Sounds cool, and I can definitely use them somewhere - just not in THIS book. I will honor the offer of a DP Guide 7 and T-Shirt, though. If you're interested just stick to the guidelines and send them to me when you're ready.
Thanks!

Yes. Specifically it's a list of "contributors" that is always found on the colophon/copyright page at the front of the book.

Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and PlayStation sections have had pretty significant contributions so they're linked at the top of this thread as well. I've gotten some drips and drabs of Dreamcast, Jaguar, N64 and Pico too. No hurry but I'm *always* ready to receive.

I'm SHOCKED and HORRIFIED that you completly forgot about the NES!!!
Are you planning on just sticking to the scans I sent you for the last book??
Because if you need screen shots for the NES, I'd be more than happy to do it!

Oh well..
The book is called "Advance Edition". It's for the systems that came AFTER the ones in the original guide. If it's 1989 or later, it will be in this book (minus the very active systems: Xbox, PS2, GBA and GameCube).

Do the pictures have to be an exact screenshot, or can they focus on a neat or interesting detail?? Like the small Yu Suzuki logo on screen before Yu Suzuki gameworks vol. 1 starts??
OrTHIS (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/md_saturn_dc/detail?.dir=/Games&.dnm=SAT-SexyParodius-LVLbackground.jpg) detail from Sexy Parodius?? (btw: notice Alex' gawking? :) )

It's pretty important that the pictures have the game title in the file name. If you don't do it, I'll have to anyway!

That might be interesting - a few of these would be OK but covering as many games via screen shots is the project du jour so try to stick to that as as much as possible.
With the amount of help I've gotten here (thank you ALL very much, you'll be taken care of!) I'll likely extend this to other graphical areas of the book as well, like cover scans and memorabilia photos - that's all down the road but if you're just itching to help out but are better with a camera than an F12 key :) just e-mail me.
NOTE: I've mentioned this before but a reminder that the book will use a larger palette of screens than you see online - for space and efficiency purposes most of the games in the online galleries here will use no more than two of the screen shots.
NOTE: Devilman sent in a significant number of CD32 scans so I've linked his work to the gallery page and to the initial post in this thread. Or you can just jump right to it, here: http://www.digitpress.com/dpsightz/cd32/

Unfortunately, my 3DO crapped out on me, so I won't be able to get as nearly as many as I thought I would.
I've got quite a few PSX games that aren't listed though so I'll take them anyway. If you don't want to use them, that's fine too.
I've also just got my scanner back up and running, and cover shots would be a snap. What size are you looking for those to be?

Argh, what's this...JPEGs? The screenshots don't look that hot as JPEGs. I'd be happy to take them as BMPs and convert 'em to GIFs. Look better and some (especially GameBoy Color and earlier) would be smaller in size. Wouldn't take me long at all.

I don't understand how images with less color data look better than images with more... Maybe its a matter of preference, but I think jpg looks far superior to gif. Smoother color transitions, no speckling, etc etc..
Lady Jaye
12-03-2003, 11:08 AM
Hmm, Joe did say JPEG as one of the acceptable formats. If he had any problem with the format I chose or the size of my pics (Game Boy Color), he would have let me know by now. Besides, the JPEGs are at the highest quality possible (for printing purposes), which explains their size.
Ed Oscuro
12-03-2003, 11:11 AM
Take another look at those images. Lots of specs, especially around lines, introduced specifically from the JPEG compression. Less colors? No, and using JPEG is going to introduce artifacts and other "goodies" that make the image harder to see. I can't remember if I've used GIF for GameBoy Advance images (use PNG for them), but it'll reproduce anything from Game Boy to Genesis and probably SNES (since the palette is still well within range of the 8-bit color limit) perfectly. If you're having trouble with GIF images, it could well be the software. MSPaint got better in WindowsXP but it's still not brilliant at exporting GIFs.
Hope that answers your question.
Lady Jaye

FYI I'm using Photoshop Elements. Anyway, it's Joe's call, not yours.
Ed Oscuro
12-03-2003, 11:23 AM
I use Photoshop 7. Your point? I just know how to use my software well. I don't post a lot of GIFs, but I'd point you towards my website. Most of the company logos I've created myself from larger size originals (and gotten most down to merely a few hundred bytes in size).
Yes, it's Joe's call all right, which is why I offered to do it nicely. I didn't demand anything o-O. I'm still not that happy with the way it came out, and I didn't have the feeling an innocent complaint from somebody who's been working with Photoshop for a couple years and knows the file format inside out would garner this sort of response.

Generally I use JPG for high-color games (anything from the PlayStation era and up, for example) and GIF for games with a limited palette. JPG images that are 640 x 480 look fine when reduced and printed.
I'm also not sure if you're referring to the JPG THUMBNAILS, which in general look awful but they're not the final product. If you just opened a gallery all of those images are clickable - just in case you hadn't noticed.
Ed Oscuro
12-03-2003, 03:05 PM
I see about the thumbnails. I suppose if you recieved the screenshots as JPG...can't do much unless you've got a BMP to start with. Still, if anybody wants images made into GIF I'm still offering to do that (macros are wonderful :)

Sounds convenient and PC Engine/Duo games are still very "light" here - but title screens are the least useful of all screen shots for our projects. We're using them to show what a game in play looks like or to jog someone's memory about the games they used to play, should they stumble into the picture. If you have in-game screens, I'd gladly use them.

Manuals? Those would be very useful down the road.

Also, I've got literally tons of Official PlayStation Magazine demo discs (and the magazines to match) from roughly 1998 up to the intro of the PS2. I'll be going through them soon, so if I find anything interesting I'll let you know. Or let me know what you need... :)

Note that I'm trying to limit the online screen shots to one or two, but have saved anything sent to me in the "for future projects", including the next book of course.
I'd still possibly like to help...
You still can! consider the massive libraries of emulatable systems like Game Boy, Super NES, PC Engine, PlayStation... If you can work with the emulators of pretty much any system, there's still plenty of room for you. We'll just need to coordinate.
Anyone interested in jumping in, just e-mail me at digitalpress@email.com and let me know what you'd like to work with, I'll coordinate with the others working on that same system to avoid any duplication.
Hmmm, I'm not finding any R-Zone emulators so far, this may be a project and a half...
I've given this a little thought, because eventually we're gonna need them. There's two ways I can think of handling R-Zone, both require owning the variations of the system. Both require a camera and a tripod (or an unusually steady hand). If you have the "Super Screen" version, taking the picture in a dark room with no flash should work, though I wonder how well the details will show up - the pics would probably have to be very high resolution. Alternatively you could try the camera/tripod set-up with the XPG handheld version, this would be even tougher because a) you'd have to hold the unit steady or fasten it somehow so the picture stays in the shot; b) the lighting could be very tricky, I'd start with external lights on but you might have to take these in the dark too.
It's a challenge, but it may not be a project and a half. :)
Joe --- I am interested in doing the SuperVision. Thanks bud.
Excellent. I've listed you at the top of this thread.
