I know a lot of you are familiar with the game Rock N' Roll Racing that game out for the SNES. When I was younger, I remember renting an SNES game from Blockbuster that was almost *exactly* like Rock N' Roll Racing, but the setting was more realistic. I'm pretty sure it predates R-N'-R, but for the life of me I don't remember the name of the game. Even after doing some research on the internet, I haven't found any leads or screenshots. I don't even know if the game was made by the same company (but from what I recall, the control schematics and isometric view were near identical.

I remember first playing R-N'-R Racing and thinking, "Wow, this is a lot like (insert game title here). Does this supposed game exist, or am I conjuring up memories from nothingness? If anyone has any info, or even just the name of the game, my unending curiosity thanks you.

Well, everyone's sleeping right now but I managed to answer my own question, the game is RPM Racing... It's developed by the same exact people, just as I thought, but it's a REALLY shitty game. Rock N' Roll Racing is so polished, while RPM Racing is just an absolute mess of a game. It's still pretty interesting to see how the development of one game effected the development of the other.

I don't think I'm the first person to have noticed this correlation (in fact I'm pretty damned sure I'm not)... anyone else got any comments about this?

I think I was one of the few people who actually bought this when it came out.

Believe it or not, my friends and I had a blast with this game, and I still pull it out every so often.

The course editor was really nice, and at the time, I really liked the animation on the cars (the truck and the VW bug especially).

Of course, when you're relatively young, and have a limited library to choose from, you can make just about any game fun.

Well, a few titles come to mind that are similar to R-N-R racing. What I mean by this, is that they have the same overhead view of the cars, as opposed to a first or 3rd person view of the vehicles. These are:
Biker Mice from Mars: This game was based of an mostly umpopular childrens cartoon show in the 90s. You can play as three bad ass mice on motorcycles or three of their enemies. The overhead view is the same, and the gameplay is similar. One of the major differences is the Biker mice from mars had many more jumps on the tracks than R-N-R. Also, weapons were a bigger facor is R-N-R racing that in Biker Mice. For being a game that was baded off of a crappy cartoon show, this game is pretty damn good. Worth giving at look at in my book.

Radical Phsyco Machine Racing: This game, (also known as R.P.M. Racing), Is a huge steamy pile of dog poo. The control is terrible, the camera angles are frustrating, and the fun factor is at a well deserved zero. The overhead view of the game is very similar in style to R-N-R racing, but otherwise this game contains nothing of what R-N-R racing did right. RPM racing allowed you to lay mines in your wake, and because the control of your wildly fish-taleing was so piss poor, you would frequently hit them.

Battle Cars: This game is more of a rip off of F-zero than it is of R-N-R racing. But it does have weapons in it that are similar enough to cause some confusion. This game is set in more of a first person style. It allows you to hurl bombs ahead of you, shoot refectling discs, and also use your classic homing disc. A cool feature of this game, was that you could shoot people behind you as well. There was even a way to turn your car completly around on the race track with a swift manuever, then shoot the person on your tail, and then quickly move back. All the while, you were still heading forward.

I hope on of these games rings a bell.

I thought this thread would spawn jokes galore like

Racing the Blues

or

New Orleans Steamboat Racing

or

Jump N' Jive Jallopy Racing with the special hand crank controller

Yes! This is a great game I remember it well . I liked to turn the gravity down so the cars would get more air. Good times.

If you liked Rock 'N Roll Racing you would probably like the RC Pro Am games on the NES.

To be perfectly frank, I didn't like either one of those games. Biker Mice from Mars was a lot better, in my less than humble opinion.
