Happy Thanksgiving, folks!
I fired up the Dreamcast today and spent time with the following:
Midway's Greatest Hits Vol. 1
Atari Anniversary Edition
Cannon Spike
Bangai-O
Hoyle Casino
Maximum Pool
Project Justice
Expendable
Looney Tunes Space Race
Dynamite Cop!
Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1
I haven't touched the Dreamcast in a long time, and while I needed to work on the two papers that are due next week, it reminded me why the DC is my favorite system. Now to microwave this turkey dinner and open this copy of Xbox Counter-Strike...
Did anybody else burn up the day with a video-game marathon?

I spent the day WORKING. Only 12 more pages to go to finish my portfolio! :D The plan is to stay up all night working, so I can hit the black friday sales before bed time.

Neo Turf Masters Online
Puzzle Fighter Online
Neo Turf Masters is the shiznit and woefully addictive online.
Of course since I'm stuck here by myself at school, it wasn't like I missed out on anything (besides as much studying as I SHOULD have done). Heh.

I didn't do much, really. I remember playing SvC: MOTM, listening to Black No. 1 by Type O Negative, getting bloated off of succulent pineapple stuffing, watching one of the most abstract and beautifully animated films ever (try to guess which one!)... it was just a nice, laid-back quiet Thanksgiving. That's my ideal holiday. :)

I was sick as a dog yesterday, so I didn't do much. However, while the wife and kids were at my sister-in-law's place having dinner, I fired up the PS2. I got some time in with Indiana Jones And The Emperor's Tomb and an old PS1 demo disc I dug up from somewhere - games on it include: Fighting Force, Parappa, Raystorm, Croc, Armored Core, Steel Reign, Intelligent Qube and Treasures Of The Deep, among others, plus videos for a bunch of games I don't remember at all, like Exodus.

Sorry about what? Oh I know, you don't like SVC...are you one of those 'cool' people who don't like it? Sales figures for the game(over 5,700 AES carts) point to the fact that this game is fun and is enjoyed by many. My god it blows the socks off of 3D fighting games, and its better than Marvel vs. Capcom, my god what a geek fest that game is, with far worse control. SvC feels like an old school fighter, a pleasant offering in the wake of the same tired old King of Fighters series you get year after year.
SvC:Chaos has tight control, excellent graphics, and meh sound. You can't honestly say that SNKP didn't do a fantastic job with the Capcom character sprites...Guile and Dhalsim look badass, and both these characters are tough as hell if used right...I'm good with both...I'm pleased the game isn't blatantly balanced in favor of the SNK side. Anybody who uses the minor hit detection issues to disown this game, is just admitting the fact that their gaming skills aren't good enough to overcome it, and thats the truth...this game is fun and good. I'm sure KoF2003 will be sooo much betterl -_-

Played a good deal of Phantasy Star II. Did not enjoy getting through the first dungeon, getting everything there including both "sticks" of "dynamite" (bleh @ lame translations) and then getting killed in the lower level of the second dungeon by a Blaster...my WHOLE TEAM. Gah.
On the bonus side, I got a silv ribbon for Nei instead of a redundant Headgear my second time through :rocker:
Seemed to go much faster, too.
Currently, uh, let's see:
Just dropped the dual sonic guns on Rudolph in favor of a shotgun, Nei's got two Iron Bars (hah @ the name...anybody who's played System Shock 2 would've thought those were the crappiest things in the world, and the price is misleading) and my fellow's got a Ceramic Knife and a Ceramic Shield, plus headgear and a fibresuit.

Sales figures were high for two reasons:Lots of advertising and hype, and the JAMMA board, which considering not all arcades have a neo geo machine to spare, worked out well.
The game is blatantly balanced in favor of the secret characters, all of which except Dan can beat damn near the entire cast with less effort on their part. Zero and Geese are particularly bad in this respect with their simplistic infinites and anti-Guard cancel step moves.
And the GCFS! This was SNK taking what had the potential to be a good idea and make it complete ass. You play someone who does this well, and you get a match of them sitting there, waiting for you to attack them so they can do that and land a combo or super on you. It's like a parry but with absolutely NO risk. Alpha counters are dumb too-they give you guard break meter back, making it even more turtle friendly.
I won't say the hit detection issues are minor. I've had point blank throws whiff, rushing supers go THROUGH PEOPLE, anti-airs not work, etc. control is an issue too-try chun li's kikosho super, then try her kick super. Same motion, but one comes out ALOT easier. There's gaming skills overcoming BS, and then there's sloppy programming.
I'm not one of the cool people saying the game is bad-I was excited over this game, when the arcade got it here back in august I damn near skipped work to go up there, and let me tell you, the game is NOT old school, or very good. It's fine for a one player experience, but to people who want to play other people, it fails, badly. And that kills its replay value.
But what I hate most about SvC was how bad it was. Not just because it dissapointed me, but it was a HUGE black eye to SNK. They put alot of effort into marketing this game, and clearly not as much into making it. And that has hurt them...its made them more visible, but as a joke. And this has cut into Samurai Shodown V, a FAR superior game that saw little fanfare, and even less from people saying "SvC sucked, how can this be any good". I'm not expecting a miracle from KOF 2k3, but that could have a chance of getting the american market's eye with its new tag team system.
I hate Marvel 2, but trust me-that game at least has good controls, and all the stupid crap in it somehow balances out at high levels.

