Alright, so I finally got to play my import Metal Slug today (thanks AdamG!) and I noticed that unlike the US release of Metal Slug X (yes, I know they're different games), the blood in MS is red, whereas X seems to have the whole SNES MK "white sweat" going on. Is this just something that maybe Agetec decided to do, or did the import MSX also have the "sweat?" I was just wondering, because after you see the blood, it makes the sweat look silly. Anyone have any idea?

I think Metal Slug X is changed in other ways, the main boss isn't the Saddam-style guy, it's a bunch of aliens.

That was fully Agetec's decision to change the blood to sweat in the US release, as far as I know - the Japanese version of MSX still has the blood. Morden is in the US releae, but unlike MS1, he's not the final boss in any version of MSx that I'm aware of. The Mars People doublecross him and take him on board their ship, then you and Morden's forces team up to battle them.

In a way, I prefer the edited version. Watching those cartoon soldiers burn and die and scream and scream and scream is disturbing enough without blood involved.

Still, playing the Japanese version makes it seems as though Instructor Meg is shouting profanities at you. So I'm torn.

Ha, yeah I didn't know what to think when I entered Combat School in the JP version. I figured "everything up to this point has been in English." I didn't care for her shrill Japanese voice. I'll probably eventually import some other Slug stuff when I'm able. For right now I need to track down a copy of Cotton for the ps1 to see how it stacks up to the very fun NGPC version :D.

Cotton for PS1 is pretty fun. Wish I could read what the hell was going on.

This game is sooooooooooo gory to begin with. I think it would be cooler to have the blood, but makes it even more gory. I never really observed it.

Yeah, I hadn't really played an "uncut" Metal Slug (my arcade sucks) and when I first noticed what the shotgun did to enemies I was like "Holy Hell!" Glad to hear about Cotton, I think I saw it somewhere for $20 or so plus shipping, so I'll probably pick it up. It's nice to have a shooter that isn't from a spaceship :D.

Anyone have any other good 2D easy-to-understand imports for ps1 to recommend?

Well if you can find it somewhere... I believe it was translated. Just make sure your PS can play backups.

Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus and Gradius Gaiden. :D

There are more, of course, but I'm too tired to think of any right now.

Namco Museum Encore. Worth it just for Rolling Thunder, though Dragon Saber and Rompers are pretty nice too.

Oh yeah, NME. I second that.

It all has to go back to the NeoGeo, one could change the region the game played in. If one played it in the Japanese version, there would be blood, due to the Japanese not having problems with that "excessive" show of violence.

However, if the game was set in USA, the american version would be edited to show sweat. Due to American lawmakers, i.e. Joseph Lieberman et al., being as stingy as ever about videogame violence. the blood changes into "sweat".

Uhhh isn't it just a dipswitch setting to turn the blood on/off? :?

Or are you guys talking about the psx version or something?

Well, yes.. there is a dipswitch setting, but I was also saying that it is enabled in the JAP setting, and disabled in the USA setting.

But, I am thinking that it is the PSX vers. that they are talking about.

The PSX version is what we're referring to, yes.

On my UK MVS it is a soft switch setting. To be honest, I don't know if it is an option on the US boards. I think it is, but I'm almost 100% the defalut is white sweat, which is why the US PSX version of MSX has the white sweat. They just ported over the game with default options.

For other Neo games, such as the fighting games, it's strictly a region thing. My UK board doesn't seem to censor the "blood and bounce" and I play in English, where as the US boards do censor and for most games there is no workaround other than getting a region mod.
