View Full Version : Oh X-Box, I love you so! You make classic gaming rock!!

I find I play classic system games on my X-Box more than I do X-Box games. You have not played NES games this clear unless you have a top load famicom with A/V ports.
Anyone else use their X-Box more for classic games then for new games?

how do you do this? Via emulation? If so, what program do you need and how do you do it?

Yeah I do it with emulation, there is a emulator port of just about every PC console emulator for the X-Box. It's really nice. Perfect clarity unlike with an NES RF unit.

No I meant you have never played an NES game on your TV as clear as you can on the X-Box because it utilizes A/V cables instead of a RF unit. Some of the famicoms had A/V hook-ups and you can find some US topload NES systems that are modded with A/V ports. NES on the X-Box is crystal clear!

Couple of questions....
Does your Xbox have to be modded?
Are the games saved on the HD or do they run off a CD?
GameGuru

Yeah you have to mod it, I have a no solder mod called Matrix. It was simple to install. And yes I put an 80GB hard drive in and run them all off the hard drive. Really nice.
The Goonies 2 has never been so crisp and clear! :)

I'm picking up an XBox after christmas, and a "no solder" mod sounds a lot less risky. But tell me....are you able to switch it off to keep yourself from getting banned from XBox live (like you can with some solder required mods)?
The only other thing at the moment that's holding me back is price.
$180.00 (XBox) + $50(minimum for modchip/kit) + $75(minimum for a new harddrive) = $305!! Um...ouch?

Another question.
How hard is it to install? The only time i've ever opened up a system was to install a new connector for my NES.
EDIT - Wait a sec... according to a review for the Matrix mod chip you...
What you need to install it:
-a v1 Xbox (build prior August 2002)
-a BIOS/Kernel
-a TORX 10
-a TORX 20
-a 9V battery
-milk (flashsofware for win32 and linux)
-the xodus installation guide : here
-good illumination in the room
-concentration ;)
So i'd have to buy an older Xbox? Crap.
Any easy way to tell if they're older? And are there any known problems with older Xboxes?
Thanks.

Why would it have to be older? Did Microsoft install a chip or something to ban use of a mod chip?

This is what I'm worried about. I'm always on Live and I don't want to risk getting my system banned by forgetting to turn off the mod chip (if it even has an on/off switch...I've got my eye on the non-solder version). Maybe I'll have to pick up another system just for emulator use. Another thing is knowing how to burn the emulators & roms on disc, which if anything like how it's done for the Dreamcast, is way beyond my grasp. It'd be nice if I could just buy them already burned from someone <wink, wink> ;)
WiseSalesman
11-30-2003, 01:15 AM
Well, I burned a DCNES disc with no trouble, and, as far as the Xbox goes, I was thinking that once I got the new operating system installed, I wouldn't so much be burning discs to it as I'd be transferring files to it via my network. Hmm....where;'s Omnedon when you need him? If I remember correctly, he knows all about all this crap.

If emulating nes on an xbox uses A/V ports, how is that going to be more clear than using the A/V ports on a toaster nes? I can understand the xbox equalling the picture quality of toaster nes, but how is it going to surpass it?

The Xbox can be hooked-up via component or S-video which both blow A/V out of the water. Who uses A/V anyways?? I avoid it when possible.

TurboGrafx-16
Genesis
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
GameBoy
Gameboy Color

I love it! Sure playing them on my PC and laptop is great but sitting in my recliner and playing them on a 32" TV is awesome!

You are correct on the 'latter' part. The tg16 emu on xbox is a ported HUGO. And we all know Hugo isn't the best TG16/PCE emu to begin with. But oh well.. it's something :)

I find Hugo works decent, not as good as Magic Engine but it is free and Magic Engine isn't on the X-Box yet.
GaijinPunch

Magic Box will most likely never be on the X-box either, as it's not only closed-source, but it's a commercial application.
Hugo emulation goes downhill on SCDs. Mainly sound problems, but it's enough to irk people that are diehard turbo players. It's still pretty good, but nothing like MegaCD emulation, which is fantastic. There's also a nice app that will rip your SCDs/MEgaCDs to MP3's, then upload them to the HD, and play away. Don't have to dig your CDs out all the time!
As for the install. I had never soldered anything in my life. I spent $12 on a "how to solder for retarded monkeys" kit off the internet, practiced with that, read posts on xbox-scene.com and soldered my first chip no problem. A soldered chip is way better than a non-solder. The non-solder chips CAN come loose, meaning you'll have to open up your box again (no pun intended).
And yes, I play WAAAY more classic games on my Xbox than Xbox games.

Herzog Zwei + Xbox = gaming heaven!
NE146
11-30-2003, 08:02 PM
Yeah Hugo Xbox is irksome. On Military Madness, the game crashes on any map larger than one screen (try moving around). On Legendary Axe II, the lightning pretty much looks like crap and bugs out. Other games, the little sound inconstencies are enough to bother me to the point I don't want to play them. Blazing Lazers voice is almost indistinct, and the sounds are just balanced wrong. On Ninja Spirit, the dog's howl in the beginning sounds like a fart. Stuff like that O_O :(
But oh well, like I said, it's about the best you're gonna find right now. So I'll take it :)

As much as I feel this is the wrong place for this, I'll toss in my two cents. I have all of the aformentioned goods, But I wouldn't recommend going with a solderless chip(exec2.3 or XBit) But I think soldering is the answer to everything. And I would also recommend the largest HD that is allowed, I know this was 120 at one point but I thought it went up to 160. And last of all, great reply by Kai123. Good N64 news as it is coming along slowly but coming along nonetheless.

I'll probably just end up with a 40gig in mine if I do go with an xbox. By the time I buy the system and parts required to mod it, I won't have the money for a new HDD. I have a 40gig lying around though.

12-15-2003, 05:01 AM
Well, considering I have no interest in copying games, and, form what I hear, I can stream movies from my PC, really the XBox HDD will be just for older system emulation, mp3s, and xbox gamesaves. I don't think I even have 10gigs of emulation stuff at the moment, so as long as I go easy on the mp3s, I'm hoping it'll hold me for awhile.

Yesterday, I tried to mod my xbox with the non-solder Chameleon chip. But, for some reason, the DO is not making contact since I still end up with the Microsoft start up screen. I am just going to solder a new wire on to the solderless adaptor and that should do the trick...I hope...

Why in the world would anyone do all that for emulation.
Damn, hook a Xbox controller to your PC with a USB adapter and a TV out video card.
You'll have a much faster processor, video card , hard drive. Almost perfect emulation for every system thats been mentioned . And an easily upgradeable machine with 1/10 the hassle.

But then how do you take it to different tv's around the house? Or how do you take it to granny's to play over Christmas? You get what I'm saying. :) Course you could also outfit a pc to be a 'white box' portable emulation machine (and a lot of people do exactly that) but heck, an Xbox is less than 200 bucks. Anyway, naturally the majority of xbox emulation users play emu's on their pc's as well. It's all good :D
