can also simply go left or right, just like the Atari 2600 port.

Bubbles: First time I've played this game ever. I suppose it was a trackball game originally? That's how it feels anyway. I wish the manual would be clearer on how to kill the enemies. Otherwise, cute, simple and fun. Could be a true pleasant addictive title once I grasp the gameplay a bit more.

Robotron 2084: Even though I'm quite the Eugene Jarvis fan, I haven't played Robotron that much in my life. Actually, the version I've played the most is the GBA Midway Greatest Hits port, which is NOT a reference whatsoever. Whew, the screen gets crowded really, really fast.

Spy Hunter: I guess that if I want simpler controls for this one, I'll have to find a copy of the ColecoVision port (which I've been looking for for months, incidentally). I forgot that you have to switch to low gear before entering the van.

Smash TV: I haven't seen the reported slowdown from the 2 other consoles, although I couldn't confirm that it was indeed fixed on the GCN. One thing's for sure: if slowdown there is, it's still tons smoother than running it on my MAME (I never could get it to run without choppy sound and video on MAME, despite my best efforts).

Root Beer Tapper: I wish it'd be the original beer Tapper, but I guess the old licence with Budweiser is long over. Besides, in today's society, it'd be enough to make the compilation go from a Teen rating to a Mature rating. The image seems smallish, maybe that's because it's meant to play from up close? Again, if I want an image that's better suited for playing on a TV, I'll have to switch to the Coleco port (which I do have).

Anyway, in general, so far, so good, especially where the game emulation is concerned. It's definitely not the horrid flop that was Midway Greatest Hits on the GBA, fortunately!!!

As I've mentioned in my comments about Tapper: the compilation is rated Teen, which surprised me, especially since there's no Mortal Kombat on the disk. I guess that the main culprit for the rating's gotta be Smash TV. Wasn't Smash TV somewhat controversal when it was first released?

Duncan
12-20-2003, 04:50 AM
I have the PS2 version (well, technically, my brother has it). And yes, Smash TV slows down pretty badly during one of the boss stages -- the twin snakes, which I'm sure take a lot of processing power. But, shit, this is the PS2 we're talking about. There's not really any excuse for that, considering that the old PSone Arcade Party Pak didn't have any slowdown. The rest of the game plays fine, though, so it doesn't bother me too much. It's just annoying that that wasn't fixed.

Anyway, Robotron is excellent. So is Rampart, but one could wish for a trackball to place the blocks more precisely. Marble Madness plays very well indeed. Haven't had a chance to try out either Spy Hunter or Roadblasters yet, but I don't expect any surprises. Tapper still rocks, just like always (though it was more fun in the arcades with the Budweiser joystick).

Paperboy, oddly, has control issues that I've never experienced with any other version of the game. Switching control modes doesn't help, as it just makes it even more unplayable. Too bad. But again, the PSone version on Williams Arcade Classics didn't have a problem...weird. Vindicators is also kinda tough to handle without the specialized joysticks of the arcade version (and damn, I loved that game in the arcade).

I do miss Gorf, though, and it might have been cool to see something like Gunfight -- the very first Midway video game -- in there as well. Are there copyright issues with those two?

Still worth the twenty bucks, methinks. It's worth it just for Defender and Joust alone, not to mention all the other great stuff. I just wish I'd gotten the GameCube version instead...all my compilation discs are on PSone or PS2, which means I don't play them as often.

Then again, now that I've got the LCD screen, I'll probably have to whip out Namco 1 and 3... :)

Thanks to the good folks at klov (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=B&game_id=7226), I now know how to play Bubbles properly.

Oh, and the control for the game was a joystick (still seems to me like it'd be a natural for a trackball... maybe that's because it was a Williams game, not an Atari one?).

I'll play more sometime today (I'm sick with a cold -- again! -- and must finish my Christmas shopping, but that won't take me the whole day, no?). We'll see whether being drugged up with sinus medication will improve my playing! :D And, of course, I'll add more comments as I go along.

I think that Gun Fight would have been too much of a pain to emulate... Besides, I think Midway would have been more likely to add Mortal Kombat to the set than Gun Fight...

I don't know if anyone checked their wal-marts, but I was able to pick up Intellivision Lives! for PS2 for $18.88 CDN which, with tax, is about $15 USD. A good deal IMHO. And it's pretty cool. The controls are good, the extra display modes are crap, and some of the games need 2 controllers to play.

