Located less than five minutes off of I-40 in Oklahoma City, Cactus Jack's arcade is both a dinosaur and a legend around these parts. Cactus Jack's is one of the few remaining arcades in this area that isn't located in a mall. Although it's been open for as long as I can remember, its image has certainly changed over the years. When I was young, Cactus Jack's had a reputation for being a somewhat rough place. Clouds of smoke hung over the pool tables, and there were usually as many kids hanging out on the sidewalk outside the arcade as there were inside. Times change, and Cactus Jack's has too, into a much more family friendly hang-out locale.

The building itself is quite long and somewhat narrow. The entrance leads directly into the kiddie games area. On your right is the ticket redemption counter. In this general area there are several basketball toss games, skee-ball games, and probably fifteen of those "ticket gambling" games. To your left are the pinball tables (arranged in a circle), followed by two air hockey tables, several picnic tables (for birthday parties), video games, and finally the pool tables.

You younger readers may not remember what arcades were like in the 80's. Despite all the neon and glitz you've seen on television and in movies, most arcades in the 80's were dark and kind of scary to be alone in (at least that's how I remember them!). Cactus Jack's remains true to that era by keeping the inside nice and dark. What few outside windows there are have been tinted so heaily that they're difficult to see out of and impossible to see in through. Most of the interior light comes from the video games' screens themselves. The only area I would describe as "well-lit" would be the children's game area.

All of the games in Cactus Jack's work off of tokens, and token machines are located practically everywhere. Pool games are now seventy-five cents, air hockey is fifty-cents, and the video games themselves vary depending on age (classics are still a quarter). Cactus Jack's still gets crowded when they host pool tournaments and DDR contests, but if you drop by on a Sunday morning (like I did) you're liable to be the only person there.

This turned out to be much less popular than I had hoped.
