Trying to trans the prologue. I can do about 80% of it off my the top of my head, but there's a few characters I can't remember (but should).

Here's the gist. I'm TOTALLY skipping the first paragraph, as it's a bit 'poetic' and deserve some attention. But, the story goes:

This is teh story of the land called Ivareece (sp?)

The Arcadia Empire, which rules the Varentia Continent, has been fighting many years with the Rozaria Empire, who controls the Ordaria Continent.

The Arcade Empire invades the Kingdom of Darmaska. Very small, yet conveniently placed between the two continents.

Ashe, a royal descendent of the the Kingdom of Darmaska participates in the resistance, carrying out anti-empirical acts.

Her enemies attacks are fierce, but she does not lose heart.
At that time, she meets a young boy named Vaan.
As they met, a change is born in her heart.

And...

Their meeting, will change the story of this world.

Kinda standard stuff. I heard this was related to FFVII somehow. I don't recall these names.

There are no ties to Final Fantasy VII, but "Ivareece" is probably supposed to be "Ivalice," the land where both Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Advance took place. Since those two games weren't really related (as far as I know), I'd guess that the Ivalice in Final Fantasy XII is just one of those recurrent Square things, like Cid or black mages.

That's all I've got, but one of the game screens shows a third character, a woman (or man, I guess) with white hair. I assume that she/he is controllable.

Thanks for the translation, GP.

Kind of a shit translation... might put some more time into it later. The first paragraph talks about the legend, connected by stones or some goofy crap like that.

As far as the names of places go -- who knows. I've only played FFX, and am in the middle of VII. BOth Japanese versions since I've got not English playing PS/2. Even if I knew the names of the places in Japanese, I'd probably still mis-romanize them. :)

Hell, I would've romanized the names Varn and Arshe if they weren't written in English. :)

My avatar? It's Oglethorpe, the dense alien invader with the hilarious German accent, and a recurring character on Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force (http://www.athf.com/guide_season1.php) (now available on DVD).

And in case anyone missed it, you can spot a third FFXII party member in two of the screenshots. Apparently one of those white-haired Viera bunny-women from Tactics Advance, she's engulfed by fire during a battle scene, and standing on the left in another screen. I don't know how to romanize her name, though, since there are several ways to do it: Huran, Furan, Hulan, Fulan, Fran, and so on . . .

Was'nt this game delayed in Japan? When is it due to be out there? At least then we could them estimate a US release.

Well, since yesterday was the first information on the game (besides the bullshit poster at the TGS) I wouldn't say the game was delayed.

They say it' schedule for a Summer 2004 release.

Well, we MIGHT see it for Christmas 2004 then. But early 2005 sounds more in line.

I recall reading a Square article saying it was delayed. Well, we'll see....

1up.com has an informative preview of the game, and it confirms that the Viera's name is Fran. Yes, the fearsome archer . . . Fran.

Well... there's always some freedom in romanizing names, although I could see the US release matching whatever the Japnaese release says (in the few parts they mention on websites and books and whatnot) even if it sounds wrong/stupid.

I can only imagine how people pronounced Tidus from FFX.

Actually, I think one is audio only. Sorry.

Looks like Fran will be the chick w/ the long white hair and the ass floss... at least as far as I can tell.

I do have to say, that site is kicking some serious ass.

I'm glad thier getting away from all the techno stuff. I like FF7 and all, but I still think 9, with the purely fantasy story and the "one character, one job" is really the way it shoudl be.

I really hate it when you can make everyone do everything else (i.e. Giving your healer quad-materia. Or moving Lulu through Aurons side of the sphere grid.)

And those screen shots are pretty amazing. Good God, look at the detail on the main characters sword!

oh my thoughts exactly...when all the characters are (or become) the same it takes all the strategy away. Is FFX this way? I've played through 5 or 6 of them but haven't played any ps2 ones...

X is not like this until you start doing some of the crazy-hard sidequests that open up at the end of the game. Up until that point, characters follow their own paths on the sphere grid and have very specialized roles. Even then, you'll likely take fighters down another fighters path and mages down another mages path. Characters becoming the same really only takes place if you try and finish the monster arena (which requires all sorts of customizing voodoo).

VII and VIII DO have this issue, but even then, you're better served to artificially split your characters into set classes as it's more effective. They just give you the choice.

Anyways, having seen the preview trailer, my "fears" of having a setting too similar to FFX are totally gone. Definately looks unique, and the in game shots of the characters seem like a far cry from the Yuna/Tidus look-alikes I was complaining about before.

The Materia thing has good and bad points. I like the flexibility, but I feel strange having the strongest guy healing people if I want it that way. Just seems un-RPG to me. I need to play through X again, but probably won't for a while. There's like 3 other long RPGs I'm wanting to play right now (X2, Xenogears, and FFVI).
