I give up, I don't think there's a spare RGB monitor in all of New England so I go here. If you have one spare that works and has good sound (I want to use this with my supergun) let me know. I prefer this to be from the States as I do want to keep shipping low.

This is probably a dumb question but what kind of connectors are used on a monitor of this type, do you have a pic?

I don't personally, and in fact I'd get a cable custom made for whatever RGB connector the monitor used. Different ones use different pinouts.

Adam,

if you're technically inclined, there's a good thread on arcade controls that talks about how you can make an RGB connector for any TV..

Then again, you might not want to open a TV and modify it.

Your other choice would be to pick up a dead TV (with a good working CRT) and then getting one of the 8-liner chasis.. Again, lost of great info on that web site forum!

This way, you can get yourself a 25" for less than 100$!

good luck!

What kind of supergun setup do you have now? :hmm: Whether it's a commercial MAS or Great Western Trading, or a homemade deal, it should have a converter for composite or S-video. Most of the homebuilt ones use the JROK for this. But an s-video pic is quite nice. :)

RGB monitors is kind of vague. You have arcade monitors like an MVS cab for instance, and there are the commercial tv studio types, someone posted a link here from ebay a few months back, was around a 25" that used all sorts of inputs, but also had RGB. edit here be the link to a similar monitor: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2958100450&category=21517

That's not a bad looking one would also act like a tv, and is fairly large, not as large as a 36" but could also be rotated for vertical shooters! Some old computer monitors have RGB on them, but most of them are pretty small, not so great for gaming.

I think using a jrok thru S-video hooked to a nice TV is pretty good, a monitor would take up mucho space. For the money you'd spend on one of those monitors posted in the ebay auction above, you could probably afford a real arcade cab. Some you could sell off the board since you'd be going mvs anyway, so that's less money, could work out fairly cheap for a nice setup.

This is also a pretty cool site, in case you are considering a real cab:

Might be able to find something local, to save on shipping.

Adam, go to ebay, and look up Sony PVM 2530. or Sony PVM 2030. One is 25 inches, the other is 20 inches.

You will see them going on there for high prices, but if you are patient, you will find one for 100 bucks.

I saw a guy selling them for 150 with free shipping.

You can't beat a Sony PVM for picture quality. They are great with S-Video and Composite too, but RGB is the way to go with them.

I've been playing my TurboGrafx-16 in RGB on my Sony PVM-2530, and let me tell you, it's a dream come true.

As for needing sound, the back of these sony's have speaker connections. Just hook any cheapo bookshelf speakers to it and you're set.

I too have been looking for a monitor of this type. probably not looking as hard as AdamG as i don't want to jack his thread as i've laxed off of it. I couldn't really find one to fit my standards.....so i just dropped the supergun idea. But would this sony monitor/tv be good for video games in general as well? like xbox, ps2...GCN? It sounds like it would be but maybe you have some good advice....Thanks in advance.

Even component video, the newest fad out on the market (which is much better video quality than S-Video) doesn't look as good as pure RGB.

The Jamma board generates RGB, and all TVs convert to RGB (be it on the chasis or on the neck board of the CRT). RGB is as pure as it gets...

If you have your super gun outputting RGB to an RGB monitor, it is IDENTICAL to the real arcade. If you output S-Video, it's close.. but not the real thing..

There's lots of web sites that show the quality difference..

The PS2 would look very, very good on the Sony PVM's. The reason why, is that you would be using a RGB cable. The same RGB cable that you would use with a PSone. The vast majority of PS2 games aren't progressive scan, and they would look best on a RGB monitor like the Sony PVM monitors.

But regarding XBOX and Cube, I defintely recommend going with a Progressive scan capable TV. A TV that does 480P at least. Also, there is finally a real deal VGA cable for the XBOX, it costs like 60 bucks though! But you can use it with any PC monitor for great results. I don't know if the Cube has a "real" vga adapter available for it.

I hook my Cube and Box up to HDTV's for Progressive scan love, but all my old school systems are played in RGB. With the exception of the NES and 3DO. Neither system has any RGB capabilities whatsoever. The best video you can get from a NES is composite, and the best you can get from 3DO is S-Video.

I was pretty sure the PS2 didn't have RGB out without a fair bit of modding? :hmm:

It's a selectable option in the PS2's browser that's used in conjunction with the composite cables. I've never used it, but I know it's there.

No you don't need to do any mod. I don't have a PS2 myself, but I have a PS1, and I play it in RGB all the time.

I had a buddy of mine bring his PS2 over, to try it out in RGB, and it worked great! All we had to do was enable RGB in the option screen. Then we were playing Vice City in RGB. It was pretty freaking sweet.
