This week's game was chosen by Wisesalesman. The next person on the Mame Club list will get to choose their game the coming week and must PM me with the chosen title by Monday night at the very latest.

When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. It would also be nice to let us know other aspects of the emulation. Here are some things that would be good to know:

Did you like/dislike the game? Why?
What type of machine are you running it on? Specs?
What version of Mame?
How long did it take you to beat it? Score?

Again, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game!

This week's game can be found here (as always):

Aw, man! I love this game! One of the more innovative fighters on the Geo that is Neo...

Review coming soon! :)

I reviewed this on my web site... you'll find that review here:

http://grblitz.overclocked.org/lostring.htm#wakuwaku7

You'll also find a detailed strategy guide for Waku Waku 7 here. It should come in handy, even though several of the moves are already listed in the game itself.

P.S. Hey, Zaxxon! Sign me up for the MAME club, would 'ya?

Don't you mean Zektor? :P

It's okay. I'm glad that I'm not the only one that confuses their names. LOL

FYI, Bonus-Kun is God. :hail:

WAKU WAKU 7?! You guys are KILLIN' ME.

Alright, I just finished loading the 13MB FILE. Have fun! And hey, if anyone wants to pick a nice small game, that would be just great too.

Sorry Joe. Waku Waku 7 was the only game I could think of that I play on MAME that could come CLOSE to being called obscure. The only other two I can think of are Luck and Wild (emulated poorly) and Top Hunter (not really obscure at all, anymore).

As far as the game goes, I love the graphical style, and the variety in the types of characters. That moves are flashy, and the game is fun for a bit. The dialog's not bad either, considering the situations presented.

Biggest complaint? Probably the A.I. As you play, you'll notice that the A.I. consistently gets cheaper and cheaper as you go, and eventually seems like it knows what moves you're going to pull before you do.

Sorry I haven't been particularly active in the club since its inception. The end of the semester isbearing down on me, and I didn't even get a chance to DOWNLOAD ESP da.re (or whatever it was called) let alone play and write about it. The only reason I had time to write about Waku Waku 7 is because I already know about the game and didn't have to play through it again.

Hope you all enjoy my pick! :D

You expected something else from a Geo fighter? ;)

Anyway, I played this one after a recomendation in another thread. I always thought it was a puzzle game. :embarrassed: Anyway, this is one hell of a fighter. Not a whole lotta characters to choose from however but the gameplay is solid enough. I'll post some more later when I'm less tired. Good pick.

I'll just jump in here if you don't mind. I was putting off work and I gave it a shot, pretty good, just got done playing it for 20 minutes.

Did you like/dislike the game? Why?
I liked it a lot in my short time with it. At first it reminded me of Power Stone for some inexplicable reason (maybe the fact that I was jump kicking a lot), then I got Marvel vs. Capcom flashbacks as well. The music and sounds I heard were great, there was a Westernish-song on one of the levels that just sounded amazing. Overally I really liked the pace of the game as well as the characters and art. It's a cool game I'll definitely spend more time with when I'm on break... and when I have a controller. Right now I played it on my laptop keyboard, which I've somehow gotten used to playing SF2CE and the moves were eons easier to pull off here than fireballs, dragon punches in SF2. I played as Rai and I think he just had df and fd moves because I was jamming those out on the kb prolly faster than I would with a pad or stick. Regardless, I can't wait for my DS2 adapter to get here b/c my hand hurts.

What type of machine are you running it on? Specs?
Dell Latitude D600 Laptop
14.1”TFT
Pm 1.4GHz
512 MB RAM,
XP

What version of Mame?
Mame32 .77
The game ran flawlessly on my laptop steady 100% 60/60 as soon as the title screen loaded. These are my current MAME settings if anyone's interested:
Default MAME 32 EXCEPT:
-Triple Buffering
-Draw Every Frame
-Direct 3D (texture & roto) Filter- Bilinear, Effect- Aperture Grill, Prescale Auto
-RDTSC Timing System OFF

How long did it take you to beat it? Score?
Got to the sixth guy (well, actually girl) I think before dying (or, rather, my hand killing me). Oh, and that Bonus Bag beat me up too.

Hope I didn't intrude! :)

Dude, there are plenty of obscure games available for MAME! I just reviewed nearly a half-dozen of them in my latest Digital Press column.

Huh? I never said there weren't. I said Waku Waku 7 is the only game i play in MAME that comes close to being obscure. It's also the only decently emulated and truly obscure game I have the ROM for already, and, with mame.dk gone, I'm not exactly sure where to get more these days.

