I've talked to an old friend of mine bout NES-gaming and stuff (He was a big NES fan back in the days) and he remembered reading in a magazine bout Mario Kart in development for NES. He also told me that this was before SNES Mario Kart was even in sight and that there were some screenshots which showed a game looking similar to "Micro-machines" (bird-view,..)!
Don't ask me for the name of the magazine.....I don't know it.
I also searched google bout njet!
and it's not the "Kart Fighter" hack
so anyone heard bout that?
could it be that it was in development and canceled for the upcoming SNES?
mmhh...

no, never heard of it, but i must admit i didn't read gaming mags in the 8-bit time, it might be that it was some similar game perhaps only planned and/or released in europe, so it could be impossible to find info :(

I read something about a possible NES Mario Kart game in a fanzine not long ago... I believe it was a pirate hark, but not a hack of some other games like many pirtaes seem to be. Like Somari, this was a lovingly programmed game that tried to duplicate the SNES game with some sucess. I'll look it up.

Akkk. I looked it up. The game I THOUGHT was Mario Kart on the Famicom/NES is actually called "Kart Fighter" and instead of racing, the game is a "pretty special looking" 2-D fighter with Nintendo characters beating on each other. No dice. :o

I know that there were a bunch of NES games planned near the end of the systems life that in the end never made it there.
I know that for one, an official Street Fighter II almost made it to the NES but somehow the Jurassic Park game went there instead (yeah negitiations were really between those 2 games, can't recall which mag I read that in though).
It would not surprise me one bit if a Mario Kart had been planned for NES and canned in the end. Good thing though, if it came out on NES and was just an average game like Micro machines, it probably would not have been well accepted, especially since everyone was getting a Genesis at that time. if the game wasnt accepted, we may have never seen the series take off like it did.

SFII is Capcom, Jurassic Park is Ocean. That makes no sense.

Aw. To be fair, I think Micro Machines was a bit above "average." It's probably my favorite NES racing game.
Anyway. For what it's worth, I've never heard that Mario Kart was in development for the NES. And this is kinda my forte, so...

makes you wonder why no one has ever made an RC Pro-Am hack into Mario Kart...