Sorry, that doesn't make any sense. The game was out in Arcades for about 6 months before the release of the homecart. This gave people plenty of time to make up their minds on whether the game is worth buying or not, and when SvC sells 5,500 HOMECARTS(@$335 a pop) in the first week of release, this doesn't tell me or SNK that the game is shit. I take it you didn't purchase the game right? You think it sucks, so you didn't buy it, don't you think others did the same thing as you?

This game is an offensive players dream, turtling players get ransacked. Some of the secret players are difficult to play against, sure, but nothing that a good fighting game player can't figure out counters for. My god, people were screaming the same shit during the SFII days 'OMG, theres no way to beat Ryu His Dragon Punch counters everything OMG' Seriously, all that stuff above just sounds like excuse making. The regular characters are powerhouses too, Dhalsim has the longest move list in the game, and he is just bad ass overall. How is Ken, Sagat, Mr. Karate, Iori and other regs not just equally as badass as the bosses? I just don't see it. I thought there were some control issues at first, but I soon got used to it, you know like a good game player...now I don't have any problems busting moves...sometimes I miss a super, but thats just because I don't do the move right, its not because "the game fucked up"...you see thats bullshit to blame the game, I always laugh when people blame the machine to try and convince themselves 'it wasn't my fault'.
Hit detection is a problem, the only problem in the game. I have serious problems hitting close in with Dhalsim sometimes, but its nothing I can't work around, and its not a game breaker. The computer will miss all the same, its not like its lopsided, and people are acting like the game is fucking them over...'It's the game man, it fucked me", thats ridiculous, is the game fucking the computer over too? I guess I'm a little more lenient than some, and I'm willing to learn. Some people just seem spoiled and unwilling to learn something new, and it gets really annoying to see every fighting game thats not MoTW or KOF slammed. Change is good, and I'm looking forward to SvC2. I mean come on, when has there not been a Fighting game that didn't have cheap strategies that seemed insurmountable? Every fighting game I've ever played has had characters that could do cheap stuff to win, and eventually you figure out how to beat them.

Did you listen to a single thing I said? Did you?
You said they sold X amount of copies. Not specifying, I assumed you meant the arcade version, which did indeed sell out fast. I don't know where you're getting your homecart numbers, but keep in mind, once again, the hype this game had, and the fact that not all areas have arcades with the game.
As for gameplay, its not an offensive players dream. Tell me how it is. I just told you why it isn't. Hell the japanese, notorious for being very offensive in their gameplay, do nothing but sit back and turtle in this game. Why? The same reasons I already said.
Secret characters can be overcome. I never said they couldn't. I said that they were better then the rest of the cast, which, except for Chun Li, is true. Sagat, what does he have? Low priority normals, a shitty tiger shot (his arms extend so far that he's easily hit), and a good tiger uppercut. That's all he's got. Why use Ken or Iori when you've got their secret character versions which are the same guys, but more damaging and faster? Tessa and Sim can play good keepaway, but Mars People and Goenitz do it better. Zero and Geese have simple infinites, Zero has monstrously good zoning outside of it, which most characters simply have a shitload of trouble overcoming. Geese has fast meter building, good counters, good normals, especially his hopkick, and the raging storm, probably one of the best supers in the game.
Ryu's dragon punch is easy to beat in SF2. Space yourself so that when you jump you don't leap into it. He couldn't knock you down with it if you were standing in that game, so it was a free throw. Now SF2 CE or HF...different story. How are you going to beat the raging storm? You can't walk in on him while he's recovering. You can't teleport past it. All you can do is get in close to keep him from doing it, and guess what? Then he can land his infinite, so you're boned that way, too!
There's good fighting games, and this isn't one of them. I hope SvC 2 is better, because quite frankly, this one was dog crap.

I'm not an IGN insider, but apparantly the news was there. Here's the thread that had the numbers. I even questioned it, because I thought it was insane that many Homecarts could still be sold, but I pretty much got flamed for it and told that even KOF games sell over 10,000 copies each year. So there you go, and if you're still going to say that Japanese players love offense(what is this anyway? like they are different gamers than us), and this game isn't for offense, but still sells a shitload of games in Japan...something doesn't match your theory.
I'm going to go torture myself with some SvC... :D :D ...owww..the pain...

The japanese fighting game mentality is alot more rushdown oriented. Not to say that they don't play defensively, but its not the predisposition you usually see. You can take CvS2, or Alpha 3, or SF2, or KOF, for examples. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of cart sales were from Korea, as the AES was a success there. And you can't discount collectors and casual players from buying the carts, either. To anyone who wants to get remotely competitive, though, this ain't your game.
As a general rule, I avoid neo-geo.com, its a haven for fanboys.
