I know that Paypal and Ebay have plans to protect buyers but is there anything at all in place to protect sellers?
I've unfortunately have had a rash of bad ebay/Paypal selling experiences lately. Now I have some guy claiming that he didn't receive the Gamecube NCAA 2K3 basketball game that he won from me. He says that he received the package but that there was a football CD in the case instead of the basketball game. Now I know that this is bullshit as I never purchased a NCAA football game for the Gamecube. Plus the auction picture even shows the CD itself. I really believe that he's just trying to scam me. But what can I do? I'm sure that if he contests the payment he'll end up getting his money back because Paypal is like a drunken sailor with my money. I'll end up taking a hit for $55 just because Paypal allows this to happen. Is there anything that a seller can do to ensure that sold items STAY sold other than to stop accepting Paypal payments

I had someone try to pull the same thing with me.
Pay-pal said they were investigating the matter. 3 days later they sent an e-mail to both of us saying that they have no way of looking into matters of "item not as described or not in the condition described " so they were dropping it.
They really have no way of verifying , so they just make sure you sent it with delivery confirmation and to a confirmed address and they leave it at that.
So I don't think you have anything to worry about from the Pay-Pal side of it.
And also if he tries to use SafeHarbor just don't respond to the e-mails and they'll drop the case in 7 days.
Then all you have to worry about is E-Bay if he files Fraud charges, but explain your story and you should be fine.
Its getting worse and worse each day, soon I'll start to videotape when im packing, and keep videotaping all the way to the postoffice. :o
I have no idea how to protect myself from things like this.

Homer up there has a lot more ebay experience than I do, but I have been the buyer in a paypal situation similar to the one you mentioned. Paypal promptly refunded my money without even asking any questions.

Which is exactly what worries me.
For Paypal to refund a buyers payment without question whenever they request it is a policy screaming for abuse. I have to say that I've been seeing a lot more problems in the past few months than I have in the 2-3 years that I've been selling combined. Ebay/Paypal are going to start losing sellers and without sellers what will their precious buyers purchase?

Thing is paypal offers more protection than most credit card merchant accounts. I am not trying to defend paypal, it is just that the system totally favors the buyers. There is really nothing we can do except familiarize ourselves with the risks.

I thought I was safe payign for a guy on DIgital Press (figuring I could retract my bid) and he wasnt verified so I couldnt. Its true Paypal isnt all that great. Easy, but doesn't help much for protection. I got scammed for 200 bucks.

I guess there are no certainities now when selling and accepting paypal.....the best we can do is really browse through the buyer`s feedback, specially if we´re selling an expensive item.... x_x

again i have to defend them, ad long as the seller has had 10+ feedback and paypal confirmed/confirmed address i've had over 500 paypal trasactions alone that are golden. 100% saftey. anywhere from 4 to 2700 bucks.
err i better knock on wood now.