Just ask. If you're not hunting through the usenet then either Zektor or I should be able to supply it at the videogamearchive.com site.

Well, I just finished playing it for awhile now... and here's my thoughts:

I like the graphical style, nice and colorful... and there's a good amount of frames for each character. The backgrounds are nice, but don't knock you out. The game reminded me of Vampire Savior (with some of the characters being very similar, and the ability to jump on someone when they're down). It's quite a button masher, but it's fun. It also reminded me of Sunsoft's Sega Saturn release Astra Superstars which was fun in short doses.

I don't have a working joystick right now for the computer, so I really had to suffer with the controls. Fighting games are not meant to be played on a keyboard! The AI gets very cheap, and very frustrating. Most of the moves are rolls like in SF.

The music comes and goes.. there's one stage that has some japanese girl singing in the background, which was awful, and then others were good. The sound effects are pretty standard (groans, grunts, intros), but are nice and clear.

I like the character design a lot, especially Bonus-kun and the Fernandez looks interesting, even though I can't get to him. I'd like to give it a spin two-player and see how it plays. I'm sure it would be fun, but there are only a few characters, and my early impression is that they are not so well-balanced. Not that's any surprise with most of the fighters these days.

Anyway, I had a good ime playing it and would definitely recommend it for fighting fans.. I had a little trouble getting it going.. needed to update my NEO-GEO roms, I guess. But, once it loaded, I had no trouble on my 1.2 with 256 megs (aside from the joystick). Another nice pick.. I'd give it an 8/10 overall.

You want a game that's obscure and gives Waku Waku 7 a run for its money in a much smaller file size? (well, not as fun, but graphically pretty close...ANYHOW..!)

Try Kyukyoku Sentai Dadandarn. Regret you will not, though you might come out of the experience a bit less sane than you went in.

...well, okay, it's 8,233 KBytes, but that's still a sight better than Waku Waku 7 :P

Anyhow, Waku Waku 7 = bleh. Yeah. It's okay, I suppose, but I never could get "into" it. Not a terrible fighting engine though.

Well haven't had much time to play with any of the latest selections since I went on vacation but obviously have the day off and decided to try it out.

Did you like/dislike the game? Why?
I personally did not like this game almost immediately but I was working under a pre-existing bias - I despise fighting games. Maybe it is the simple fact that I suck at them or I hate trying to remember all the moves and pull them off consistently but they are not for me. I decided to go ahead and play it and try to give the game a fair shake to see if I could find any redeeming features that appealed to the fighter-hater. I liked the fact that it tells you some of the moves off the bat so I didn't feel completely clueless. The game had pretty good graphics overall though I thought a few of the backgrounds were rather busy. Some of the fighters were a little weird - the robotic maid for instance had me wondering what they were smoking when they came up with that character. Sound was average with nothing really outstanding to distinguish it. Control seemed pretty resposive and I don't recall ever bitching that 'that isn't what I pressed!' which is unusual for me on any game :) Overall I would rate it a 5/10. Coming from me for a game in this genre, it is high praise.

What type of machine are you running it on? Specs?
Asus motherboard 1.8GHz Athlon
512 M RAM
Diamond Viper V550 16M
17" monitor
Windows 98SE
Hot Rod SE

What version of Mame?
Mame32 .77 using default settings

How long did it take you to beat it? Score?
Sorry. About 4 quarters worth was the most I could stand :) I take my fighting games in small doses

Well, if I come across the rom somewhere, I'll certainly give it a shot. You could, of course, pick it when it's your week, too. Then I'd definitely have a chance to try it. :D

I apologize, but you're not getting a detailed review of Waku Waku 7. I just can't find the time to write one. I mean, it's an excellent game and all, but I just can't find the words to describe it. Plus, it's Saturday. A new game will take its place soon.

Sorry. :(

You just can't handle the EXTREME AWESOMENESS, can you?

Besides, this game isn't half as homosexual as Dead or Alive 2/3, what with Bayman and his boyfriend.

Ssssshhhhhhh!!! You must not utter the name of that game! :eek 2:

I haven't played the shooter, but I have played the SNES beat-em-up. How bad is it? It sucks phallus. Also, pun intended. LOL

Who else got the news that X-Nauts (Psikyo) is working on a CHOANIKI SEQUEL?!? Homoeroticism to come again... um, that's bad, right? Oh, crap... I spoke of the forbidden game. :frustrated:
