View Full Version : Most $$$ You've Ever Put in a Coin-op?

While playing some old favorites on MAME, I realized that back in the 80's these games consumed huge amounts of my quarters. Thanks to MAME, I can now put in a thousand credits if I want to, and go through the game without any financial worries. Yet, I can't help but remember the many dollars in quarters and tokens that I pumped into the slots of my favorite coin-ops.

During one particular trip to the arcade, I spent $5+ on Golden Axe II: The Revenge of Death Adder. I just had to beat that game and no amount of quarters was going to keep me from doing it.

I still peep into arcades where people pump the slots of Capcom fighting games with a steady flow of money. I once saw a line of people waiting for the sticks of Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

What's the most you've ever spent on a single coin-op game in one visit to an arcade?

when mortal kombat 2 was new, one day my mom dropped me off at the arcade on her way to work, and picked me up after. so i spent 8 or 9 hours playin mostly mk2 that day. dunno how much money that was.

another time i put in about 5 bucks to beat the simpsons arcade game.

Definitely the $5.25 and up crowd. Dragon's Lair, Super Don Qixote, Punch Out!!, Major Havoc, Star Wars, Tapper... so many more ALL took at least $5.25 (each) on any given night. They didn't all take <$5 on the same night, but like, $5.25 might have been spent on Punch Out!! in a night with another dollar or so being spread around to other games. The next trip might have spent <$5 on DL instead, etc.

yor poll is confusing.. I thought it ment How much did the most expensive coin-op cost you? The most I've ever put in a game is 2 quarters.. I've never played a game that too 75 cents or had a dollar slot.

I can easily sink more than $10 into a good pinball table. I'm sure I've done that with High Speed, South Park and Haunted House. There are others, but I can't remember them.

I know I spent about $6 playing Metal Slug at a Pizza Hut a year or so ago. (Of all places!)

Also, it's skewed by the fact that Gameworks used to have a "pay $10 and play all night" kind of thing. If I was using actual money, I know I've spent far more than $10 whipping people's asses at Hydro Thunder (8 linked cabinets! Too cool! I used to rule that game!), Crazy Taxi, Gauntlet, and House of the Dead 2. Good times.

On a Disney World trip Hiding_in_the_wall and myself must have put 25 bucks each into Gauntlet Legends. There was nothing else to do at night. Good thing Gauntlet 2 was not there or we would have pumped in 50 each.

$10+ on avg. during a nights of Street Fighter 2 at Golfland Arcade in Sunnyvale, CA during the competition heyday amongst all those crazy-ass players!

There are at least 15 cabinets that have seen $10 in quarters from me in a pop. The high value on this poll isn't HIGH ENOUGH! And I'm not at all surprised it's fairly unanimous so far (except for the one "confused" entry).

10-03-2002, 02:33 PM
I concur re the high value not being high enough. Maybe it should be "$20 or more". I mean, if you're not very good at House of the Dead, and you're paying $0.75 per credit, and you want to see the end, well...

I sunk over $25 into D&D: Shadow over Mystaria, cause me and some friends kept playing it after we beat it :)

You people scare me

I assumed no one would go past $10.00, but geez, you people have given me a whole new outlook on coin-op comsumption

$20.00 and beyond? I'll be damned if you people didn't have the deepest pockets back then! I was lucky to get ten bucks for my coin-op habit.

Some friends and I developed a tournament for Daytona USA where everyone got to qualify, then race each in heat races and then race each other in brackets type format. There was a few places that had four or more machines linked together so we always had a place to go. A roll of quarters ($10) was all you needed, unless you needed some alcohol too. We even had a bar owner give us $100 in free bar tab if we would give him a copy of how we did everything so he could have his own tournament.

And to this day I will challenge anyone on the coin op. I am godlike........... and I payed for it.

I spent about $20 on "911 Police". It's basically a shooting game which has ultrasonic sensors to determine if you duck right or left to take cover. It was the first time I had ever seen the game and figured in I didn't beat it then, that the sensors would be broken due to some kid hanging on it. Definately worth the money, although my legs were sore the next day.

I once pumped about 5.00 bucks into a simpsons arcade game, and got bored with it and quit.

Double Dragon ate at least $30 of my money, and the same of my buddy's. We were about 19 I think. Old enough to have some money to blow.

But it was awesome!

When I was a kid, 2 bucks max. My allowance was 2 bucks, and it belonged to the wizard's castle before I even had it in my hands.

I've easily spent 5-8 bucks on both Street FIghter 3: 3rd Strike and King of Fighters 98 at the local arcade. And considering KOF is only a quarter

Kroogah
10-04-2002, 11:59 AM
I can easily spend 5 bucks in an hour on a Dance Dance Revolution machine. And it's only 50 cents where I'm at (There are some ripoff arcades in California where it's 4 BUCKS A GAME!)

10-04-2002, 12:24 PM
I voted for $1-$1.50 and I meant it!

If a game costs more than one quarter, I'm only playing it once.

Occasionally I've spent a dollar or so on Golden Axe or Gauntlet, but that's it.

Hey, I'm not saying that I've dumped $20 or more into a coin-op at a go, but I can see it happening these days, what with a credit costing $1+ for some games. ($4/credit for DDR? Holy moley!) I think I probably drained about $10 into HOTD to see the end. I think EVERY game should produce a wolf howl when you dump a quarter into it!

10-04-2002, 09:42 PM
I've spent quite a bit, actually.

Close to 10 dollars once on Guardian Legends. I was so close to beating that damn dragon tooo!

