View Full Version : Arcade games which never came home

Here's an old topic that should be revived here on the new boards...

Which arcade game would you have liked to see on a home version, but never saw the light of day? Mine would have to be Zoo Keeper, Colecovision. Hell, I'd bet the Atari 2600 could have had a decent version of the game as well. Probably faster gameplay with sacrificed graphics-a common occurrence between the two. So, what's yours?

I always wanted to see a Vectrex programmer put together a Tailgunner game. I loved the pseudo-3D look of the vector game and thought it would be doable on the Vectrex.

Zookeeper is another good one, as was Mad Planets.

I always wanted to see a home version of Tempest using the driving controller. That would've been fun!

Tailgunner was on the vectrex

Yes! Zookeeper! I still dream of a home version. Maybe an unreleased 2600 proto or even a homebrew could do it..

Others are

Moon Cresta. Yes I know it's on Nichibitsu arcade classics for psx. But that's too modern and anyway the gameplay is waay off!

Taito Space Invaders Part 2. Yes we have lots of 'Space Invaders' for home consoles, but rarely do they really match up to the arcade and all the little tricks you could do. Taito Space Invaders Part 2 (and it's lesser cousin Midway's Space Invaders Deluxe), is worse off and never did make it home in any satisfactory form. :/

My one is a bit newer, but I would love to have the Anniversary Star Wars game that Sega made a few years back. I swear, the amount of money I spent on that I probably could've bought one.

I also have a newer one, the X-Men arcade game. I have no idea as to why that nevere came home. I would also like a decent port of Captain America and the Avengers.

The original Aliens game by Konami (?).

Aliens vs. Predator by Capcom.

uhm...thats all of the top of my head at the moment.

Sorry to disagree with you Revolt, but Tailgunner was *never* released on the Vectrex. If it was, point me to a website saying it was or at least tell me the company that released it. I think you've got the game mixed up with something else there...

I know one of the Vectrex homebrew programmers (Tumbler or Dondzilla perhaps?) were working on a version years ago, but nothing ever surfaced.

Super Pac-Man, which, I know, has been found as a Prototype for the 5200, but I always loved this game back in the day and I think it's a shame it never was released to the general public (and considering how good the 5200 version is, it a damn shame that sucker never came out.)

I would have liked SnapJack to have gotten ported to the Colecovision, if some programer could just figure out how to get smooth scrolling on the coleco, it would of been a great port.

Guzzler, either for the 5200 or Colecovision. :scatter:

Do! Run Run, same consoles.

STUNN Runner is a game i wish could have made it to the 32x or at the very least the Jaguar.

EDIT: hmm, I got to doing a search for a prototype or something and found that S.T.U.N.N. Runner was released for the Lynx. I was not aware of this and for the first time I actually feel like searching for a Lynx now.

I'm a Zookeeper fan too, I've been holding on to the belief that there's a 2600 proto out there somewhere ever since it was announced in Atari Age (the magazine I mean - I think it was in the issue with Battlezone on the cover, the final issue) so many years ago.

Raedon: yep. Stun Runner for the Lynx. It surprised me too that day I walked into Software Etc. and saw it there amongst the Lynx boxes. Needless to say I picked it up and it was ok. I mean it isn't overwhelming or anything but it was pretty impressive that they'd try and port that to a handheld unit and more or less suceeded. Same goes for Ninja Gaiden.

Snap Jack.

Tempest!

Marvin's Maze.

Bagman.

Guzzler.

Star Fire.

Space Odyssey.

Pleiades.

Rally-X.

Spectar!

Killer Comet (I'd probably be the only one who buys it...).

As for smooth scrolling on a ColecoVision; it can be done. Nova Blast, B.C's Quest For Tires, Pitstop, Matt Patrol (3 levels!), and others.

Baawwww...! I want my Dragon Avatar back!

An arcade port of Zoo Keeper for Colecovision would have been great, even cooler if these was a NES port of it!

You mean the Final Fight clone with the Punisher and Nick Fury? Capcom brought it home to the Genesis, pretty decent conversion too.

It seems many of the games you guys are mentioning HAVE come out for home systems but for more recent systems...Tempest, for instance, is part of Tempest 2000 for Jaguar as well as the Atari arcade compilations. And Rally-X and Super Pac-Man are also available in various compilations. For me, I would've liked to see Lunar Lander and perhaps Crazy Climber for a next gen system (besides which the 2600 version is way too expensive as a "rare" item).

If I am not mistaken, Alien Vs. Predator came to SNES. If it's not the same game it is close if I am not mistaken.

There have been a number of crazy climbers out for the nes, snes and psx. For example PSX alone has Hyper Crazy Climber, Crazy Climber 2000, and the Crazy Climber found on Nichibitsu Arcade Classics disk.. there might even be more for all I know. :P

No lunar lander's that I know of though. :(

I would have loved to see the original star wars arcade game come to a home system. I am talking about the one with the green polygon graphics. where you basically destroy the death star over and over again. I still get shivers when I play the game and hear Han say, "your all clear kid!" Man I love that game.

You're talking about Starwars: the arcade game made by Atari, right? That game was ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and the Colecovision.

Rogmeister

I know of most of those versions of Crazy Climber but, except for the 2600, I think they were all foreign releases. I don't get imports and can't play them so I don't count them. Of course, there is a level on The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare where Bart (as Bartzilla) is doing the Crazy Climber bit...

eek!

The reason I COULDN'T remember it was because it was such a horrible conversion.

I'll still to playing it on Calluss till I can track down the arcade board.

I hear what you're saying but I still hate the fact that Atari had a version of Super Pac-Man ready to roll and canned it. The 9 year old in me resents the fact he had to wait until the PSX to play Super Pac-Man on his own TV. :)

I so hoped Black Tiger would have come home. There were pictures of a NES version in a Game Player's Buyer's Guide many moons ago. I've heard that it did come out (an online game store said they had it, but sold out), others say it didn't even come out. I believe the latter.

A couple I know that never came out on home systems:

Super Contra
Dark Adventure (Devil World in Japan)
Gates of Doom 1 and 2
Empire City 1931
G.I. Joe (Arcade game by Konami)
Sky Adventure
Guardians of the Hood
Aliens (konami)
China Gate
Numan Athletics
Ajax

I could think of more but I am at work at 2am and not remembering much at all...

I know there was a nes conversion of Super Contra called Super C but that was not nearly close to the arcade super contra... I hope Konami comes out with a collection of contra or their cool games they never released on some next gen system... I hope.

Uhm... I can think about a few "negligenced" classic arcade games that didn't get a nice port on any classic platform:

Bosconian
Rally-X
Elevator Action (just a 2600 proto)
Tempest (just protos)
Pleiades
Sinistar
Tron arcades

Interestingly, I had never seen Zookeeper before MAME, and it looks like a nice game indeed...

I'm guessing this isn't the long-suppressed Pac-Man clone for the Famicom.....

G.I. Joe (Arcade game by Konami)
It'd be difficult to do, since you have not only the toy license itself, but images ripped straight from G.I. Joe: The Movie (produced by Marvel Productions and Sunbow Productions) and the theme song from that godawful DIC run of Joe. Besides the whole thing with licensing stuff from three different companies, Hasbro has become adverse to anything that remotely resembles either cartoon series from the '80s and '90s, stepping back only to dwell on the comic between releases of the new junk.

Zoo Keeper most of all. Tempest would be great too.