One question I'm surprised no one's brought up...how vital is it to obtain Treasures if you have the arcade collections Midway previously made available for the original Playstation? Are there many games not available before? And how do they compare in quality? Do I really need Midway Arcade Treasures? Or should I simply just forget it and keep enjoying the PS1 collections I already have?

Some of the games, like Paperboy and 720, don't play properly on the PS2. So if you want to play all of them, you'll want to pick this up.

Duncan hit it on the head (and I posted it in another thread a while back), but the controls for all but the simplest of games were complicated and ruined the gameplay FOR NO REASON! Plus, the controller configurations only had a few choices, none of them good! WHY NOT just let me assign keys? Unless you are adept with doing two different things with your thumbs (akin to patting one's head/rubbing one's tummy at the same time) then forget it. It's not like Robotron, where one stick moves and the other shoots, it's games like Sprint, where one steers left/right and the other goes forward/backward. Can't I PLEASE use X for gas? NO, says Midway.

Really? I was just playing Super Sprint on the Xbox version of Arcade Treasures, and the "R" trigger is used for gas and the left thumb stick is used to steer. Plays like a dream. Sounds like the PS2 owners of MAC got a raw deal.

Hooray, I finally found the Gamecube version of Arcade Treasures. I knew there was a reason to wait for this version - full analog support in Sinistar! It plays beautifully. I'm impressed how well they got Marble Madness to control. The last time anyone did it right was in the NES version. Smash TV is a bit cumbersome with twin analog sticks, but it's no big loss, since I like the SNES version the best anyway. ;-)

Toobin' (Arcade Party Pak) wont work on PS2 either. I'm getting MAT for Sinistar, Toobin', & Vindicators (hasnt anyone tried it yet?). I already have versions of most games on there: Defender, Gauntlet, Joust, RoadBlasters, etc.

Hooray, I finally found the Gamecube version of Arcade Treasures. I knew there was a reason to wait for this version - full analog support in Sinistar! It plays beautifully. I'm impressed how well they got Marble Madness to control. The last time anyone did it right was in the NES version. Smash TV is a bit cumbersome with twin analog sticks, but it's no big loss, since I like the SNES version the best anyway. ;-)

Is it? I was told that it was the usual digital 8-way mapping to the analog stick in games that could actually use the analog control (such as Sinistar). If you are telling me the analog stick is used properly in such games and it isn't digital control, that will please a number of others I know, not just myself 8-)

Yeah, the Gamecube version is definitely real analog. Though Rampart is still a pain to control. But I guess it's a fair trade for having a version of Marble Madness with control good enough for me to finish the Ultimate Race. Road Blasters also handles the analog stick quite well. Paperboy seemed good, but I suck at the arcade version too much to tell for sure. ;-)

Yeah, Marble Madness controls great, especially when you consider that it was originally controlled by a trackball. I find that the GameCube thumb stick works very well for that.

Also, I played Smash TV a bit more thoroughly and made it through the Twin Snakes boss. I haven't noticed any particular slowdown whatsoever throughout the game, so that's great news for fans of the game. Maybe the PS2 slowdown is due to the console's hardware? Then again, weren't there reports of slowdown as well on the Xbox version? Maybe the people at Digital Eclipse finetuned the emulation on the GameCube, perhaps explaining why that version came out later than the other two.

So far, I'm quite satisfied with the anthology, and a great-working version of Smash TV with using both joysticks is quite worth the price alone (see my previous posting about my problems running the game with MAME).

Anyone else get the Xbox version of this game? Man, I'm really dig the option to upload your best scores onto Live so you can see how you compare with players from all over the world. It makes playing the games allot more interesting. I can't remember the last time I cared about getting high scores so much. Right now I'm #12 in the world on Klax...hope to break into the Top 10 tonight!

I have the game for PS2, and i am really enjoying it. Smash TV only has slowdown on the snakes, and in the very beginning where you enter the first arena, which doesnt matter.
Robotron is great period.
Joust is also great, but damn its harder than i remember.
I actually like how paperboy plays, and am getting good at it.
Vindicators is one of the only ones that i have never played before, and once you get used to the control, its great.

Does anyone want to do a high score contest on the boards? Just post the name of the game, and your high score, and we can compare. Ill start it off with Robotron.

all games? I suggest leaving out Smash TV and its infinite continue buy-in feature, especially since the buy-in doesn't reset the score.