Also, in a day, I've spent over 15 bucks on DDR (Damn those California machines.)

2 coin-ops that I recall spending a large amount of money in one sitting were Galaga and Xybots. At least $20.00 each and Galaga took me for at least a C-note over time.

we have a tiny arcade here called "the wonder zone" where you pay 2 bucks and the machines cost 5 cents each so its harder to get to the high money amounts, but i've spent about 30 bucks in one night in nickels, between about 4 machines. simpsons, pole position, tekken, and some star trek style game that i can't remember the name of.

Ok, on three occasions when i was young, i spent an entire roll of quarters on one game.
The first was Super Off Road on my 5th grade family vacation to Circus Circus in Reno.
The secend and third are near the same time line (8th gradish?)
X-men, and that Dungeons and Dragons game...both sidescrolling fighters im sure you know the ones.
Anyways, those games all rock, and if i could have on coin op machine in my house, i think my first chioce would still be that big ass X-men game:)

I'm with omnedon. The Double Dragon games used to eat up alot of quaters when me and my friends would play till the end.

Another one was Heavy Barrel.

I think i spent about $ 10 to finish Captain Commando when i was a child and i remember one time when i was with four boys playing Sunsetriders and we opened the box where you put the coins and we moved a little stick when we are out of credits, i think we put 250 credits :D and finish the game.
Then i played a lot to "The house of the dead" and i really don´t know how much money i spent on it :/

SF2 had just come out in the arcades. One of the greatest arcades in London called Las Vegas had 7 credits for £1 on their machines. So I spent hours and hours, days and days playing this thing single, but mainly two player against strangers and mates. God knows how much money I've put into the machine over the years...

$10 multiple times in Terra Cresta or Mat Mania.

aroung 8-9-10 I remember one time starting out with $10, the Donald Ducks(Chicago Irving and Kedsie?) that had these games never had change, or so they say. So i went to the Currency exchange and got a roll of quarters, but the problems is that it cost 15 cents, so i had to open the roll to get a quarter out to pay them.

So what do i do when i walk out the door, drop the damn roll. Quarters roll everywhere. and i was picking them up, som went under the suntimes and tribune box, stuck my hand under there and, Whats this? A big ole bag of weed. drugs are bad, i knew it, i was scared that they'd get my fingerprints off of it if the police found it. so i stuffed it in my pocket, my friend sees me, what am i doing, i show him and he said lets take it to my mom. We take it there, she can't believe it, and takes it and goes the the warshroom and "flushes it"

That night i remember she was smoking her funny smelling cigs. took me a few years to figure that one out. went back the next day and ended up blwoing at least the left over quarters on one of those games. -_-

today-DDR takes up $20 to $30 dollars of my paycheck. (have to drive an hour to the nearest DDR machine, so i better damn well get my money's worth). Police 911 eats my tokens now too.

yesterday- (1999 and below) virtua fighter 2 ate many quarters, so did the galaga and pac man at the laundrymat. slient scope was a good one. finally was able to beat it w/ one dollar. golden axe was another one. and pinball machines.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've put down well over $100 into the NBA Hangtime/NFL Blitz machine at the arcade at my university's Student Union (over a two year span). Played and beat all of the NBA teams, as well as the NFL teams. But I own nearly all of the records, including consecutive wins in the NBA game. Not to mention scoring 150 pts with Vince Carter in one game. He was "on fire." :D

I think th emost I spent in *one* itting was $10 on Space Harrier in '88 Back then i didn't even have the SMS game yet.

Nowdays... well... I can't remember the last time I spent a quarter as many of the arcade games mostly sucked and I don't want to shell out over a dollar just for 30 seconds of game time.

The most I fed one machine in one sitting would be at least $10 on Mortal Kombat II.
But at least I beat it.

From my experience i'd say that the game I COULD have sunk the most quarters into would be Terminator 2.
I remember puttin in around 2 or 3 dollars sometimes and still not getting past the Human Hideout Level.

Oh man...
I remember when I was a kid (about 10), my familly was staying in some hotel in Florida, and there was a Simpons game (I can't remember the name of it... if anybody knows.. tell me - Its where you have to fight your way through the streets to save Maggie - Marge has a vaccum cleaner). Me and my brother played that game for soooo long, and we kept asking our dad for quarters. We must have chucked at least $20 bucks in there. We did actually end up beating it too.

I don't think the other one that I've put alot of quarters in counts. I've put about $50 worth of quarters in a Super Mario Bros. arcade. Thing is, I own it. :P

i take it we are talking in one visit.. cos if this is totals, you people are lame as anything.. in one go i've spent AU$45 on one skill tester.. but i won about $300 worth of prizes..

in total, i have spent countless hundreds of dollars on ddr.. i hate to think about how many games i've played.. i played 102 credits on f-zero ax in total, most of them were free.. but regardless, that wasnt even a fraction of the amount i played ddr..

remember though, arcades here in australia have no games cheaper than $1.. some games are $3 for one credit.. it's fucked

Over $10 on Metal Slug 4, and about $5 on Daytona USA 2001.

It sucks I only been into one arcade place in my whole life (I played some arcade machines in Pizza places, but that's it). So to make the best of it, I spend a crapload of money on arcade games. It sucks because there was no shoot 'em ups in the place!

1st place: $17 in one night on Shinobi. And the worst of it was that I never got past the level 3 boss. :embarrassed:

2nd place: $8 on Starblade Alpha. This was the very rare (and very heavy) sitdown cab, which was a real treat to play. I was not leaving the arcade until I beat that damn thing. One of my best arcade experiences ever. :D
