View Full Version : NBA Shoot-Out 2004 for PSX... WHY?

I was checking out the steadily dwindling list of PSX new releases and noticed that NBA Shoot-Out 2004 (and FIFA 2004) were released fairly recently at $29.99.
Now I've been enjoying these late releases, and it's REALLY getting late now, so I'm wondering. WHO would buy these games? How many people stopped buying consoles at the PlayStation and would STILL pay $30 for a PlayStation game?
Perhaps even more annoying is the fact that I'll have to buy this someday. Because I have to believe that the sales of a game like this are staggeringly low.
For those of you working in retail, am I off on this? Is there an undercurrent of PSOne devotees hanging in there and snatching up these new high priced sports games?

You'd be surprised at how much business we do for the old PSX. A lot of the games new/used are less than $10, and most of the new ones are just kinda filler product-so I can understand the "premium" $30 price point. Most of our PSX are lower-class citizens(I hate to pigeonhole, but it's the truth), or parents starting their kids off in the world of gaming.
To most of us who have moved beyond, it seems silly. But there's a surprising number of folks still hanging on.
The games aren't flying out the door, but we do move them fairly often. It's those stragglers that are STILL priced at $39.99 we can't get rid of. x_x

Check out my survey link I posted last night, DP. :D
In it, a third of the respondents said they still buy games for their PSX.

Most of our business is PS2 or Nintendo products. (Mostly Game Boy)
Rarely do we sell a PS1 game.

I still buy PSX games all the time.
Then again, I pretty much *have* to, stupid rarity list thing. LOL

I'm still buying as well, but I won't pay more than $10. Don't forget Madden and Nascar are out thee as well.

Since I've been at Circuit City I've sold....well...not a single ps1 game. Personally I still buy them though, that reprint of Metal Slug X was too nice to pass up, and I need to snag a copy of Incredible Crisis sometime. I can't imagine paying 30 for a dated sports game though....a bit harsh.
edit: Ps1 games I've bought THIS YEAR:
Dragon Warrior VII
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug (import)
All Star Slammin' D-Ball
Valkyrie Profile
Guilty Gear
Fighter Maker
Gundam Battle Assault 2
Blaster Master: Blasting Again
Raycrisis
...and those are just off the top of my head!
edit again: Whoops! Misread the question! Answer: NO!

Yeah you're missing my point completely.
In my initial post I state that I DO TOO. But there's a big difference between $10 games and $30 games - especially when the $30 games are sports games, something you would surely spend the money on for a newer console.
I've got every $14.99 and under release for PSOne since 2000 and love my system. This is a very specific question about $30 sports games on PSX.
Ya dig?

Reminds me of when I worked at Kay-Bee Toys in 2002, and I had to explain to some kid and his mom that MLB 2003 was the only baseball game coming out for PS1 that year. He wanted All-Star Baseball, but it was only on GameCube, PS2, and Xbox at that point. When I told his mom that she should invest in a new console if he wanted that franchise, she started into a tirade about the game companies. Parents love PS1 because it's cheap. Kids want PS2, but they have to take what they get, CONSARNIT!
As far as the price being so high, it's funny to me because one place will clearance that game out in droves, I'll buy it, and fly it on over to another store to trade it in for way more than what it's worth...
@DP - Better question: NBA Shootout 2004 for PS2 - Why?

And what may I ask is wrong with that? :PFor us, nothing. For the picky kids, everything.

That IS a good question, though I guess I can understand the various development houses wanting to have the best sports game in a particular sport each year. It's a bit much for the consumer to digest, though. And even worse a year, two years... five years later when this stuff literally has to be shoveled out of the way to find good titles!
