It is good to see that Sega has decided to go through wiith thier best idea in a long long time. They should just stick to what they have done best and improve upon it. Lets just hope the price is right like it was overseas!

They remade IV? I thought they only remade Phantasy Star 1.

Oh well, any of them coming to the US is a good thing :D

WRONG! :D *BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ* Chuck, tell him what he's lost!

Sega Ages remade Phantasy Star, not Phantasy Star IV. There is NO remake of Phantasy Star IV for any system. Sorry.

As for this news....YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY! I WILL BUY ALL OF THESE (except Space Harrier which holds a special hatred for me)! Especially Phantasy Star, Monaco GP, and Golden Axe!

Monaco GP + Golden Axe = :rocker:

Now all we need is an Sega Ages version of Turbo.

Please let them be only $20 apiece... please please please...

Or less, of course. :D

All I have to say is stay away from Golden Axe. The genesis version is way better. The only reason I see getting it is if its $20 and your a big fan. The gameplay is pretty bad and the graphics aren't too hot either.

Duude...we can do without the "NO YUOR WRONG!!!!1" type stuff, seriously.

It's not released yet, but it's been promised.

Linky link (http://www.the-magicbox.com/game120302.htm):

- Sega announced a list of new Sega AGES game titles for PlayStation 2, remakes of their classic Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, Saturn titles. Each game will retail for 2500 yen, and the first four titles are scheduled to release in Japan in summer 2003.

Golden Axe (summer 2003)
Space Harrier (summer 2003)
Phantasy Star (summer 2003)
Fantasy Zone (summer 2003)
Alex Kidd in the Miracle World
Gain Ground
Puzzles and Action: Tant R
Virtua Racing
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star IV: End of Millennium
Bare Knuckle (Street of Rage)
Bonaza Brothers
Monoco GP
Last Bronx

As you can see, all the core Phantasy Star games (with the notable exception of three) are listed as coming.

My vague plans to "someday" purchase a Playstation2 are now definite and nigh.

Good move, corporate entities!

I'd say this also alleviates my problem with having to worry about buying a Japanese PS2 and struggle with the Japanese text in Phantasy Star.

I can just get a US one and play the US discs :D

Right, that's what I ment. Sorry. I just have to hold out hope that the PS2 port of PS4 WILL find it's way out in the States and not be canceled like Enix did to DW 4.

Well I hope the release Phantasy Star II
I would be a reason for me to buy a PS2 :)

I don't think PSII will be out for a while... and I'll be shocked if PSIV is out before next Fall. Neither were on display at the TGS2003, but Gain Ground and Afterburner were... two games that won't be releasd until Spring (maybe late winter) and were only 20% and 60% complete.

There was one VERY cool thing on display at the TGS, which I would've loved to steal. Original character designs of the Phantasy Star characters, and some enemey desigs. Complete with artists notes and whatnot.

Nice.

I've got the import Golden Axe and Phantasy Star, and as Drexel said, best to steer clear of Golden Axe. It might be an OK "collectible" $10 title but to be perfectly honest the original arcade game is much better. The 3D graphics with a 2D engine just do NOT work here.

Phantasy Star is very nice though, and in Japan these are packaged with little binder sheets, Phantasy Star has the actual binder to put them in. I hope that part of the packaging comes over here as well.

Oh, they'll definitely be $20 (or $10). Conspiracy is a budget publisher, and Sony wouldn't allow these games to ship at $30 or more anyway.

Let's not look gift horses in the mouth, now.

I'm definitely sold on the Phantasy Star remakes, and I wouldn't mind Fantasy Zone or Space Harrier. But do you know the Sega classic that I'd most want to see released in next-gen form?

Someone explain. Some people are calling them reamkes, others are acting like they're direct ports. Which are they?

Its going to be great if most of the games are going to be $10

They are remakes. The gameplay is identical to the originals, but the graphics have been updated.

I liked the Golden Axe one, the updated graphics didn't really change the game that much to me. I couldn't stand the Space Harrier. I revisited it one day just to see if it would grow on me and it didn't.

Phantasy Star is very close to the original. The main difference is that there's a LOT more text, and it's totally linear. Every non-linear aspect of the original is gone. The mazes, however, are identical down the square -- even some of the items in them are the same. The level up path is totally different. Spells are different as well.

From what I've seen Gain Ground is probably going to have the same stages, and Afterburner... well... who knows.

Perhaps, but I still think that's lazy or greedy. Maybe I expect too much, but I just don't see any reason these should be released individually. Not only is that giving the fans a little something more, but I think the mainstream gamer is much more likely to pick up a collection of old games rather than buy a disc with just one.

At least they aren't releasing them on pieces of cardboard and forcing me to buy a scanner to play them. :P

If the games were simply re-releases instead of remakes, a compilation would be in order, but these are new versions of older titles. And though I wouldn't mind a bundle, I must admit that collections of classic games tend to leave me with only one or two titles that I play with any frequency. So I see no problem with paying $20 (or $10, I hope) for a single release instead of $50 for all five games.

Look at it this way: With the Sega Ages titles available individually, you won't have to endure the presence of a hated RPG in your collection.

Hearing that Phantasy Star will be coming here is the best news I heard all day. I would love them to do releases of Shining force 1/2 or a 3D version of Herzog Zwei :D

I agree. All the games in the series are reprogrammed --- no way they're going to put them in a collection, besides the ones that come together. Columns + Bonanza Bros.
