Great I stopped trying to DL all the RAR files for the CHD's that I need to make my MAME collection complete. I'll wait til all the CHD's are reformated then get em all. 8-)

I believe it stands for Compressed Hard Drive - if that's not it, it's pretty close. Basically they take the Hard Drives found i some newer arcade games and compress it into one big file, similar to an ISO file for CDs. They are changing to a more flexible format with the next release, and it uses a much higher compression ratio as well, saving lots of drive space.
